Tourism boom in Lenggong Valley as visitor numbers jump 280pct: MB
LENGGONG: Lenggong Valley continues to record rapid growth as a heritage tourism destination, with tourist arrivals soaring by over 280 per cent in just two years. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the number of tourists rose from 24,770 in 2022 to 114,182 last year, following continuous efforts to develop the area. "Tour guides saw their income increase by 237 per cent, while accommodation operators recorded a 145 per cent increase in revenue over the same period. This development has had a direct impact on the local economy, especially for rural communities, including traditional villages and the Orang Asli, who are now actively involved in tourism-related activities such as handicrafts, traditional food, and homestay programmes," he said. He said this during a dinner event held in conjunction with the evaluation session of the Aspiring Lenggong Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) site here last night. Saarani said scientific studies conducted have identified several areas with development potential, involving 39 geosites, 11 geoarchaeological sites, eight biosites, and 21 cultural and heritage sites. "Five of these sites have been recognised for their international geological value, encompassing unique and interrelated elements of geological heritage, biodiversity, culture, and archaeology. This diversity of resources makes Lenggong Valley not only an important site for research activities but also a competitive international tourism destination," he said. He also said the state government is actively strengthening Lenggong Valley's international standing through collaborations with various international geopark networks and participation in global conferences, including with Japan, South Korea, and Turkiye. "Lenggong Valley is no longer just a tourism destination; it is now a centre for human capital development based on heritage," he added. Lenggong Valley, designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2012, spans 22 square kilometres (sq km), which is about one per cent of the total area of the Aspiring Lenggong Unesco Global Geopark, which covers 2,248 sq km. The UGGp area covers five subdistricts: Durian Pipit, Temelong, Lenggong, Kenering, and Gerik, with a population of around 61,039 people. - BERNAMA

PM: Projects position nation as leader in green innovation KUALA BERANG: The newly launched Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) and Green Hydrogen Hub projects in Terengganu have the potential to attract regional and international investors, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the new alternative energy initiative – a clean and green collaboration between PETRONAS and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) – is aligned with both Malaysia's energy policy and international aspirations for green energy. 'Kenyir is now becoming a focal point of interest for international investors. 'This is not just a boost for Terengganu as Kenyir itself will become a major attraction. The project has also been implemented efficiently and swiftly,' he said at the launch of the ventures at the Sultan Mahmud Power Station in Kenyir yesterday. Also present were Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, TNB chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid and PETRONAS chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh. The pilot HHFS project at the Kenyir Dam has a capacity of 100kW and spans 1,085sqm with 220 solar panels. This demonstrates that Tasik Kenyir, which covers an area of 36,900ha, holds vast potential for floating solar development, with up to 10% of the lake's surface suitable for generating an estimated 2,200MW without disrupting the lake's ecology. The Prime Minister also said the project is linked to the Asean Power Grid, a major regional initiative that will begin with an undersea cable project connecting Vietnam to Kota Baru, Kelantan, before extending to Peninsular Malaysia's grid and eventually to Singapore. 'This means that from Vietnam, an undersea cable project will reach Kelantan, necessitating the construction of a new grid. The existing grid is considered insufficient in capacity. 'The new grid will start from Kelantan, then pass through Terengganu and I believe it must be connected to the capabilities and infrastructure here in Kuala Berang and Kenyir, extending through Pahang, parts of Selangor, Johor and into Singapore.' Anwar stressed that the HHFS and Green Hydrogen Hub projects are crucial, and all relevant parties must work together to expedite their implementation. In addition, the Prime Minister called on PETRONAS and TNB to explore ways to provide Technical and Vocational Education and Training, including upskilling programmes, specifically for local youths in Kuala Berang, Hulu Terengganu. He said the relevant ministries, such as the Education Ministry, the Higher Education Ministry and the Human Resources Ministry, along with the Terengganu government, PETRONAS and TNB, should initiate specialised training programmes for local youths. 'I want to ensure youths from Kuala Berang are given training opportunities, so that the people here won't say that while a major project is located here, their children are only able to open small restaurants or work as cleaners. 'It would be better to plan the training properly so there is a dedicated facility for the youths of Kuala Berang and Terengganu to undergo specialised training. I hope this can be expedited,' Anwar said.

Johor couple reinvents ‘kuih bakar' with durian, beef and sardine — and Singaporeans can't get enough
JOHOR BARU, July 13 — Instead of the usual sweet and fragrant pandan kuih bakar, a husband-and-wife team here are making savoury versions of the traditional delicacy, experimenting with new flavours including durian, beef and sardines. According to Shahrilnizam Mohamed, 54, based on the original kuih bakar recipe of his mother, he and his wife, Mahanum Abdul Rahman, 52, allowed themselves to reimagine the traditional cake with contemporary tastes. 'We want to change the perception that kuih bakar is only meant to be sweet. It can also be savoury and come in a variety of flavours... The idea to create sardine-flavoured kuih bakar was inspired by both my wife and me, as we enjoy sardine dishes,' said Shahrilnizam when met by Bernama at his outlet in Larkin Sentral here today. 'Kuih bakar' made using Shahrilnizam Mohamed's late mother's original recipe, reimagined with modern flavours by him and his wife, Mahanum Abdul Rahman. — Bernama pic The couple began their business in December last year with a capital of RM70,000, and now offer five flavour variations, ranging from classic pandan (RM8) to premium durian (RM15). Shahrilnizam said this unique kuih bakar, which takes between 45 minutes and one hour to bake, is a hit with Singaporean customers, many of whom are willing to wait for long periods to take home their favourite flavours, particularly durian and sardine. During the holiday season, sales can reach up to 450 pieces a day, compared to an average of 200 on regular days, indicating how innovation can elevate this traditional Malaysian delicacy to unexpected heights.
