Muhamad Norazlan appointed as new RMAF chief in Subang ceremony
SUBANG: General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris has officially taken over as the 21st Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in a ceremony held at the Subang Air Base today. He succeeds General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan, who retired after more than four decades of service.
The handover ceremony was witnessed by Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) Chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaafar. The event also included a promotion ceremony for Muhamad Norazlan, who was elevated from Lieutenant General to General, and a farewell parade for the outgoing chief.
Muhamad Norazlan, 58, began his military career as a Cadet Officer at the Royal Military College (RMC) in Sungai Besi from 1985 to 1987. He later trained as a pilot in Alor Setar in 1988 and has since flown multiple fighter jets, including the Aermacchi MB339A, A4PTM Skyhawk, and Sukhoi 30MKM.
Before his appointment as RMAF chief, he held key roles such as Commander of Gong Kedak Air Base and Deputy RMAF Chief since June 2022. Meanwhile, Mohd Asghar Khan, who joined the RMAF in 1983, served as a fighter pilot and commanded various aircraft before his tenure as chief from March 2022.

Chinese veterans group urges more community members to join armed forces
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Chinese Association for Veterans Affairs (MACVA) has urged more Chinese Malaysians to join the Malaysian Armed Forces. MACVA president Lieutenant Colonel (R) Wong Ah Jit said previous generations of the Chinese community had also served and defended the country. "A military career is not an easy path, but it builds character, instils discipline, develops leadership and, most importantly, provides an opportunity for young people to be directly involved in nation-building and shoulder the responsibility of protecting the people. "The current generation should continue this tradition and ensure the Chinese community continues to have a voice, presence and contribution in the armed forces," he said in a statement today. Wong said MACVA called on Chinese families and community organisations nationwide to support their young people in exploring military service, and encourage them to don the uniform proudly and build meaningful careers in national defence. "This is our country, our land, and national defence should not be without the presence and contribution of the Chinese community. "Joining the military does not mean giving up on dreams. It means choosing a different path with greater challenges," he said.

RMAF chief 'Gunjiz' takes final bow with thunderous air force send-off
SHAH ALAM: Fighter jets roared above the Subang Air Base today as the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) bid a soaring farewell to its 20th chief, General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan. Eighteen aircraft took part in the ceremony, held to honour Asghar's service, dedication and sacrifices in the armed forces, particularly the RMAF. The aerial salute featured five PC-7 MKII aircraft flying in formation, followed by four EC-725 AP helicopters, three F/A-18D Hornet fighter jets, three C-130H transport aircraft, two Sukhoi SU-30MKM jets and an Airbus A400M strategic airlifter. A total of 427 officers and personnel, led by Lieutenant Colonel Muhd Faizal Abdul Rahim, also took part in the full ceremonial parade. Asghar, whose call sign is 'Gunjiz', had assumed leadership of the RMAF on March 7, 2022. He said various efforts had been undertaken to transform the service into a credible, modern force capable of defending the nation's airspace. He said several initiatives outlined in the Defence White Paper had been successfully implemented through the RMAF Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55). Also present were Air Operations commander Lieutenant-General Datuk Masro Kaliwon, Air Education and Training commander Lieutenant-General Datuk Nur Hafis Abdul Karim, and Air Support commander Major General Datuk Ahmad Khusairi Ahmad Fadli. In a symbolic final gesture, Asghar, accompanied by his wife, Puan Sri Bibi Nasratjahan Gulab Khan, boarded a Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jet which was ceremoniously towed past the RMAF personnel for a "street-lining" parade. The same aircraft had been flown by Asghar last month during the aerial display segment at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25). He is set to retire officially on Dec 26.

RMAF to get new defence assets from October
SHAH ALAM: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will begin receiving several new defence assets and systems in stages starting this October, continuing through to the end of 2028. Outgoing RMAF chief General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan said the acquisitions include unmanned aerial systems (UAS), FA-50 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), air defence radars and new helicopters. He said these procurements are part of the RMAF Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55), as outlined in the Defence White Paper, and are expected to significantly boost the nation's overall defence capabilities. "In summary, several systems and platforms such as UAS, FA-50 LCA, MPA, air defence radars and new helicopters are currently in the procurement process and will begin entering the RMAF inventory from October this year, with more to follow in 2026, 2027 and by the end of 2028. "These assets will enhance RMAF's ability to defend our national airspace," he said at the new RMAF chief pinning-of-ranks and change-of-command ceremony at Subang Air Base. Asghar, who is set to end his service this Dec 26, is succeeded by his deputy, General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris as the 21st RMAF chief. Asghar said that since taking over leadership of the RMAF on March 7, 2022, various efforts have been undertaken to ensure the airforce remains a credible, modern and capable force in defending the nation's skies. "All the policies and directions laid out in my Commander's Order were based on six core pillars – capability enhancement, organisational excellence, empowerment of personnel, resource management, industry collaboration, and welfare sustainability. "Alhamdulillah, during my tenure, we successfully implemented several of the planned initiatives outlined in CAP55," he said. He added that strengthening the training structure and human capital development was also prioritised, with officers and personnel sent for various courses both locally and abroad to ensure operational readiness remained at the highest level. He said the RMAF's active role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, along with hosting international exhibitions such as the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 and 2025, had effectively showcased its capabilities on the regional and global stages. These achievements, he said, have elevated the RMAF's standing as a key driver of air defence diplomacy and helped strengthen military ties with friendly nations. Asghar said the welfare of RMAF personnel was never sidelined, with various initiatives implemented, including housing, mental health care and family support programmes. "The well-being of our personnel, who form the backbone of the force, has always been given due attention," he said. Asghar also expressed his appreciation to all RMAF personnel, whom he credited for their unwavering cooperation in ensuring the success of all plans during his tenure as the service's top commander.
