Canvey Island funfair to expand into derelict neighbour
The announcement follows the recent update on the government's promise to build Europe's first Universal theme park in the UK.The Universal attraction is planned for the site of a former brickworks near Bedford and could create an estimated 28,000 jobs before opening in 2031.
At its height, Leisure Island Fun Park had more than 20 rides and attractions on the Eastern Esplanade.Fire broke out at the site in September, causing damage to its toilet block, first aid room, baby changing area and compactor area.
In a statement on Facebook in February, Leisure Island thanked everyone who had supported the business and the "nearly 3,000 members of staff" who had worked at the park over the years."It's so sad we have had to close the park but hopefully we have created loads of memories for the families that visited us," the statement said.Director Mr Gray, of Fantasy Island, owned by Monico Leisure, insisted Canvey seafront was still "moving forward" when speaking to the BBC in February.
He added: "We are getting more and more support of people coming down here and enjoying live facilities."According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the local council has offered them a two-year lease, with a reasonable rate to help them get started. Mr Palmer said: "They are great people and did have some big plans but didn't have the room at their existing site."Now with this new additional plot it will be a chance for them to do some wonderful things. "It will be interesting to see what they do there."

Military museum plans street party to mark VJ day anniversary
A military museum hunting for a new home has unveiled plans to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a street party. West Lothian's military museum has seen an upsurge in visitors and wider support in the month since it was revealed that it will have to relocate from its current home in the grounds of the war-blind veterans' estate at Linburn, Wilkieston. And museum owner Ian Inglis revealed they hoped to attract more crowds. He said: 'We will be open as normal on the 15 of August, from 10am to 4pm. We will have a special exhibition on the far east campaign including a diorama of Bridge over the River Kwai, made by our resident modeller. Normal entry fees apply to the museum. 'We will also be having a street party between 11am to 4pm, and anyone is welcome to come along, there is no charge for that.' He added that tea/coffee/ juice will be supplied but people should bring along food. There is no charge, but all donations are welcome. Ian also revealed there would be a talk by best-selling author Mary Monro, who's book Stranger in My Heart tells the remarkable story of her father's escape from the Japanese occupiers of Hong Kong. Ms Monro will be at the museum on the day signing copies of the book. Ian told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: 'Mary Monro wrote about her dad's exploits in WWII. He was captured by the Japanese in Hong Kong and sent to a POW camp. 'He did manage to escape from the camp. It's a fantastic book; there will be a few copies there to purchase that will be signed by the author.' Founded by Ian, who served in the Royal Artillery, largely around his own collection of militaria the museum has become an award-winning attraction. The museum has also become a community hub for local veterans and hosts weekly breakfasts and other events to keep ex-servicemen and women connected. The museum is also staffed by ex-service volunteers. 'We're not just a museum we're more than that, we' re unique education resource. We we have the veterans' hub as well. It would be ideal if we could stay locally, we don't want to move to far away, we'd like to stay within easy access to the bridges.' Such has been the success of the museum the search has been on for a while for a new home in the area. That hunt has gathered new urgency since the charity which owns Linburn – Sight Scotland Veterans – announced their intention to sell the estate for housing development. The museum features indoors and outdoors exhibits of equipment, uniforms, vehicles, and even a First World War trench display. Somewhere nearby for a new home would be ideal as a new home, as Ian pointed out. The museum's growth in popularity draws visitors from across the UK and the world. Earlier this month an American family, rolled up from Edinburgh airport taking time out before checking into their hotel. 'We get a lot of that, and people going to the airport,' he said. 'They have a few hours to kill before their flight, so they pop in here.' By Stuart Sommerville, Local Democracy Reporter Like this: Like Related

A HUGE music festival faces being forced to move after 20 years. This comes as plans for a mega new town next to one of the UK's airports has been unveiled. 6 6 6 Download Festival is a high-profile metal and rock festival that is held each June. Created by Andy Copping, it was seen as a successor to the legendary Monsters of Rock extravaganza, held at Castle Donington from 1980 until 1996. Since 2003, the summer open-air extravaganza has taken place at Donington Park in Leicestershire. Some of the biggest acts in the industry have taken to the stage at the annual event. However, plans for a new town in the East Midlands and right near the site have been unveiled and submitted. 4,250 homes in the long-mooted town called Isley Woodhouse could be built just south-west of East Midlands airport. Plans for one secondary and two primary schools have also been included along with shops, hotels, sports facilities and a leisure centre to be built on farmland. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the developers Harworth Group and Caesarea Development Holdings have said that 10,000 new residents could be brought to the area. The plans - submitted to North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) have identified land between Isley Walton, Diseworth and Tonge. The little-known UK airport that you'll wish you were flying from this summer Concerned rock fans took to social media as they questioned whether the festival will still take place on the site, given the news. Writing on fan forum site Reddit, a Download Festival fan account created a new thread as the user wrote: "Just seen there's been plans submitted for 10,000 new houses next to Donington Park, will Download have to move?" The account also wrote: "Saw this on BBC today. Could this be the death blow for Download at Donington? "I know some people have said the site as it stands is insufficient, but it would be a shame to move from our spiritual home." Meanwhile on Facebook in a Download Festival [2026] group, another user wrote: "Just been told 2026 could possibly be the last at Donington Park due to this." The worried words were accompanied by an emotional red angry face emoji. The Sun has approached representatives for Download Festival for comment. 6 6 6
