Man charged with attempted murder mistakenly released from court custody
In hurried announcement Friday evening, police said the man was "erroneously released from custody" almost 24 hours earlier after he had attended a court appearance in relation to the attempted murder charge.
They say he poses a serious threat to the public.
"He should be considered armed and dangerous. We just want to make sure the public is aware and that they call 911 and do not approach this this male if they see him," said Acting Insp. Maria Wright. "Community safety is a top priority for us. This is why we're [making this announcement]."
Police identified the person who was released as Cody Anthony Leblanc Ashe, 28, of London. He is accused of attempted murder and possession of a firearm contrary to a probation order among other charges.
Leblanc Ashe is accused of carrying out a shooting at a community housing complex in London's east-end that sent one man to hospital with serious injuries nearly a year ago on Sept. 11, 2024.
He was arrested in late October 2024 at a home near the site of the shooting.
Wright described him as a Black male, weighing approximately 229 pounds, standing 6 feet, 4 inches, with a medium build, black hair, scruffy facial hair and brown eyes. A mugshot provided to CBC News includes a tattoo above his right eye.
Wright said Leblanc Ashe was not released by police, but was instead released while in custody of the Ministry of the Solicitor General.
Police can't confirm whether he was released from the London courthouse or from the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre, where he was being held. They said they are waiting for confirmation from the Solicitor General.
CBC News has reached out to the province for comment on the circumstances of the release, and will update this story when a response is received.
"He hasn't been in the custody of the London Police for some time. We're working with our community partners to come to an understanding on how this happened," she said.
"But for right now, we're just really looking to apprehend this gentleman, and to bring him in for public safety reasons."
Wright reiterated the public should avoid approaching the accused at all costs, and should instead call 911, the LPS non-emergent line at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Kilograms of meth found in ‘gift-wrapped packages' at Vancouver airport, CBSA says
The CBSA says officers seized 29 kilograms of methamphetamine from a traveller's luggage at Vancouver International Airport on July 18, 2025. (Handout) A traveller bound for Hong Kong was caught with 29 kilograms of methamphetamine at the Vancouver airport last month, according to Canada Border Services Agency. Authorities said the drugs were concealed in 'gift-wrapped packages' – some with cartoon elephants and other colourful designs – then stuffed into two suitcases. Officers intercepted the packages on July 18, the CBSA said. The agency estimated that amount of methamphetamine would represent approximately 150,000 individual doses. 'This seizure is another great example of the dedication and expertise of CBSA officers as they continue to work hard each and every day to prevent dangerous drugs from crossing our borders,' said Nina Patel, CBSA director general for the Pacific Region, in a statement. A 25-year-old Chinese citizen was apprehended and has since been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Shiyu Deng is facing counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking, possession for the purpose of exporting, and exporting a controlled substance. The CBSA said Deng was transferred into RCMP custody, where he remains pending his next court appearance on Wednesday.

2nd-degree murder count laid against man in downtown London stabbing
A second-degree murder charge has been laid against a 30-year-old London man following a stabbing in the city's downtown on Sunday that police say involved two people not known to one another. Emergency crews were called to the area of Colborne Street and Princess Avenue around 1 p.m. on Sunday for a reported stabbing, and located a man with serious, life-threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The suspect fled the scene on foot. The accused, identified as Khamis Toto, 30, of London, was arrested a short distance away, and appeared in court on Monday on a charge of second-degree murder. He'll return to court on Aug. 11. "Investigators have determined that the accused and the victim were not known to each other," police said. It's one of two homicides reported in the city by police on Sunday. Two London teens, 15 and 17, have been charged with second-degree murder after a 27-year-old man sustained fatal injuries in an assault near Breton Park Crescent and Manitoulin Drive around 1:40 a.m. Police had been called to the area following reports of a group of people fighting with weapons. Both homicides remain under investigation.
