PROGRESS 2025: Work on Bluefield's over $25 million transportation project starting soon

bluefield — City officials are moving forward on a $25 million plan for making Bluefield's streets easier for pedestrians, bicycle riders and drivers to navigate.
On Sept. 4, 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the city of Bluefield had been awarded a $25,748,152 grant to make transportation easier for pedestrians, bicycle riders, wheelchair users and others relying on local roads and sidewalks. The grant was among $1 billion in grants awarded through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.
The project's goal is to convert four of Bluefield's key intersections to roundabouts, create pedestrian and bicycle accommodations through a strategic mountain gap, and make safety improvements that include implementing traffic-calming strategies and installing sidewalks, crosswalks, rectangular rapid-flashing beacons, and street lighting on selected corridors. The Making Residents, Students, and Visitors Safer in the Education and Recreation District program is designed to make safety improvements to a key gateway into historic Black communities and the entrance to Bluefield State University.
Locations for Safe Street projects range from College Avenue, Stadium Drive, Cumberland Road, Princeton Avenue and other roads in the city along with the intersection connecting Cherry Street, Maryland Avenue and Stadium Drive.
Steps in taking the Safe Street project forward are underway, said City Manager Cecil Marson. One step is necessary because the state has a new administration under Gov. Patrick Morrisey and a new Secretary of Transportation, Stephen Todd Rumbaugh, who is also commissioner of the West Virginias Department of Highways.
Bluefield city officials recently met with Rumbaugh while work continues on the memorandum of understanding between the city and the state Department of Highways, he said. Selecting an engineer to oversee the project will be the next step.
'So everything's online and we're moving like crazy to get it started,' Marson said.
The extensive project could take three to four years to complete.
'It's all (Route) 52, all of Stadium Drive, all of College Avenue,' Marson said. 'It's a big undertaking, but we're excited to get it rolling.'
Marson said the project aims to improve transportation across the city.
'It's all safety and mobility in the city, so it's going to be things like bike lanes, it's going to be redoing the sidewalks,' he said. 'It will also entail some of the infrastructure underneath to make sure the storm lines and the sewer lines and all that are where they need to be and, of course, it will be street lighting and some landscaping and crosswalks. It's really to give folks good mobility and a facelift for the city and an improvement to the infrastructure.'
In October 2024, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., a leader on the Senate Appropriations Committee, visited Bluefield and spoke with local leaders about the project.
Capito visited the Bluefield Economic Development Office during that earlier meeting to hear about the city's plans for the grant. Marson told the senator how the city started working two years ago to obtain the Safe Street for All grant. Thanks to this grant, three of the city's major arteries are 'going to get fixed,' he said.
One roadway, Cherry Street, goes from Bluefield State University to its dorm and classroom facility at the former Bluefield Regional Medical Center. There are times when students use this street, which Marson described as dangerous and treacherous, as a walkway to and from the two campuses.
'That whole road is going to get widened with sidewalks, bike lanes and lighting, Americans with Disabilities Act access, so that's going to completely free up all those kids to move back and forth. When that was a hospital that wasn't necessary, but now that's completely changed,' Marson said in the earlier meeting.
Capito was also told about plans for the Midway Overpass Grant that the city received just before Christmas in 2023. The $13,480,000 award for the city came through the Rural Surface Transportation Grant Program.
Capito later said that she appreciated the briefing, but added, 'you've to to pat yourselves on the back, too.'
'A lot of these are competitive grants and if you're not writing and showing the need and fleshing out the projects as good as you do, you're not going to get the money,' Capito said.
The city had done the work necessary for a major grant application. There are times when applicants have big plans, but they do not have backup plans such as pre-engineering studies, traffic studies, population studies or economic studies, so they cannot justify a grant, Capito said.
'As I was worked to craft the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, I saw a generational opportunity to improve West Virginia's surface transportation infrastructure. U.S. Route 52 is a crucial thoroughfare for Bluefield and these improvements will increase road safety and continue expanding economic opportunities in and around the city. I was proud to advocate for this project and I'm thrilled to see work underway,' Capito said then.

