"He went to the mosque" - Hakeem Olajuwon didn't celebrate with the Rockets after their first NBA championship

Hakeem Olajuwon reached the pinnacle of success in his illustrious NBA career when he led the Houston Rockets to their first NBA championship in 1994. This landmark victory marked a significant milestone in the franchise's history, and "Dream" was rightfully named the Finals MVP for his outstanding performance throughout the series.
While the Rockets had every reason to revel in their momentous achievement, Olajuwon made a surprising choice. Rather than joining his teammates in celebration, the legendary center chose to visit a mosque. There, Hakeem took the time to pray and express his heartfelt gratitude for the extraordinary accomplishment.

"One of the most moving stories was that after he won that first championship," Mirin Fader, author of 'Dream: The Life and Legacy of Hakeem Olajuwon,' told Awful Announcing last year. "Instead of going out and celebrating with the rest of his teammates and drinking champagne, he cannot do that because it's against (his religion). He's prohibited to have alcohol. He went to the mosque."
"I spoke with a person who was there that night who saw him after winning the championship, and he just could not believe that Hakeem was there," she continued. "I thought that was so beautiful that your celebration is going back and praying and giving gratitude."
Hakeem has his own mosque
Olajuwon is not only celebrated as one of the greatest players in NBA history, but he is also widely recognized for his deep commitment to his faith as a devoted Muslim. By diligently following the teachings of Islam, "Dream" learned invaluable lessons about humility and the significance of living a life grounded in religious principles.

One of the most remarkable demonstrations of Hakeem's uncompromising faith is the mosque he built, which stands as a testament to his devotion to Islam. It reflects his belief that spirituality and faith will always be on top of everything else in his life.
"He is extremely private," Fader further said of the Nigerian big man. "There's a reason why nothing has been done on him. He is dedicated to his religion, and because of those things, he has purposefully not wanted to do anything in the spotlight. I met him in the home of one of his friends. Essentially, Hakeem ended up not wanting to speak for himself but helped me get to people close to him. I got to go to Hakeem's mosque. He has a mosque downtown in Houston."
The game never got in the way of Dream's faith
Unlike other NBA superstars, Olajuwon never succumbed to temptations and other bad vices. He proved that no amount of personal success could ever affect his religious beliefs, not even NBA titles and MVP awards.

Today, the two-time champion is revered for his remarkable skills as a player, as a beacon of true humility and a man of faith. His legacy serves as a reminder that greatness is measured not only by accolades but also by the strength of one's character and beliefs.
Through his actions and values, Olajuwon exemplifies how one can integrate one's faith into one's everyday life, serving as an inspiring role model for many.

Lakers have revealed their 2025-26 City Edition jerseys

The Los Angeles Lakers have one of the most iconic uniform designs in all of sports. The design has seen some tweaks over the years, but it has largely remained the same, generally speaking, for over 50 years. Every team has four uniforms it can wear, which include the City Edition uniforms. The Lakers' City Edition uniforms for the 2024-25 season weren't well regarded, and they played so poorly in them that they stopped wearing them around midseason. This coming season, the Lakers will be recycling their City Edition uniforms from the 2023-24 campaign, per the team's official X (formerly Twitter) account. When this design was first unveiled two years ago, plenty thought it was at least somewhat uninspired and even boring. The fact that the team is simply using it again instead of coming up with a new one has led to fans expressing their disappointment. On a brighter note, the Lakers' Statement Edition uniforms have been improved. The black stripe down the sides that they had has been removed, and the team's wordmark and the player numbers are now in white with gold trim. Now, if only L.A.'s Icon Edition uniforms would go with gold instead of yellow as their primary color, the team's fans would likely be happy enough with its on-court threads. Lakers jersey history No. 2 — Rory Sparrow

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. Here, we take a look at Rory Sparrow, who played for the Lakers in the early 1990s. Sparrow was a fourth-round draft pick by the New Jersey Nets out of Villanova University back in 1980. A 6-foot-2 guard, he didn't score a lot of points, but he was known as a reliable ball-handling backcourt player. He played for a number of teams in his first 11 seasons, including the Nets and New York Knicks. He started the 1991-92 campaign with the Chicago Bulls, but they waived him in late November, paving the way for the Lakers to sign him for the rest of the season. In 42 games with Los Angeles, he averaged 3.0 points and 1.9 assists in 11.2 minutes a game while shooting 39.9% from the field. It was the team's first season without Magic Johnson, and with an aging roster that lacked Johnson, not to mention the "it" factor he brought, L.A. lost in the first round of the NBA playoffs to the Portland Trail Blazers. Following that playoff defeat, Sparrow retired from the NBA. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Lakers jersey history No. 2 — Rory Sparrow

Social media reacts to Nets signing Ricky Council IV to one-year deal

The Brooklyn Nets have had one of the more interesting offseasons with the way that they approached the 2025 NBA Draft and free-agency as a whole. Brooklyn not only used five first-round picks in the Draft, but they also traded forward Cam Johnson to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for forward Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick. On Friday, the Nets continued making tweaks to the roster by signing former Philadelphia 76ers forward Ricky Council IV to a one-year contract, per ESPN's Shams Charania. Council, 23, is coming off a 2024-25 season with the 76ers in which he averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 38.2% from the field and 25.8% from three-point land. With Council being added to the roster, most likely to compete for a spot in training camp, the Nets will be at 19 players on the team, including forward Ziaire Williams and center Day'Ron Sharpe, whose re-signings are still pending, per Spotrac. As of this writing, Brooklyn has not re-signed guard Cam Thomas, meaning that the roster could be at 20 players soon enough.
