Bursa flat in early trade after downbeat Wall Street performance

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia made a flat start on Wednesday, following the downbeat performance on Wall Street overnight.
At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) inched down 0.29 of a point, or 0.02%, to 1,525.11 from Tuesday's close of 1,525.40. The benchmark index opened 1.63 points lower at 1,523.77.
The market breadth was weaker, with decliners outnumbering gainers 178 to 108, while 282 counters were unchanged, 1,877 untraded, and eight suspended.
Turnover stood at 165.78 million shares worth RM85.02 million.
Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said Wall Street's initial rally faded as hotter-than-expected inflation data failed to ease tariff concerns and increased bets that the US Federal Reserve will hold interest rates.
'Following Wall Street's downbeat performance, the local bourse could start on a weaker tone. However, we believe the overall situation may favour the technology stocks with the resumption of chip sales in China, and the technology sector on the local front may see decent buying interest,' it said in a note today.
The brokerage firm also favours the real estate investment trusts sector on the back of the recent Bank Negara Malaysia overnight policy rate cut, 'while the consumer sector may benefit from downtrading activities as inflationary pressures remain sticky.'
Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank fell one sen to RM9.64, Tenaga Nasional lost six sen to RM13.84, and CIMB was three sen lower at RM6.60. Public Bank gained one sen to RM4.27 while IHH Healthcare was flat at RM6.58.
In active trade, NexG added half a sen to 48 sen, Nationgate went up by two sen to RM1.51, Green Ocean Corporation inched up one sen to 13.5 sen, Zetrix AI was 1.5 sen higher at 94.5 sen, and TWL remained unchanged at 2.5 sen.
On the broader index board, the FBM Emas Index dropped 7.99 points to 11,468.09, the FBMT 100 Index slipped 6.30 points to 11,231.31, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index eased 3.44 points to 11,479.74. The FBM 70 Index narrowed 27.40 points to 16,661.0, while the FBM ACE Index inched down four points to 4,583.62.
By sector, the Financial Services Index declined 17.28 points to 17,485.37, the Energy Index edged down 0.93 of a point to 737.99, and the Plantation Index improved 13.63 points to 7,432.05. The Industrial Products and Services Index shaved 0.02 of a point to 153.37.

SST exemptions for key construction projects, including homes, parks, and public toilets, says Ahmad Maslan

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — The government continues to support the construction sector by granting Sales and Services Tax (SST) exemptions for selected projects, particularly those involving residential buildings and public facilities, including houses of worship, recreational parks and public toilets, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. He said essential building materials such as cement, aggregate (gravel) and sand remain zero-rated under the sales tax to help reduce the burden on developers and ensure the continuity of infrastructure projects. 'Selected business-to-business (B2B) activities are subject to certain conditions. For instance, main contractors are subject to SST, but not to subcontractors earning below the threshold of RM1.5 million,' he said during an oral question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today. Ahmad was responding to a question from Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) regarding the categories of construction projects exempted from SST, as well as the ministry's steps to ensure that existing projects are not affected by its implementation. In line with the government's commitment to implement SST fairly and effectively, he said, companies and contractors that carry out contracts that do not allow for review will be granted a one-year exemption, subject to terms and conditions. 'This incentive is part of the government's measures to ensure the construction industry has sufficient time to adjust the system, streamline the registration process and obtain accurate clarification on the implementation of SST,' he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad said that there has been no discussion to increase the threshold value for registration of taxable services for the construction sector from RM1.5 million to RM3 million. He was responding to a supplementary question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) regarding the industry's proposal for the threshold value for registration of SST taxable services to be increased from RM1.5 million to RM3 million, particularly for construction and rental and leasing categories. — Bernama

Bank Negara trims 2025 GDP forecast to 4.0–4.8pc amid global uncertainties

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has revised Malaysia's 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) growth projection to between 4.0 per cent and 4.8 per cent from 4.5 per cent - 5.5 per cent previously. The projection takes into account various tariff scenarios, ranging from continued elevation of tariffs to more favourable trade negotiation outcomes. In a statement today, the central bank said the forecast remains subject to uncertainties surrounding the global economy, both on the downside and the upside. 'Favourable trade negotiation outcomes, pro-growth policies in major economies, continued demand for electrical and electronic goods, and robust tourism activity could raise Malaysia's export and growth prospects,' it said. Meanwhile, BNM Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said the Malaysian economy remains resilient despite global uncertainties, supported by the outcome of structural reforms undertaken over the years. 'The sustained strength in economic activity and moderate inflation provides a supportive environment to pursue structural reforms for a more resilient and competitive Malaysia in the future,' he said. — Bernama

Tariff uncertainties to pose little impact on CIMB's FY2026: Group CEO

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Group Holdings Bhd says the prevailing uncertainty surrounding global tariff policies will not have a direct impact on its financial performance for the financial year ending 2026 (FY2026). This will be due to the group's diversified income strategy and sustainable operational efficiency. CIMB Group chief executive officer Novan Amirudin said while global tariffs could potentially weigh on regional economic growth, the impact on the bank remains limited and largely depends on how the additional costs are distributed along the supply chain. "It depends on whether the costs are borne by producers in Asean, consumers in the United States, or absorbed by governments through incentives and supportive policies," he said during a fireside chat held in conjunction with CIMB's Asean Media Day today. He added that if restrictions on exports from China to the United States prompt manufacturers to relocate to Asean, any resulting oversupply could put pressure on local producers. "This situation could slow regional growth and indirectly affect the financial sector, as loan growth is closely tied to economic activity," he explained. Nevertheless, he said CIMB does not rely solely on interest income but has also strengthened its non-interest income streams. "About 30 per cent of the group's income comes from non-interest sources, including transaction fees, foreign exchange, payment solutions and advisory services. "These initiatives are aligned with our Forward 30 strategy, which emphasises revenue stream diversification," he said. On the recent Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) cut by Bank Negara Malaysia, he said the move impacts the lending rates offered to customers. CIMB also adjusted its deposit rates, such as fixed deposits, which are now at lower levels. "A lower OPR typically reduces funding costs. Therefore, the net impact on the bank depends on how much lending and deposit rates are adjusted. "If we are able to reduce deposit rates further, we can still maintain our net interest margins," he said.