A South Carolina beach town once nicknamed 'Dirty Myrtle' because of its rowdy nightclubs and strip joints has become a magnet for retirees in a nation that continues to age. The number of residents age 65 years and older in the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area grew by 6.3% last year, making it the fastest-growing metro area for senior citizens in the U.S., according to population estimates the U.S. Census Bureau released last week. During the 2020s, Myrtle Beach's senior population has grown by more than 22%, also the fastest rate in the United States this decade. Senior citizens now make up more than a quarter of the around 413,000 residents in metro Myrtle Beach, which once was known for being a budget beach destination. The community with a mile-long boardwalk and 200-foot Ferris wheel used to attract biker rallies which the city tried to end in the late 2000s because of the noise, traffic and rowdiness. But now the noisy streets have had to make room for quiet diners and pickleball courts. The COVID-19 pandemic played a role in the area's senior boom as people in such places as Ohio and New York who had been vacationing for years in Myrtle Beach realized they could retire early or work from home anywhere, said Mark Kruea, a longtime public information officer for Myrtle Beach who is now running to be mayor. 'Many people converted that thought into action,' Kruea said. 'The climate's great, taxes are low, there's a wealth of opportunities for recreation, dining and shopping.' A graying United States The U.S. population age 65 and older rose by 3.1% last year, while the population under age 18 decreased by 0.2%. In the past two decades, seniors have increased from 12.4% to 18% of the U.S. population, while the share of children has dropped from 25% to 21.5%, according to the population estimates. Maine, Vermont, and Florida were the only three states where older adults outnumbered children as recently as 2020. But four years later, those states were joined by Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia. Maine last year had the oldest median age at 44.8, while Utah's was the youngest at 32.4. Groups that saw the most growth The share of the U.S. population that is Hispanic reached 20% last year for the first time, helped by an annual gain of 1.9 million Hispanics mostly through migration. In pure numbers, the Hispanic population grew the most last year in the New York, Houston and Miami metro areas. When it comes to growth rates, the biggest gains were in smaller metros such as Ocala, Florida; Panama City, Florida; and St. Joseph, Missouri. For Black residents whose growth last year was split between migration and natural increase, the biggest gains were in the Houston, New York and Dallas-Fort Worth metro areas in pure numbers. Bozeman, Montana, and Provo, Utah — metro areas with tiny Black populations to start with — were tops in growth rates. In pure numbers, the New York, Dallas-Fort Worth and Seattle metro areas had the biggest Asian population gains, and the growth came primarily from migration. The largest growth rates were in three metro areas with small Asian populations: Farmington, New Mexico; Bismarck, North Dakota; and Burlington, North Carolina. The non-Hispanic white population in the United States declined slightly last year, but it grew the most in the Nashville, Tennessee; New York and Charlotte, North Carolina metro areas in pure numbers. The biggest growth rates for the white population were in the Myrtle Beach; Daphne-Fairhope, Alabama; and Wilmington, North Carolina metro areas. Logan Airport in Boston has raised its fees for taking an Uber or Lyft to catch a flight, as well as the cost of parking in a garage. The new prices went into effect Tuesday. It will now cost an extra $5.50 each way for Uber and Lyft passengers, up from the previous fee of $3.25. Earlier this year, Massport proposed hiking the fee to $7.50 before a compromise was reached. As part of the deal, passengers can now be dropped off right in front of the terminal doors, instead of at a designated spot in the garage. The deal also gives Uber and Lyft drivers more time to accept pickup requests after making an airport drop-off, calls for more shared ride opportunities and requires the companies to launch a shuttle service to Logan. Massport CEO Rich Davey said at the time that the compromise would allow for "new, cheaper ways to get to Boston Logan," while also addressing traffic issues. Logan Airport parking prices Garage parking is also more expensive at Logan now. The maximum price to park at the airport's main garage is now $46 daily, up from 41 a day. Parking in the economy garage is now $37 a day, up from $32. Getting to Logan Airport Travelers can take the MBTA's Blue Line to the airport, or take the free Silver Line from South Station. The Logan Express bus is available from Braintree, Danvers, Framingham and Woburn for $9 each way, with parking for $7 a day. There's also a Logan Express from Back Bay for $3 to the airport, with a free ride back.

KLIA Aerotrain returns July 1: Anwar to officiate relaunch, Loke applauds revival

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The KLIA Aerotrain will resume full operations tomorrow at 10am after nearly 28 months of suspension. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the launch at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1). Bernama reported that the upgraded automated people mover system is part of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) airport transformation agenda. 'A big thanks to everyone who worked day and night to bring the Aerotrain back,' Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in a Facebook post today after he signed off on the document. The Aerotrain, an icon of KLIA since 1998, underwent a RM456 million overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB's RM742 million Airport Regeneration Plan. The modernised system now uses Alstom Innovia APM 300R three-car driverless trainsets that can carry up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56 kilometres per hour. The journey between the main terminal and the satellite building now takes under three minutes. Each train is equipped with advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce disruptions, improve operational efficiency and enhance passenger safety and comfort. The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) conducted six months of testing and commissioning for the new system between January and June 2025. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said extensive technical and safety tests were implemented to ensure fault-free operations. The project, initially targeted for completion in March 2025, faced delays due to global supply chain issues, system integration challenges and the complexity of installing a new driverless system while maintaining airport operations. KLIA T1 handles over 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the Aerotrain playing a key role in ensuring smooth transfers for international passengers. The satellite terminal hosts many long-haul carriers, making fast terminal connections essential to reduce missed connections and support seamless travel. With the Aerotrain back in service, KLIA is positioned to handle growing passenger volumes ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 and the airport's projected return to pre-pandemic traffic levels.
