England's Carter suffers racist abuse at Euro 2025
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said his organisation "immediately contacted UK police" as soon as it was made aware of the abuse and vowed to ensure "those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice".
The England team said instead of taking a knee to highlight racism, they would remain standing before Tuesday's semi-final against Italy, adding: "It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism."
Writing on her social media accounts, Carter, who has 49 England caps, said: "From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse.
"Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's OK to target someone's appearance or race.
"As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with."
England forward Lauren James suffered online racist abuse after a defeat for her club side Chelsea in 2023.
England men's players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were targeted after the team's Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy.
England boss Sarina Wiegman said: "I stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism."
European football's governing body UEFA expressed its support for Carter while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on X that "there is no place for racism in football or anywhere in society".

Irish budget carrier Ryanair and German rival Eurowings warned late last year that they were considering cutting numerous routes to and from Germany, citing what they called excessive taxation. Reversing the tax rise as part of the 2026 budget is now being discussed between Germany's ruling coalition parties, the conservative CDU/CDU and the centre-left SPD, Bild reported. Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU has tried to forge a pro-business course to revive a sluggish economy, introducing tax breaks for business investment and promising to reduce bureaucracy.

Pogacar 'ready to fight Vingegaard' for Tour de France title
Far from resting on his laurels with a four-minute lead in the standings, defending champion Pogacar insisted his thoughts were on closing out the win in the six days of riding left. On the second rest day in the 21-day, 3,400km slog around France, Pogacar appeared much more mature than the 20-year-old who won the first of his three titles in 2020. "You learn every week, every day on this race that you must stay focused," said the 26-year-old Team UAE rider. "This is my sixth Tour. I miss the white jersey (for the best rider under 26), you know, but yes I've grown up, got more mature," said Pogacar. He said he had also grown into this Tour. Pogacar headed into the Pyrenees last week second only to surprise leader Ben Healy of Ireland. But he grabbed the lead by winning two of the tough, mountainous triptych of stages, emerging 4min 13sec ahead of second-placed Vingegaard, with promising German rider Florian Lipowitz third. "I'm actually enjoying the Tour now," he said. 'Ready for a fight' Asked about whether he planned to take part in the Vuelta a Espana, which begins on August 23, or if he prefered to take a break after his exertions on the Tour, Pogacar said the only thing he was sure about was giving it everything in the final week in France. "The group we have this year, at breakfast, on the bus, it's good. Siraj expects Bumrah to feature for India in fourth Test
Bumrah, the world's top-ranked Test bowler, is only slated to play three of the five matches against England as he battles a back injury.
