The 2026 L.A. Marathon date is changing to avoid a clash with the Oscars schedule
Mayor Karen Bass announced on Thursday that the marathon will be rescheduled to avoid a Hollywood-style pileup. The conflict sparked logistical headaches as both events depend on access to central arteries like Hollywood Boulevard, which is not exactly built to handle both a 26.2-mile race and a red-carpet rollout in the same breath.
The Academy had announced that the 98th Oscars—set to be hosted again by Conan O'Brien—would take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre, a key spot along the 2025 marathon route. Turns out, marathon organizers were blindsided by the news.
'We were surprised by the Academy's announcement, as there was no prior communication with us,' an L.A. marathon spokesperson wrote in a statement to NBC4, on April 2, noting that the event's traditional date—the third Sunday in March—had been publicly announced well in advance.
In stepped Mayor Bass, who brokered a compromise between Murphy Reinschreiber of the McCourt Foundation (which owns the marathon) and Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The result? The Oscars will remain on March 15, while the marathon will shift to another March date, which is still to be confirmed.
The deal also secures the marathon's future: going forward, it will always land on the third Sunday in March. The Academy and marathon organizers also agreed to a new partnership aimed at cross-promoting the events for the good of the L.A. community.
So don't lace up just yet—at least not until the final date drops.

Didi previously spoke exclusively to The Sun about her experience of shooting the film and shared some behind the scenes insights. In one memorable scene of the movie, there's a dance contest where the cast go wild, dancing the Hand Jive and doing some rather dirty dancing. While it looked like it would have been fun to film, Didi revealed it was anything but fun. She expressed: 'That actually took a whole week of shooting. And what was really tough about it was that it was the height of summer - my birthday was that week, and the cake they got for me totally melted. 'We were in a real high school in downtown Los Angeles, with no air conditioning, and we had to keep the windows closed because right next door was a pork plant, so you can imagine the smell!' But it was Summer Nights, the opening number of Grease, that Didi remembered most fondly. She explained: 'I think that's where we all bonded, and it was so much fun to sing that song and jump all around the table. 'We'd been rehearsing it for weeks beforehand, so the energy was so high when we performed it for real.' Michael Douglas has refuted claims made by Sharon Stone that they had a blazing row prior to working together on their 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct. Sharon claimed during a lengthy profile with Business Insider that she and Michael fought over a friend of hers in Cannes, and the argument allegedly led to the actor refusing to do a screen test with her for Basic Instinct. The actress, 67, alleged Michael 'screamed' at her over the disagreement, though they smoothed things over and are now friends. But Michael, 80, doesn't remember things the same way, with a rep for the star claiming he doesn't recall 'any argument in that timeframe.' The blockbuster follows the police officer, who points suspicion towards Catherine Tramell (Sharon), the victim's girlfriend. Catherine manages to seduce Nick into falling in love with her. Basic Instinct features a well-known scene where Catherine is being quizzed by police. Amid the bombardment of questions, she distracts them when she uncrosses then recrosses her legs, leaving the men flustered seeing as she was underwear-free at the time. Last year Sharon said that the iconic and controversial interrogation scene now seems 'very ordinary' compared to raunchy present-day films. Appearing at the Taormina Film Festival, Sharon said - per Deadline -that while the scene was considered X-rated at the time, nowadays it would have lost its shock factor. She said:'[at the time] it seemed like a scandal, and now it seems very, very ordinary. 'I think that now that women are writing, directing, producing, filming and more and more a part of filmmaking, films are less about men writing films about their fantasies of the way women are 'And actresses are less asked to portray the male fantasy, and then critics are less asked to tell us if we fulfilled the male fantasy or not.
