There's a way to roll back the clock on your biological age — and, according to a new(ish) study, you can do it on your daily walk. No frills, no nonsense, just a small tweak for big results.
We already know there are many benefits to walking, including a boost to your cardiovascular health, stronger muscles, bones and joints, ramped up calorie burn, a healthier metabolism and better mood and emotional wellbeing.
If that's not enough, research straight out of Britain has shown that one particular aspect of your walks could supercharge your results, including reducing your biological age by up to 16 years. Yep, you read that correctly.
And no, it's not 10,000 steps, a weighted vest, or walking backwards. This is the one thing you need to know the next time you lace up a pair of the best hiking boots and head out.
Research, published in Nature in 2022, found that your speed could play a role in cutting your biological age. The study assessed over 400,000 Brits and biological age (how quickly you're aging based on chemical markers) and found that speed made a difference.
Results showed that those with a steady to average and brisk walking pace 'had significantly longer LTL compared with slow walkers.' LTL, meaning leucocyte telomere length, is a marker of biological age.
Using 'accelerometer-assessed measures of physical activity,' the researchers found associations between longer LTL and 'habitual activity intensity,' rather than total amount of activity. In other words, your pace may do more for your health than total steps.

While it's true that the more you move during the day, the better for your metabolism and overall health, we now know that you don't need 10,000 steps every day to maximize it; as little as 7,000 steps per day could be enough!
But if you plan to track your step count, making your walk more brisk could be more beneficial across the same distance than an amble. That said, I love a slow walk, and recently took up intuitive walking to boost mindfulness, so I'm a firm believer in a time and place for everything.
Given that brisk walking, like power walking, can have a positive impact on weight management and cardiovascular fitness, it checks out that this could also improve your biological age, too.
So what about speed? The study used self-reported walking pace, providing participants with a touchscreen Q&A and response options of 'slow,' 'steady/average,' or 'brisk.'Slow pace was defined as less than 3mph, steady pace was between 3 -4mph and brisk walking was over 4mph.
There you have it. A faster walking pace is associated with longer LTL, potentially cutting up to 16 years off your biological age. The study showed that brisk walkers had a biological age of up to 16 years younger, and that brisk walking could lead to a younger biological age rather than the other way around.
The study also suggests that time spent habitually in higher-intensity activities like brisk walking had a stronger association with biological age than the total amount of walking or distance.
All in all, this supports the idea that more intensive and habitual movement, like increased walking pace, can impact biological markers and overall health. And better still, if you increase your pace, even a short walk could boost longevity.

Americans born today could "live in a world where the U.S. can only produce half as much of its key food crops," CNN's recent headline read. The ensuing reporting focused on a groundbreaking study recently published in Nature — one of the most widely cited scientific journals globally — and the outlet described its findings as "stark." Study authors examined the impacts of rising temperatures through a universally understood and relevant lens: the global food supply. Put plainly, the researchers' calculations were grim: Every 1°C (1.8°F) increase in average global temperatures will result in a worldwide reduction in food production equivalent to 120 fewer calories per person, per day. Study author Solomon Hsiang of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability broke it down further when discussing their findings. "If the climate warms by 3 degrees, that's basically like everyone on the planet giving up breakfast," Hsiang warned. It's well-documented that climate-related matters are routinely and misleadingly cast in doubt, framed as a matter of belief rather than settled science. Scientists harnessing NASA's James Webb Space Telescope took what appears to be the first-ever direct picture of an exoplanet resulting in its discovery, in yet another accomplishment for the mighty space observatory. An international team of astronomers published a paper on the historic finding in the prestigious journal Nature. "If confirmed, this would represent Webb's first direct image discovery of a planet," they wrote of the finding, "and the lightest planet ever seen with this technique outside the solar system." The planet, dubbed TWA 7 b, orbits a young star and appears to be about the size of Neptune. Though the James Webb has directly imaged other exoplanets previously, they were previously known to exist; in this case, in an apparent first-ever accomplishment, the act of capturing the picture also established the existence of the distant world. Since its launch in 2021, the James Webb has been at the forefront of many exciting space discoveries, from plumbing the depths of the early universe to investigating how our solar system was formed. It's able to do all this because it's the largest space telescope ever built, even bigger than Hubble Space Telescope, with a primary mirror measuring over 21 feet in diameter. TWA 7 b was difficult to detect due to the glare of the orbiting star, so the team developed a clever mechanism that mimics an eclipse in order to pick out any bodies that are lurking in the blinding light. The exoplanet orbits the star TWA 7, a relatively young red dwarf at 6.4 million years of age that sports a sizable debris field. "Here we're looking at a system that is about 6 [million] years old, so we are really witnessing the youth of the planetary system," Anne-Marie Lagrange, astrophysicist and first author of the paper, told The Guardian. A new study published in Nature reveals that adopting a plant-rich or vegan diet offers serious benefits for both personal health and the environment. Researchers in Iceland compared the health and environmental impacts of vegan and omnivorous diets. They found that individuals following a plant-based diet not only met more nutritional recommendations, but also decreased their carbon footprint as a result of avoiding meat-production-related pollution. However, both groups showed room for improvement in fully meeting dietary recommendations. While plant-rich diets have long been associated with health benefits, few studies have directly compared vegan diets to omnivorous ones, until now. The research team analyzed dietary data from 651 omnivores and 68 vegans in Iceland, discovering that the vegan group's diet produced 50% less planet-warming pollution, had nine times higher fiber compliance, and consumed less saturated fat than the meat and dairy consumers. "Our results also indicate that in our omnivore population a shift towards a more plant-rich diet without eliminating all foods of animal origin could lead to substantial nutritional and environmental benefits," the study concluded. Another recent study from Harvard Health Publishing involving identical twins found that those on a vegan diet had significantly lower LDL cholesterol and insulin levels, and lost about four pounds — all in just eight weeks. Even if you're not interested in going vegan, these findings suggest that transitioning to a plant-forward diet can have meaningful effects on both short- and long-term health. In addition to personal wellness, the environmental impact is substantial. Meat and dairy production are leading contributors to planet-warming emissions, excessive water use, and land degradation globally. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, agriculture is the top source of methane and nitrous oxide pollution in the U.S., largely stemming from livestock and factory farming.
