Ceasefire in southern Syria appears to be holding as US demands Damascus end violence

CNN — The Syrian government says
The Syrian government says clashes in the southern city of Suwayda have stopped after a week of violence left hundreds of people dead, drawing Israeli intervention and US condemnation.
A ceasefire agreement reached by the government, Druze groups and Bedouin tribes on Saturday appeared to be holding Sunday, but communications with the province remain difficult.
There were no reports of gunfire in the city of Suwayda Sunday.
'After intensive efforts by the Ministry of Interior to implement the ceasefire agreement and the deployment of its forces in the northern and western regions of Suwayda Governorate, the city of Suwayda was evacuated of all tribal fighters, and clashes within the city's neighborhoods were halted,' Interior Ministry spokesperson Noureddine Al-Baba said, according to the Syrian state news agency.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Saturday called on the Syrian government to use its security forces to prevent 'violent jihadists' from entering Suwayda and 'carrying out massacres.'
In a post on X, Rubio said: 'The US has remained heavily involved over the last three days with Israel, Jordan and authorities in Damascus on the horrifying & dangerous developments in southern Syria. The rape and slaughter of innocent people which has and is still occurring must end.'
Bedouin tribal fighters were involved in clashes with Druze groups on the western edges of the city on Saturday. One of the Druze factions – Spiritual Leadership – said it was 'deeply regrettable and shameful that the other party has failed to uphold the ceasefire,' and appealed to the international community to halt what it called 'this terrorist onslaught.'

Trump Orders Nuclear Submarine Redeployment in Response to ‘Provocative' Russian Remarks

Taarek Refaat U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the repositioning of two nuclear submarines to 'strategic locations' in response to what he called 'highly provocative' statements made by Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, 'Based on the extremely provocative statements made by former Russian President Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council, I have ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to appropriate areas in case those reckless and dangerous words are more than just talk.' He added, 'Words matter greatly and often lead to unintended consequences… I hope this is not the case.' It remains unclear whether Trump was referring to nuclear-armed submarines or vessels powered by nuclear reactors. Medvedev's comments came a day earlier, when he referenced Russia's Cold War–era nuclear retaliatory capabilities in a pointed warning, following Trump's recent admonition to 'watch his words.' read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Trump Fires BLS Commissioner after Disappointing Jobs Report

Taarek Refaat U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erica MacEntarfer just hours after the release of a report showing a sharp slowdown in job growth during July. In a heated post on his Truth Social platform, Trump launched fresh criticism at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and accused MacEntarfer, appointed under President Joe Biden, of manipulating employment data for political purposes. 'I was informed that our country's job numbers are being produced by a Biden political appointee, Erica MacEntarfer, who rigged the figures before the election to boost Kamala Harris's chances,' Trump wrote. 'We need accurate job numbers, and I have directed my team to fire this political appointee immediately. She will be replaced by someone with greater competence and experience.' NBC News confirmed that MacEntarfer has already been removed from her post. The BLS operates under the U.S. Department of Labor, currently headed by Trump appointee Lori Chavez-DeRemer. The abrupt decision came on the same day the BLS reported that the U.S. economy added just 73,000 nonfarm jobs in July, far below expectations. The agency also sharply revised down employment figures for the previous two months, eliminating a combined 258,000 jobs from earlier estimates. This brought the three-month average job growth to just 35,000, the weakest pace since April 2020. Trump and congressional Republicans have repeatedly criticized the BLS for what they describe as 'large and politically suspicious' revisions to employment data. In his current budget proposal, Trump called for an 8% reduction in the bureau's workforce, a move that raised concerns about the accuracy of its statistics on jobs, prices, and other key economic indicators. The BLS has increasingly relied on estimated data to fill gaps in employment and inflation reports, amid mounting political pressure from the Trump administration. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

The voting for Egyptians abroad is scheduled to take place over two days, August 1 and 2, 2025, across Egyptian embassies and consulates worldwide. Following his vote, Abdel Ati emphasized that participation in constitutional entitlements is a 'national duty,' underscoring the government's strong commitment to encouraging Egyptians abroad to take part in the democratic process. 'Egyptians living overseas are an integral part of the national fabric and key partners in shaping the country's future,' he stated.
