Goodwood drug bust nets R54. 3 million worth of Tik and heroin

Two foreign nationals are expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate's Court on Tuesday after police seized a total of R54.3 million worth of drugs.
The Western Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, said the bust comes after an intelligence-driven operation in the area.
'At approximately 1.45pm, members attached to Operation Restore operationalised information which led them to a residence situated at Molteno Street in Goodwood where they initiated a search of the premises. During the search, the members discovered and seized 6kg of heroin, which was found in a cupboard in one of the rooms,' Pojie said.

A 32-year-old Tanzanian national who was an occupant of the room was arrested and charged for dealing in heroin with an estimated street value go about R1 million.
As police officers extended the search to another bedroom, they found more heroin.
'Officers found 100 grams of heroin with an estimated value of R16,000. This led to the arrest of a 28-year-old Burundi national for the possession of drugs,' Pojie said.
He said the officers continued to search the home and came across more contraband.
'The members expanded the search, leading to the discovery of 145kg of tik and 16kg of heroin found in the roof of the residence. The estimated street value is R53.3 million, bringing the total value of the discovery to R54.3million,' Pojie said.
He said the investigation in this matter is being conducted by the narcotics section located within the Provincial Organised Crime Unit detectives.

Chief among two more arrested in KZN DA councillor murder case
The DA councillor was gunned down in front of his wife and children. The Political Killings Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has arrested two more suspects, including a chief, in connection with the murder of DA Councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu. Ndlovu was shot and killed in December 2023 at his home near Mpophomeni, in Howick. The 56-year-old chief was arrested along with a 26-year-old suspect who allegedly coordinated the councillor's murder from inside Pietermaritzburg Correctional Centre. Suspects to appear in court The pair faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Police national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the suspects are expected to appear before the Howick Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 31 July. They join Thobani Masobho Hlongwa, 31, Khayelihle Shabalala, 31, and a traditional leader under the Nxamalala Tribal Authority, Zwelithini Buthelezi, 43. Ndlovu's murder At the time of his death, Ndlovu was attached to the Umgeni Local Municipality at the time of his murder. He was shot more than 10 times in front of his wife and children outside their KwaZulu-Natal home. 'We had lost hope' Speaking to the SABC in May, Ndlovu's younger brother Sthembiso said the arrest of Buthelezi – after handing himself over – brought some hope to the family. 'We had lost hope that the case will progress, but now the way things are going, we believe that everything will go accordingly. We are happy that he handed himself over to the police, even though we don't know his plan for that,' Sthembiso said. 'The death of our brother is still difficult to talk about. He left his wife and two children — one was just five months old. It's an uphill for his wife, who is now a single parent.' Ethiopian who tried to defraud Sassa fined R60,000
Ethiopian Etebo Lapso Wangore has been sentenced to a R60,000 fine or eight months' imprisonment after he was convicted of corruption linked to attempts to defraud the social grant system. The specialised commercial crimes court in Vryburg in the North West imposed the sentence on Wangore, 43, this week, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Wednesday. Wangore entered South Africa as an asylum seeker and later established himself as a businessman operating several spaza shops in the North West. 'Investigations uncovered that he was part of a syndicate that included South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) employees involved in creating fraudulent Sassa beneficiaries, commonly referred to as ghost beneficiaries, defrauding the social grant system,' NPA spokesperson Sivenathu Gunya said. On November 15 2022, Wangore approached an agent at a post office and offered her R20,000 to arrange 250 Sassa cards. He further offered R1,000 per card as payment for each additional card she could supply. The official reported the matter to the police, leading to an entrapment operation, and Wangore was arrested on February 23 2023. He was later released on bail. Wangore pleaded guilty. In aggravation of sentence, state advocate Fhulufhelo Munyai emphasised the severity of the crime, explaining how such offences undermined the integrity of the country's social assistance system and negatively affected the economy. The court also ordered that his Toyota Hilux bakkie be forfeited to the state as it was used in the commission of the crime.

Shock allegations against Municipal Manager by DA over alleged R1 billion tenders for kickbacks The Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) has been described as 'a toothless dog' by councillors. Well, not anymore, as evidenced by the shocking announcement by the DA that Municipal Manager Mandla Mnguni will be investigated over his involvement in an alleged tenders for kickbacks scheme, worth a staggering R1b. Through its MPAC Chairperson Hennie Niemann, the DA in Steve Tshwete has today launched an investigation into allegations of tender fraud in electrification projects. According to Niemann, a whistleblower reached out to MPAC last week to investigate, and if necessary, open a case of fraud against Mnguni, for allegedly awarding tenders for electrification projects to known associates. It is alleged that Mnguni used his position to appoint two companies, with the same owner, to carry out electrification projects worth R1b across the 2023/24-2025/26 financial years. The whistleblower alleges that Mnguni ignored recommendations of the bid adjudication committee, which warned him about possible perceived collusion. Mnguni also allegedly defied two legal opinions, binding him to abide by the bid adjudication committee's recommendations. In addition, the whistleblower alleges that Mnguni received alleged kickbacks in the form of a house in Aerorand, in which he resides, as well a farm in Stoffberg and an emergency helicopter for the ambulance company he allegedly owns. Taking these allegations seriously, the DA has launched an investigation through its MPAC chairperson by requesting the necessary bid evaluation reports and the adjudication committee recommendations that date back to 2023. Niemann said he'll ensure that the investigation request is fairly, and transparently, handled. Niemann added, 'We will prioritise this investigation and make sure that we provide a detailed report within the next 21 days.' Phone calls to Mnguni for comment went unanswered. He also did not respond to WhatsApp requests for comment before publication.
