Caribbean music celebrated at steelband showcase

The Pacesetters Steel Orchestra is seen playing at the second annual Western Canada Steelband Showcase in Edmonton on July 12, 2025. (CTV News Edmonton/Galen McDougall) The second annual Western Canada Steelband Showcase welcomed artists from New York, the Cayman Islands and across the country to celebrate and enjoy steelpan music. Originating from Trinidad and Tobago, steelpans are heard throughout Caribbean music. STEELBANDS Danielle George, organizer of the Western Canada Steelband Showcase, is seen at the event on July 12, 2025. (CTV News Edmonton/Galen McDougall) Showcase organizer Danielle George said people will often think of Toronto when they think of steelpan music in Canada. 'I thought this would be a great event to get some eyes on this side of Canada and bring all the steelbands together and showcase what they can do,' said George. Bands from Saskatchewan, B.C., Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton filled the day's lineup. STEELBANDS Soloists from Toronto, New York and the Cayman Islands also played. George said people often think there are only a couple of steelbands in western Canada. 'We have quite a bit over here.' The showcase's inaugural year had close to 500 people in attendance.

Art meets skateboarding and community at Canora Courts

Kai Kilkenny is seen performing a trick at Canora Courts on July 12, 2025. (CTV News/Galen McDougall) Lexi Pendzich's love for photography and skateboarding brought people of all ages to Canora Courts – a DIY skatepark – on Saturday for an event called SKATE WORLD. The event showcases Pendzich's photos of skateboarders – particularly women and queer skateboarders – that she's taken over the years. (CTV News Edmonton/Galen McDougall) The local artist and photographer was the artist in residence at HCMA Architecture and Design in 2023 where she explored the world of skateboarding by creating skate deck designs and mini DIY skate obstacles while reflecting on community connection. 'I'm very passionate about community spaces,' said Pendzich at the event Saturday, adding that she is hoping to get people inspired by the world of skateboarding. 'It's amazing to see all sorts of people getting involved with skateboarding and just building a fun, welcoming community. 'I think it starts here at Canora Courts with this special skatepark.' Canora Courts is a makeshift skatepark on the tennis court at the Canora Community League in west Edmonton. The park was established in 2022 in partnership with the community league. Kai Kilkenny, a 19-year-old skater said she found out about the skatepark just a few months ago. 'It's really cool,' said Kilkenny, who has been skating since she was 12 years old. 'I like that it's DIY and that the community has put it together.' Kilkenny thought the idea for the event was a great way to bring people together and maybe inspire kids to skateboard. While Pendzich photos were on display as skateboarders performed tricks at the DIY skatepark in west Edmonton, people were also encouraged to design their own Tech Decks – mini skateboards that can be handled with your fingers.
