Fever's Sophie Cunningham clarifies controversial WNBA expansion take

Yahoo19 hours ago
After creating some controversy with her recent remarks on the WNBA's planned expansion to Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia over the coming years, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham provided some clarity on her comments.
"First of all, I know the history behind the WBA. I know that both of those cities have had teams before, and what they got us, and I'm thankful for that," Cunningham expressed.

"All I was really getting at is, like, Broadway [Nashville], the off-court lifestyle, and so I think that is really intriguing. I think Miami's intriguing. That's all I was getting at. I'm thankful for what they've done for the history of the sport. I think it'd be fun to kind of get some teams outside the NBA market. I do think there is a benefit when you do have an NBA team, but that's all I was getting at.
"I think people totally misread that situation. I would never speak down upon middle-class, blue-collar working people. That's where I come from. I'm from Missouri. I get I'm in Indiana, and that's kind of why I'm hinting that, Broadway sounds fun, SoFi in Miami sounds fun. All I was getting at."
Cunningham and the Fever (9-8) return to action on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. CT with a date against the Los Angeles Sparks on NBA TV.

Tigers Make Gleyber Torres Announcement After Leaving Guardians Game

Tigers Make Gleyber Torres Announcement After Leaving Guardians Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres went from a New York Yankees reject to one of the most important players on the AL's best team. Advertisement The Yankees let the 5-foot-11-inch, 205-pounder walk this past offseason after he slashed .257/.330/.378 with 15 homers and 63 RBI over 154 regular-season games in 2024. He also slashed .241/.348/.397 with two homers and eight RBI over 14 playoff contests. Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract with Detroit in December 2024, and he entered Saturday's bout with the Cleveland Guardians leading the team with a .385 OBP. However, the veteran suffered a setback during a scary play in the first inning. The 28-year-old posted a message thanking the fans on his social media on Thursday. "I want to express my gratitude for all the support you have given me during the season," he said. "I've never felt that support more strongly than now after the starting position players have been announced for the 2025 All-Star Game. I'm so proud to have been voted the starting second baseman for the American League All-Star team by you, the fans." The Tigers entered Saturday's game with a 1.5-game lead over the Houston Astros for the AL's best record, and one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top record in baseball. Stephanie White Reveals 'Biggest Thing' Holding Caitlin Clark Back From Injury Return

Stephanie White Reveals 'Biggest Thing' Holding Caitlin Clark Back From Injury Return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever will be shorthanded again on Saturday when they host the Los Angeles Sparks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This is after the team ruled Catilin Clark out for a fifth consecutive game due to a lingering groin injury. Advertisement Indiana head coach Stephanie White spoke to reporters after Friday's practice, and the veteran shot-caller provided a significant update on the newly crowned WNBA All-Star Game captain's status. White revealed the one main thing that is holding Clark back from returning from injury. "We went through semi-live shooting drills," White said, via Fever reporter Tony East on X. "... (She) still hasn't gone full speed in a practice or a live defensive group. But she's been getting some 3-on-3 work on her own. "I think the biggest thing is she's stated she's not a fan of minutes restrictions. If there's going to be a minutes restriction, maybe we'll hold her another game." Advertisement Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) reacts during a game. Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images According to White, Clark herself does not want to be on a minutes restriction when she returns. This only means that the Fever will very likely hold her back until she's back at full strength. White added that at this point, the main concern for Indiana is Clark's "long-term health," and that the plan is not to bring her back unless she's "a hundred percent" healthy. This update does not sound very optimistic in terms of Clark's potential return in the immediate future. After Saturday's game, the Fever will return to action on Wednesday against the Golden State Valkyries, and the reigning Rookie of the Year's status currently remains up in the air for that one. Advertisement The good news for Indiana is that they have been winning even without their best player on the court. This team is in the midst of a three-game winning streak, including their Commissioner's Cup championship win against the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday, and the Fever will be looking to keep their foot on the gas against Los Angeles on Saturday. Lexie Hull Steals the Show With Her Outfit for Fever-Sparks

Lexie Hull Steals the Show With Her Outfit for Fever-Sparks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Caitlin Clark is out again on Sunday as the Indiana Fever host the Los Angeles Sparks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year will sit out for a fifth straight contest due to a lingering groin injury, which only means that the rest of her teammates will need to step it up in her stead yet again. Advertisement Fever guard Lexie Hull has been one of the players asked to carry a heavier load for the team with Clark sidelined. The 25-year-old has been a central figure for Indiana, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, and more of the same will be expected from her against L.A. Hull came into Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday well-prepared. This included a stunning pregame outfit that grabbed the attention of fans on social media. View the original article to see embedded media. Hull wore a white sleeveless cropped top that featured a high neckline. She paired it with a high-waisted off-white skirt that had accordion-style pleats. The former Stanford star completed her look with strappy black heels and a matching dark woven clutch bag. Advertisement Supporters on social media were quick to take notice of Hull's ensemble. "Lex fits don't miss," a comment on Instagram read. "LEXIE 🔥🔥🔥" said another. "Gorgeous @lexiehulll" a user posted. Indiana Fever guard Lexie Hull (10) looks on during a game.© Jerome Miron-Imagn Images "Lexie!🔥" a reaction read. "Lexie's abs are crazy," noticed a supporter. "Lex is smoldering 🔥😍 🥵" another said. Hull is no superstar, but there's no denying that she has been a key piece for the Fever, not only throughout Clark's absence but for the entire campaign as well. In 17 games played this season, she's put up averages of 8.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals, while also knocking down 1.4 triples on a highly efficient 48.9% clip.
