Warner Bros. Reportedly Eyed Michael Bay To Direct Henry Cavill Superman Sequel
Per The Wrap, Warner Bros. Pictures chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy were considering a 'standalone Henry Cavill-led Superman film going in 2022,' with Transformers helmer Michael Bay, who has never done a straight-up superhero movie before, in the director's chair. While it's unclear how far the deal went, the project was reportedly meant to be straightforward and without the entanglements that follow tie-ins, crossovers, or multiverse productions.
The discussion took place between the departure of the previous head, Walter Hamada, and the induction of Gunn and Safran. In the same year, Cavill would step down as the titular superhero and set his sights on other franchise deals, including a live-action Voltron film adaptation, a Warhammer 40K series for Amazon, and a reboot of the 1986 classic Highlander .
As for Bay, the filmmaker is set to debut his first-ever documentary, We Are Storror , at the 2025 SXSW (pronounced 'South by Southwest') festival. Next on his agenda list are Netflix's action title Fast and Loose , which will reunite him with Bad Boys star Will Smith, and a film adaptation of the classic arcade title OutRun starring Sydney Sweeney.
But first, all eyes are on Gunn's upcoming Superman movie. This time, David Corenswet ( Twisters , Pearl ) is donning the cape, with Rachel Brosnahan ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ) and Nicholas Hoult (the X-Men films) playing Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively.
The superhero flick is one of the six live-action big-screen projects planned for Chapter One of the rebooted cinematic universe, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in June 2026, Clayface in September 2026, The Authority (TBA), The Brave and the Bold , and Swamp Thing . It hits theatres on 10 July.

EA's Failed Live-Service Shooter 'Anthem' To Shut Down Jan 2026
Electronic Arts (EA) has hammered in the final nail in Anthem's coffin, as BioWare's failed 2019 live-service looter shooter will officially shut down on 12 January 2026. Due to the title's online-only nature, this means that the game will be completely unplayable after its servers are taken offline, making it truly a dead game. Premium in-game currency has stopped being sold since 3 July, as though anyone is still buying those anyway, and the game will be removed from the EA Play library on 15 August this year, although it will still be available to download for those who already own the title, until its servers shut down next year. 'After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on 12 January 2026,' wrote the BioWare team on a post announcing the game's shuttering. 'This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline.' In a short Q&A accompanying the post, the team clarified that 'the sunsetting of Anthem has not led to any layoffs', which at least comes as a relief given that EA has gone through a series of massive layoffs over the past few years, including axing 50 jobs at BioWare in 2023, laying off around 670 staff and cancelling a Star Wars FPS title in 2024, and most recently, cutting around 400 positions an scrapping two more games in the works, including an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe. Anthem joins the long list of failed live-service titles over the past few years, such as Crystal Dynamics' 2020 action-adventure title Marvel's Avengers or PlatinumGames's 2022 RPG, Babylon's Fall , further cementing how blindly adopting the format, either due to greed or to chase industry trends, can and most likely will spell disaster for even the most respected game studios. Sony's 'Helldivers 2' Lands Xbox Release in Aug, With PC and PlayStation Cross-Play
Xbox Series X/S gamers will soon be able to spread managed democracy for the glory of Super Earth, as Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios' cooperative third-person shooter Helldivers 2 is officially heading to Microsoft's console on 26 August this year. Dropping the news from orbit during an announcement stream, the game will also feature full cross-play with both the PS5 and PC, but is also currently available on the Xbox store for pre-order. Its release also marks a rather historic moment, as it will be the first ever Sony-published game on Xbox platforms, highlighting the former's shift in strategy to bring its games to a wider audience. 'We know gamers have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game,' wrote game director Mikael Eriksson in an announcement post on Xbox Wire. 'We have so much more in store for the future months and years – and the more players we have the more stories we can tell! The fight for Super Earth has only just begun.' Xbox players are due to join the fight in the game's overarching Galactic War, a real-time metagame where players work together to complete operations and liberate planets, facing off against the bug-like Terminids, the robotic Automatons, and most recently, taking the fight to Earth itself with the Heart of Democracy major update, defending the planet from mind-controlling xenophobic aliens known as the Illuminate. Having a whole new faction of console players is bound to give the game a healthy boost to its player base, especially important for one that adopts a live-service model. Within the genre, Helldivers 2 does stand out as one of its more successful titles, currently still holding its position in the top 30 titles on Steam's most played games list with a 24-hour peak of 45,745 concurrent players, more than a year after its launch in February last year. Its move to a new console and the inclusion of cross-play will likely increase this number further, as players can finally hop back into the game with their friends on Xbox. Players can airdrop in new reinforcements when Helldivers 2 launches for the Xbox Series X|S on 26 August 2025. 'Back to Black' Marisa Abela Joins Chad Stahelski's 'Highlander' Reboot With Henry Cavill
Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot has added Back to Black star Marisa Abela to its star-studded cast that includes the previously announced Henry Cavill ( Man of Steel, The Witcher ) and Russell Crowe ( The Exorcism , Gladiator ). Photo credit: John Nacion / Getty Images Based on the original Highlander (1986), the new film will be produced by United Artists' (UA) Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, and made for Amazon MGM Studios. 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski's production banner, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, as well as Louise Rosner will also be producing the movie. Michael Finch, who has previously worked on Hitman: Agent 47 (2015) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), will be writing the screenplay. Given that UA has secured the full rights to the 1986 cult classic, there is the potential to develop the new film into a full-blown series, though it remains to be seen whether they will remain true to the source material. Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert in 'Highlander' (1986) The original Highlander (1986) starred Christopher Lambert ( Mortal Kombat , Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ) in the titular role of the Scottish Highlander, Connor MacLeod, with Sean Connery ( James Bond films) starring opposite him as MacLeod's mentor, Juan Ramirez. The epic wove through past and present-day settings as immortal warriors engaged in a timeless battle to be the last man standing and claim the ultimate Prize. Receiving widespread popularity upon release, the film later spawned sequels, a TV series and gained a cult following. While Cavill has been cast to portray MacLeod and Crowe to portray Ramirez, Abela's role has been described as a new character, a fellow immortal and former love of Cavill's MacLeod. Photo credit: PA WIre Abela has had a couple of recent critically acclaimed roles, including her role as Amy Winehouse in the biographical drama Back to Black (2024), that gained her a nomination for a BAFTA EE Rising Star Award, as well as her role in the banking drama Industry (2020-present) that won her a 2025 BAFTA TV Award. She also had a stellar performance in Steven Soderbergh's Black Bag (2025), stealing scenes from the likes of Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. Though Highlander will undoubtedly be Abela's biggest onscreen role yet, with her repertoire of widely lauded roles, Cavill and Crowe may have some competition to be 'the only one' to watch in the upcoming Highlander film.
