Mexican authorities seize more than 3 million liters of stolen fuel
The seizure on Thursday is part of Mexico's ongoing battle against fuel smuggling, which includes both the theft of fuel from state-run oil firm Pemex's pipelines and imports under false classifications to evade taxes.
"Eighteen vehicles, three pieces of machinery, and 3,904 metal-structured containers containing the hydrocarbon, identified as a petroleum derivative, were secured," Mexico's security cabinet said in a joint statement on Thursday.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday the seizures have to do with a recent system of "traceability" of fuel imports from their origin until they reach the point of sale.
State-owned Pemex has for years faced rampant theft of crude and refined products through illegal pipeline taps across Mexico, resulting in massive losses.
Over the past weeks, authorities have discovered 1.5 million liters of fuels in two raids in the state of Tabasco and 10 million liters in the state of Tamaulipas from a ship from the United States that had arrived weeks before in Mexico.

Trump says Coca-Cola will change a major ingredient
Donald Trump has announced Coca-Cola has agreed to start using cane sugar in its American-made drinks, replacing the high fructose corn syrup that has sweetened the beverage for decades. In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Mr Trump wrote: 'I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so.' 'I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola.' 'This will be a very good move by them - You'll see. It's just better!' Coca-Cola did not confirm a change to its formula but a spokesperson said 'we appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm for our iconic Coca‑Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon.' Most Coca-Cola sold outside the US uses cane sugar, including the popular 'Mexican Coke' available in glass bottles. Former prime minister Rishi Sunak described himself as a Coca-Cola addict and has said the Mexican version of the drink is the best. The American version has long relied on corn-based sweeteners, a cheaper alternative introduced widely in the 1980s. Medical experts generally say there is little nutritional difference between cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Famously, Mr Trump's favourite drink is Diet Coke. Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr recalled Dana White, the chief executive of UFC, telling him that he had 'never seen Trump drink a glass of water '. In his first term, Mr Trump, had a red button installed on his Oval Office desk so that he could summon a Diet Coke at a moment's notice. It was later removed by his successor, Joe Biden. In January, Coca-Cola's chief executive presented Mr Trump with a custom-made bottle featuring his name, the date of his inauguration on January 20, and a picture of the White House, a symbolic gesture ahead of his anticipated return to the presidency. The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny of processed food ingredients, particularly under the Trump administration's Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative. Spearheaded by RFK Jr, the campaign has urged major food and beverage manufacturers to eliminate artificial dyes, seed oils, and high fructose corn syrup from their products. As a long-time critic of processed foods, RFK Jr warned about the role of added sugars and artificial ingredients in chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes especially in children. The potential change has sparked backlash from corn industry leaders. 'Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar doesn't make sense,' said Corn Refiners Association President and CEO John Bode. 'Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would cost thousands of American food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and boost imports of foreign sugar, all with no nutritional benefit.' Mr Trump's home state of Florida is the nation's leading producer of sugarcane, while many of the states most reliant on corn production are key political battlegrounds in the Midwest.

Mexico City plans to tackle gentrification after protests against mass tourism
The Mexico City government on Wednesday announced a preliminary plan to deal with gentrification, a week after a fierce protest against rising housing prices some link to mass tourism and an increase in foreigners often called 'digital nomads' who live temporarily in the capital city. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada said the plan will include regulation so that landlords cannot increase rents above inflation. Authorities will also share a list of 'reasonable rental' proposals. Brugada said her government will open a discussion with residents of Mexico's capital about her plan, but that the idea is to work on a bill that includes measures to promote affordable rent. The protest in early July was fueled by government failures and active promotion to attract digital nomads who work remotely often for foreign companies from Mexico City, according to experts. Hundreds of people marched in neighborhoods popular with tourists, but the demonstration turned violent when a small number of people began smashing storefronts and harassing foreigners. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the protest was marked by xenophobia. 'The xenophobic displays seen at that protest have to be condemned. No one should be able to say 'any nationality get out of our country' even over a legitimate problem like gentrification,' Sheinbaum said back then. Many Mexicans have complained about being priced out of their neighborhoods — in part because of a move made by Sheinbaum in 2022, when she was the Mexico City mayor and signed an agreement with Airbnb and UNESCO to boost tourism and attract digital nomads despite concern over the impact short-term rentals could have. During the protest, some people marched with signs reading 'Gringo: Stop stealing our home' and 'Housing regulations now!' Some anti-gentrification groups have called for a new protest this weekend.

Trump is making US Coca-Cola Mexican again: ‘It's just better'
President Donald Trump is attempting to make U.S. Coca-Cola Mexican again by pushing the beverage company to use real cane sugar, saying, 'It's just better.' Trump announced on Truth Social on Wednesday, 'I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so. I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You'll see. It's just better!' Coca-Cola in the U.S. is typically made with high-fructose corn syrup, while the company uses cane sugar in other countries, such as Mexico. In a statement, a Coca-Cola representative said, 'We appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm for our iconic Coca‑Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca‑Cola product range will be shared soon.' It comes as the Trump administration works to 'Make America Healthy Again,' a phrase used by Robert F. Kennedy 's Health and Human Services Department, that alludes to the president's 'Make America Great Again' campaign slogan. Part of the so-called 'Make America Healthy Again' initiative is to end 'America's epidemic of chronic illness by focusing on safe, wholesome food, clean water, and the elimination of environmental toxins,' according to a March press release from HHS. While it's claimed high-fructose corn syrup is more harmful than other sugars, a Healthline article last updated in December 2023 said high-fructose corn syrup and regular table sugar have similar effects on a person's health, and both are harmful when consumed excessively. Trump is known for his affinity for Diet Coke, which is made with the artificial sweetener aspartame. In January, Coca-Cola presented Trump with a commemorative Diet Coke bottle. In reaction to Trump's Coca-Cola announcement, California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has sparred with Trump most recently over his crackdown on Los Angeles protesters against immigration raids, wrote on X Wednesday, 'Oh thank god! I've totally forgotten about the Epstein files now!' Newsom was referring to documents related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that the Trump administration vowed to release. Earlier this month, the feds changed their tune, saying there was no suspected client list of powerful people who had partaken in Epstein's crimes. Not only may your soda taste different soon but your ice cream may as well. Kennedy intends for the Food and Drug Administration to phase out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes in the nation's food supply. As a result, a group of 40 ice cream producers, including Turkey Hill and Schwoeppe Dairy, have pledged to remove Red No. 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 by the end of 2027, according to the International Dairy Foods Association. The group accounts for more than 90 percent of the ice cream sold in the U.S.
