CM Naidu calls for plastic-free Andhra, links excessive use to cancer risk

on Saturday called for the elimination of plastic to protect the environment, claiming that "excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer".
Addressing a meeting in Tirupati as part of the '
Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra
' initiative, Naidu said that plastic has become "the biggest demon" threatening the environment.
The vision lays out a comprehensive framework for economic advancement, social equity,
environmental sustainability
, and governance excellence.
"To protect the environment, we must chase away this plastic demon. Excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer... No one should fall victim to this," the chief minister said.
From toothbrushes to the plates we eat from, he pointed out that plastic has become a part of daily life, adding that common items like water bottles, cups, and covers are harmful.
He further claimed that "
plastic pollution
is contaminating the soil", hindering the percolation of rainwater, and causing other environmental issues.
Naidu announced plans to make the state secretariat plastic-free by August 15, extend this initiative to all municipalities by October 2, and implement it across the state by December.
Calling on every citizen to be part of the 'Swachh Andhra' mission by keeping their homes and surroundings clean, he also promised to clear all piled-up garbage across the state by October.
The chief minister noted that the TDP-led NDA government had approved solar panel installations for 20 lakh homes, turning rooftops, offices, and fields into hubs of solar energy.

. With global warming triggering multiple challenges, green energy is the only solution," he said.
Criticising YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, Naidu alleged that the latter "created chaos" during a recent visit to Bangarupalyam by "dumping mangoes" on the road while meeting farmers.
Naidu said the NDA alliance government came to the rescue of mango farmers by ensuring a payment of Rs 12,000 per tonne-Rs 4,000 from the government and Rs 8,000 from buyers.
Earlier, during a visit to an integrated waste processing plant at Tukivakam village in Tirupati, the chief minister directed officials to make Andhra Pradesh "a national model in waste processing and utilisation." PTI STH SSK

The confrontation peaked at NCP state president Sunil Tatkare's presser in Latur, where members of Chhava Sanghatna threw playing cards at him while demanding Kokate's resignation. The symbolic protest quickly descended into violence when local NCP workers allegedly assaulted the protesters after Tatkare left the venue, with one activist being injured after being struck on the head with a chair. The row began when opposition MLA Rohit Pawar of NCP (SP) posted the videos on X, claiming they showed Kokate too busy gaming to be bothered about House proceedings. The allegation gained enough traction within hours to trigger protests. In Nashik, Kokate dismissed the allegations as deliberate misrepresentation. The minister said he was attempting to monitor Lower House proceedings from the Upper House of Maharashtra's bicameral legislature when an online gaming advertisement appeared on his phone. "I tried to skip it a couple of times, but couldn't. Finally, on my third attempt, it worked," Kokate explained, accusing Pawar of selectively editing the footage to suit his narrative. "The MLA chose to show only the part that suited him instead of showing the complete video," Kokate said, dismissing the controversy as an attempt by the opposition to defame a BJP-led govt "doing good work". At NCP's Latur presser, Chhava Sanghatna, led by Vijaykumar Ghadge, initially submitted a memorandum to Tatkare seeking Kokate's resignation before the card-throwing protest. After the NCP state chief left the venue, local party politicians allegedly confronted the Maratha activists in a nearby room, where the situation turned violent despite police's attempts to maintain order. No arrests had been made till late Sunday, although the alleged retaliation drew sharp criticism from across the political spectrum. Ghadge-Patil condemned what he claimed was an attack by "NCP goons". He said Chhava Sanghatna, which he described as an organisation of "farmers' sons", would retaliate. NCP spokesperson Suraj Chavan defended the party workers' actions as a "natural reaction" to alleged attempts to humiliate party functionaries. He acknowledged Chhava Sanghatna's right to democratic protest, but suggested the card-throwing protest was out of line. Vidya Chavan of NCP (SP) termed the assault on the protesters "horrible", saying that questioning politicians' actions was a democratic right. She urged minister Kokate to "speak the truth and accept his mistake". Throughout the controversy, Kokate maintained that his detractors like Rohit Pawar had been focusing on trivial matters - "my clothes, my cars and such things" - rather than the govt's agricultural policies. He said the legislator would have highlighted the govt's work if he had farmers' interests in mind. Central team assesses damages in Himachal Pradesh's Thunag; DC says Rs 394cr lost
Kullu/Mandi: A central govt team visited the affected areas of Thunag sub-division in Mandi district on Sunday to assess the damage caused by floods and landslides, and was informed that the area suffered Rs 394 crore in damages. Led by G Parthasarathi, joint secretary, ministry of home affairs, the six-member team inspected the damage to houses and other properties in Bagsiad and the nearby village of Sharan. The team also inspected the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and other damaged structures in the area. During a meeting with the visiting team, Mandi deputy commissioner Apoorv Devgan put losses suffered in the district at Rs 708 crore. Devgan said Karsog suffered a loss of Rs 55 crore and Dharampur of Rs 47 crore. At Fanyaar village, the team reviewed the destruction caused by a landslide and gathered information about the damage to a drinking water supply scheme on Chhadi Khad in Dhangudhar. Later, the team visited Thunag market and assessed the damage to homes, shops, and various institutions, as well as the impact of the severe flooding on the local economy. In Deji village, which was among the worst-hit areas, the team examined a road washed away by the flood and the damage to other public infrastructure. Devgan briefed the central team on the widespread damage in the region and also shared information about the ongoing restoration efforts. Local MLA and leader of the opposition Jairam Thakur also accompanied the central team and shared information about the disaster-related losses in the area. Special secretary (revenue and disaster management) D C Rana apprised the team of the relief and rehabilitation works being carried out by the state govt in the disaster-affected areas. Chairing the meeting, Kandarp V Patel, deputy secretary, ministry of finance, expressed sympathy with the people and said after receiving the final damage reports, the team will prepare a comprehensive report to be presented to the National Executive Committee on Disaster Management. Based on its recommendations, the final report will be submitted to the high-level committee chaired by the Union home minister. He urged all concerned departments to submit their damage assessment reports in line with the prescribed norms. A total of 20 transformers are also non-functional, with 19 in Gohar sub-division of the district. Forty water supply schemes, 22 alone in Thunag sub-division, are still to be repaired. Liquor ‘scam': YSRCP MP played key role in policy changes
SIT arrests YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy VIJAYAWADA: YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy, arrested by an Andhra Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the alleged liquor scam case, has been remanded in judicial custody till Aug 1. Following his arrest Saturday night, he was taken for medical exam to Vijayawada Govt Hospital on Sunday and later produced before ACB Special Court. According to the remand report, Midhun Reddy has been named as accused No 4 in the case related to alleged irregularities in the state's liquor policy between 2019 and 2024, resulting in a 'misappropriation' of about Rs 3,500 crore. The report alleges Midhun Reddy played a role in orchestrating policy changes and coordinating with co-accused to secure kickbacks from distilleries and suppliers. The SIT alleged Midhun Reddy influenced Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Ltd officials. According to SIT, kickbacks collected from liquor suppliers were routed through a hierarchical chain. The funds were first collected and handed over allegedly to Kesireddy Rajasekhar Reddy, who then 'transferred' them to ex-MP Vijay Sai Reddy, Midhun Reddy, & businessman Govindappa Balaji. These individuals 'transferred' money allegedly to ex-CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy . To execute scheme, officers 'amenable' to the accused's designs were 'strategically appointed to key positions' within govt.
