Gilbert Arenas opens up about why Michael Jordan was never his favorite player growing up
Most kids growing up in the '90s worshipped Michael Jordan—but not Gilbert Arenas. Despite being raised in a Bulls-loving home and forced to watch every MJ game, his heart latched onto a different star, Penny Hardaway.
One highlight reel, one jersey number change, and Arenas was all in. His story proves that sometimes, your true basketball hero isn't the one with the rings—but the one who made you feel something.
How Penny Hardaway's High‑School Highlights Stole Arenas' Fan Heart
Gilbert Arenas shares that while his dad insisted he watch all the Chicago Bulls games—complete with the
Michael Jordan
craze—his genuine love for basketball originated from a different source. After he caught Penny Hardaway's thrilling high school highlights leading up to the 1993 NBA Draft, he was completely hooked.
Arenas recalls, 'My first favorite player was Penny Hardaway… I changed my number to 25 in high school' as a nod to his idol. That one gesture laid the groundwork for his lifelong devotion.
GILBERT ARENAS EXPOSES HIMSELF AS THE ULTIMATE GLAZER
In a world where most were mesmerized by Jordan's six NBA titles, Arenas felt a subtle pull towards Hardaway's Magic—their speed, skill, and style made a stronger impression than Jordan's honors.
This passion wasn't just a phase. During high school, Arenas would get into debates with his classmates to champion Hardaway as the better player and purposefully selected #25—the number Penny wore while playing for the Orlando Magic.

It wasn't a lack of understanding about how great Jordan was. Arenas admired him—his father had even filled their house with Bulls memorabilia—but emotions won out over the accolades. 'Michael Jordan was not my favorite player… but my dad forced me to watch Jordan all day'.
This tug-of-war between responsibility and enthusiasm uncovers a significant truth: the first fandoms we create aren't always driven by numbers or victories—they're shaped by intuition and individual bonds.
Gilbert Arenas took that early motivation and turned it into results: while at Arizona, he snagged First-Team All-Pac‑10 honors in 2001 and capped off his sophomore year by guiding the Wildcats to the NCAA Championship game. He was picked 31st overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2001, and he climbed the ranks to become the NBA Most Improved Player in 2003, eventually becoming a three-time All-Star with Washington.
During his career, Arenas embodied Penny's style—quick guard moves, bold scoring, and a game that was all about creativity and confidence. His personal motto? Go with what inspires you, not what conforms to expectations.

Memphis Grizzlies make a sneaky trade on Sunday that could change their defensive outlook
The story of Gilbert Arenas highlights how fandom can be irrational—and that's part of its charm. Even though Michael Jordan was a global superstar, it was the style of Penny Hardaway that caught the eye of a young kid, not the championships.

Preparations for Dasara festivities begin ahead of schedule in Mys
Mysuru: Preparations for this year's Dasara festivities have begun well ahead of schedule, even though the official celebrations are set to commence on Sept 22. Days after the Dasara High Power Committee, chaired by chief minister Siddaramaiah , met in Bengaluru and decided to celebrate the festival on a grand scale, the Mysuru district administration, which has the onerous task of hosting the 11-day festival, formed 19 subcommittees to oversee various aspects of the festival. Usually, these committees are formed some 45 days before the big-ticket event. Senior officials have been appointed as Dasara deputy special officers and working presidents, ensuring a smooth and well-coordinated celebration across all fronts. Senior officials, including police commissioner Seema Latkar (Dasara procession subcommittee), SP N Vishnuvardhana (Yuva Dasara and Yuva Sambrahama subcommittee), ZP CEO Ukesh Kumar (cultural subcommittee), MCC Sheik Tanveer Asif (sanitation subcommittee), ADC P Shivaraju (reception subcommittee), CESC MD Munigopal Raju (illumination subcommittee), archaeology commissioner A Devaraju (fine arts subcommittee), and ASP L Nagesh (wrestling subcommittee), have been appointed as Dasara deputy special officers. They will be assisted by working presidents and member-secretaries. While many of the officials named to the panels have experience as they have served in Mysuru earlier, for some like Ukesh Kumar, Sheik Tanveer Asif, DCP (L&O) Bindu Rani, and DCP (traffic) KS Sundarraj, this will be their first Dasara season. As the monsoon has begun one month in advance, leading to dams in the state reaching their maximum levels, mainly in the Cauvery basin, the govt is keen to celebrate the festival on a grand scale like in 2024 when it extended Rs 40 crore for the festival. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! One of the key events marking the beginning of Dasara–Gaja Payana, the ceremonial march of the Dasara elephants from the forest to Mysuru–is scheduled for Aug 4. In anticipation, officials have begun detailed arrangements to ensure a smooth and symbolic start to the celebrations. Speaking to TOI, C Narayanagowda, president of the Hotel Owners' Association, welcomed the early preparations. "Starting preparations well in advance is a commendable move. It eliminates the usual last-minute chaos and ensures better planning and execution. We are hopeful of a high-quality celebration this year, thanks to the proactive approach of the govt," he said.

