Govt mulls revising laws to tackle online drug trade
KAJANG: The Home Ministry is studying the need to amend existing laws or introduce new legislation to address the growing issue of drug sales via online platforms. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the matter has been discussed at the Cabinet Committee on Addressing Drug Issues, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. ALSO READ: MCMC lodges police report over claims of drug sales on TikTok "We see the need to review legal and regulatory aspects to improve enforcement capabilities," he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) i-Deen programme on Tuesday (Aug 5). "This matter involves multiple agencies with different jurisdictions. ALSO READ: Go tougher on online drug trade, govt urged "For example, drug issues fall under the Home Ministry's purview, but if the sale occurs via online platforms, that falls under the jurisdiction of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.' Saifuddin said one of the main challenges in tackling online drug sales is the use of various platforms that are difficult to monitor, especially when transactions occur outside official channels. ALSO READ: Heightened watch over illicit drug sales online He described the trend as a growing threat, warning that easy access to drugs and discreet transactions make enforcement efforts more complicated. "If the transactions happen on official e-commerce platforms, they are easier to detect. "But if social media platforms are used, it becomes more challenging. "This includes cases where delivery services like courier companies are used for small-scale drug distribution,' he added.

Probe into JAC leak will be fair and thorough, says Home Minister
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating all aspects surrounding the alleged leak of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting minutes, which surfaced online on 12 July. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was to ensure the probe is carried out comprehensively, fairly, and in accordance with the rule of law. He said police are also working with related agencies, including JAC to complete this investigation. "An investigation has been carried out under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972, Section 203A of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. "The investigation paper will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action once the investigation is complete," he said. He said this in a written reply to Ramkarpal Singh (PH–Bukit Gelugor) regarding the status of a police report made by a Federal Court judge's officer on purported JAC meeting minutes that were leaked. On July 13, police confirmed receiving a report regarding the leak of a document alleged to be minutes from a JAC meeting, which recently circulated on social media.
