Msunduzi municipality launches investigation into why fan park was cancelled, apologises to residents
'We understand the expectations placed on us, and we commit that such a situation will never happen again. We are taking immediate steps to improve our planning, communication, and co-ordination for future events.
'Msunduzi remains committed to building a vibrant, inclusive city where all residents can enjoy major cultural and sporting experiences. We thank the public for their patience and understanding, and we ask for your continued support as we work to rebuild your trust,' said Ngcobo.
However, the KwaZulu-Natal capital city's residents were not ready to accept the apology. Sandile Tshezi said: ''This unfortunate event does not reflect the mayor's values nor his long-standing record of delivering inclusive and people-centred programmes'. That is not true. What happened is a true reflection of his incompetence, self-centred and heartless character, who doesn't care and has no interests of PMB citizens who pay his salary at heart.'
Msunduzi Association of Residents, Ratepayers and Civics spokesperson Anthony Waldhausen said almost every event hosted by the municipality was cancelled.
'The interview at the radio station was postponed, the IDP and budget consultations postponed, cancellation of public viewing event. This just shows the dysfunctionality of the municipality.
'Local government is the coalface of development and service delivery but it's non-existent at Msunduzi Municipality. We have poor leadership and incompetence at the municipality. It's so sad and disheartening at what's happening with our city.'

US legislators advance bill that could sanction SA over its foreign policy
US legislators have voted to advance a bill that proposes reviewing the US relationship with South Africa due to objections over its foreign policy and potentially imposing sanctions on South African officials. The US House foreign affairs committee voted 34-16 on Tuesday to send the US-South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act to the full House of Representatives, where it could be subject to a vote, according to a video of the proceedings. The measure would need to pass the House and the Senate before it could be signed into law. Many bills at this stage never go to a vote. However, the committee's approval took the bill a step further and underscored tensions between Washington and Pretoria as South Africa seeks to fend off a looming 30% US tariff and counter false claims of white 'genocide' made by President Donald Trump. South Africa's foreign ministry and a spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa declined to comment. The bill was introduced in April by Ronny Jackson, a Republican congressman from Texas who cheered the move on X, writing: 'South Africa made its choice when they abandoned America and our allies and sided with communists and terrorists.' The bill accuses South Africa of undermining US interests by maintaining close relationships with Russia and China, which are among its allies and trading partners. It also accuses South Africa of backing Palestinian militant group Hamas that is at war in Gaza with Israel, which South Africa has denied. South Africa has long been a supporter of the Palestinian cause and filed a case accusing Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice in 2023, which is mentioned in the bill as one of its concerns. The bill proposes 'a full review of the bilateral relationship' and to 'identify South African government officials and ANC leaders eligible for the imposition of sanctions'. It says these would be people determined by Trump to have engaged in corruption or human rights abuses. No individuals are named. South Africa's relationship with the US has sharply deteriorated during Trump's second term, during which he has accused the government of anti-white racism and started a refugee programme for Afrikaners. Magistrate absent since 2019: committee urges pay suspension
Parliament's select committee on security and justice has recommended that the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) confirm the provisional suspension of a magistrate who has been absent from duty since 2019, but continued to receive full remuneration. The committee on Wednesday also recommended that the NCOP endorse the determination to withhold the remuneration of Ms SS Fredericks, the additional magistrate at Booysens magistrate's court in Johannesburg. Committee chairperson Jane Seboletswe Mananiso said the recommendation to withhold her remuneration was in terms of the Magistrates Act. She said the committee's recommendation followed its consideration of the minister of justice and constitutional development's report, tabled in parliament on July 1. The report, dated June 26, was based on advice from the Magistrates Commission after an extended period of unauthorised absence by Fredericks since November 2019, during which she continued to receive full remuneration. The committee previously heard that the matter was brought to the commission's attention in April 2024, when the secretary of the commission learnt of Fredericks' prolonged absence during a departmental leave management meeting. Subsequent investigations confirmed her continued absence from her duties at the Booysens magistrate's court, with no official permission or satisfactory explanation provided. After a series of internal processes — including attempts to engage Fredericks, legal consultations and correspondence with the department of social development — the commission resolved in June this year to recommend a disciplinary hearing and to advise the minister that provisional suspension and the withholding of remuneration were warranted. Mananiso said the committee found Fredricks' absence had adversely affected the functioning of the court and the administration of justice. Despite being offered the opportunity to respond, Fredericks had failed to make any representations to the commission. All reasonable avenues to resolve the matter were exhausted before a recommendation was made. 'Having considered the minister's report concerning the provisional suspension from office of Ms Fredericks, pending the outcome of a hearing into her fitness to hold office as a magistrate, the committee recommends that the NCOP confirm the provisional suspension of Ms Fredericks. 'The committee further recommends that the NCOP resolves to confirm the determination to withhold Ms Fredericks remuneration pending the outcome of the hearing into her fitness to hold office as a magistrate,' Mananiso said.