'Sitaare Zameen Par' review The Times of India gave the film 3 stars and praised its balance of emotion and message. Here's an excerpt from their review, 'Despite a sensitive and layered subject, R S Prasanna's directorial venture, written by Divy Nidhi Sharma, remains a wholesome, feel-good watch. It strikes a commendable balance between delivering a message and educating viewers about ID, all with a lighthearted touch. At its core is a message of inclusivity—conveying that people with ID are employable, independent, full of life, and deeply empathetic. ' The review also praised how the characters' traits were shown with sensitivity, 'The film sensitively portrays the characteristic traits of the players' conditions without reducing them to labels—Bantu's (Vedant Sharma) stimming through ear-scratching, Guddu's (GopiKrishnan K Verma) aquaphobia, Sharmaji's (Rishi Shahani) speech impairment, and the less-recognised invisible autism in high-functioning Hargovind (Naman Misra). These are presented as facets of their personalities, not just symptoms.'

NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers could be chasing $251,019,650 Washington Wizards superstar to form Big 3 with LeBron James and Luka Doncic
LeBron James and Luka Doncic (Image via Getty) The Los Angeles Lakers are once again making waves in the NBA offseason, this time emerging as a serious contender to land veteran guard Bradley Beal if he hits the buyout market. With the recent addition of DeAndre Ayton on a team-friendly deal, the Lakers have positioned themselves as an appealing destination for stars looking to chase a title. According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, Beal has been exploring potential landing spots, and the Lakers are firmly on his radar. Los Angeles Lakers Could Strengthen Star-Studded Roster with Bradley Beal Bradley Beal (Image via Getty) Bradley Beal's name adds even more intrigue to an already eventful summer for the Los Angeles Lakers . Despite a few underwhelming seasons, the 3-time All-Star remains a highly productive scorer in the league. Last season with the Phoenix Suns, Beal posted solid numbers: Stat Value Points per game 17.0 Assists per game 3.7 Rebounds per game 3.3 Steals per game 1.1 A potential buyout scenario could allow the Lakers to land Beal at a bargain, similar to how they secured DeAndre Ayton. Adding Beal to a core that already includes LeBron James , Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves could instantly elevate the Lakers' offensive firepower. Beal's Role Could Bolster Lakers' Second Unit One of the most enticing aspects of Beal joining the Lakers is his ability to lead the second unit. At this stage of his career, Beal's scoring and playmaking off the bench could be invaluable for a team aiming to contend deep into the playoffs. Pairing him with LeBron, Luka, and Ayton would create an offensive juggernaut. As pointed out by The Sporting News, 'With those four and Reaves, the Lakers should be the top offense in the NBA.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo However, while the offensive upside is undeniable, defensive concerns could linger. Los Angeles Lakers Fans Hoping for Bradley Beal Buyout For now, much hinges on whether Bradley Beal and the Suns agree to a buyout. If that happens, expect the Lakers to aggressively pursue the veteran guard. With his scoring pedigree and experience, Beal could be the final piece the Lakers need to compete with the NBA's elite.
