PCG: China maritime militia ships decreased in WPS amid bad weather
'Dahil sa sobrang pangit na panahon sa WPS, even the Chinese maritime militia that are swarming in those areas have significantly decreased,' PCG spokesperson for WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela said at a Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum.

Asked about the previous and current number of Chinese maritime militia vessels in the area, Tarriel said he does not have the numbers at the moment.
On Tuesday, the Philippine Navy said the number of Chinese vessels monitored over some features in the WPS has increased in June.
Philippine Navy spokesperson for WPS Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said a total of 49 China Coast Guard (CCG) and People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels were seen in the area.
Trinidad said nine CCG vessels and 14 PLAN vessels were seen in Bajo de Masinloc; 12 CCG vessels and two PLAN vessels in Ayungin Shoal; and nine CCG vessels and three PLAN Navy vessels in Pagasa Island.
'These 49 ships were not there all the time but they were in and out of the different features,' Trinidad said.
According to him, the June record was the highest reported number of Chinese vessels in the WPS compared to the 11 in January, nine in February, 35 in March, 31 in April, and 41 in May.
Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
Parts of the South China Sea that fall within Philippine territory have been renamed by the government as West Philippine Sea to reinforce the country's claim.
The West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime areas on the western side of the Philippine archipelago including Luzon Sea and the waters around, within and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo de Masinloc.
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis."

PCG saves 6 during rescue ops in Occidental Mindoro
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), on Friday, reported two successful rescue operations in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro. In a statement, PCG said they were able to rescue two fishermen stranded at the Tayamaan River in Barangay Tayamaan on Wednesday night after their boat ran aground. Despite strong currents, the PCG used an unmanned rubber boat attached to a rope to save the two victims, who still chose to jump in the water and swim ashore. The victims eventually reached the shore at Barangay 9, Mamburao around 2 a.m. and were immediately assessed and brought to the Occidental Mindoro Provincial Hospital for further checking. In a separate statement, PCG shared that they were also able to rescue four passengers from a stranded fishing banca at the Tayamaan Bridge in Tayamaan at around 7 p.m. on Thursday. The PCG stated that the victims were stranded in their boat and were unable to leave due to the rising flood and strong currents due to the heavy rains. The victims were rescued through join efforts of the PCG, Provincial and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the Mamburao Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). Earlier, PAGASA reported that Emong had weakened into a tropical storm as of 2 p.m. Despite this, Signal No. 2 remains up in five areas in Luzon. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

PCG monitoring six ports amid Habagat
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Tuesday that it is monitoring six ports amid the persisting bad weather condition due to the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and Tropical Depression Dante. 'As of the moment, mayroon tayong naitala na six ports na binabantayan po natin. Ito po yung Port of Lazi sa Siquijor; San Andres sa may southern Quezon; San Jose Port sa Occidental Mindoro; Balanacan Port sa may Mogpog; and Cavite Gateway sa may Tanza,' said PCG Spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab in state television PTV's special coverage on the effects of Habagat. From 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesday, the PCG data showed that there are currently 21 stranded passengers and one vessel stranded in Cavite Gateway Terminal. Meanwhile, six vessels and 47 motorbancas are taking shelter in the said port. In the Port of Lazi, there are two vessels and four motorbancas taking shelter for the meantime. The PCG reminded the public to avoid sailing given the inclement weather. If needed, the agency advised everyone to bring life jackets with them. 'Kung hindi pa rin maganda ang panahon sa inyong mga lugar ay iwasan na po natin na maglayag. Kung maari ay i-check muna natin ang mga paalala o impormasyon galing sa PAGASA. BRP Sierra Madre crew in Ayungin Shoal safe amid bad weather — PH Navy
The crew of BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal are secured and safe despite the impact of the bad weather, according to the Philippine Navy on Tuesday. Philippine Navy spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said rough seas and above normal wind conditions were reported in WPS (West Philippine Sea) features. 'In our latest communication with our troops, including our nine features, they are fine. The sea has been rough, the winds have been above normal but the overall condition of the troops to include those on BRP Sierra Madre, they are safe and they are secured,' he said. According to him, there are enough supplies for the crew of BRP Sierra Madre. 'The last rotary for BRP Sierra Madre was 20th of June. The supplies are designed to last more than the next rotary that is scheduled. This will also cover the other eight features,' Trinidad said. 'The military always has more than enough supplies for the projected rotation or next rotation missions,' he added. Trinidad said there is no data available yet on the updated number of Chinese vessels in the area. But he said 'historically because of weather disturbances, these numbers drastically drop.' The World War II-era BRP Sierra Madre has been grounded in Ayungin Shoal since 1999. The ship has become a symbol of Philippine sovereignty in the offshore territory. Ayungin Shoal is a submerged reef in the Spratly Islands. It is located 105 nautical miles west of Palawan and is within the Philippines 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
