‘Incumbents make the best candidates': SUPP to defend seats, help new faces build stronger team
The Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government and Pelawan assemblyman expressed confidence in the performance and track record of current representatives.
'We're going to field incumbents (in the coming Sarawak election). I believe incumbents make the best candidates because they have already participated in elections and have proven track records.
'Not only are we going to field our incumbents, but we also want our incumbents to help those new and fresh candidates in our (SUPP) constituencies.
'This will help us build a larger and stronger team to serve Sarawak,' Tiang told reporters, when met prior to the distribution of rice dumplings to senior citizens at Jalan Bunga Teratai here today.
The event was organised by SUPP Pelawan Youth section, distributing over 500 packs of dumplings in conjunction with the Dragon Boat Festival today.
On the timing of the next state polls, Tiang said he does not foresee the state election being called this year.
'At the moment, I have not sensed any 'breeze' about the Sarawak election. Primarily, I think people are focusing on Sabah (election) first, followed by Johor and Melaka. After that, I believe you'll start feeling some 'winds' about the Sarawak Election.'
'And if you ask me whether Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready, or if SUPP is ready – we're always ready, because GPS under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has been working very hard.
'Every year, we have been working to find more revenue streams for Sarawak, so that we can make Sarawak financially independent. Our people can enjoy the fruits of our autonomy over natural resources.'
On this, he cited the example of the joint declaration between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), which clearly affirmed Sarawak's regulatory control over her own natural gas.
'Elections are simply a time for the people to assess us. But we are always working hard to serve Sarawak, in line with the promises outlined in our manifesto,' Tiang concluded.

Datuk remanded over suspected RM75m money laundering linked to fibre network project
PUTRAJAYA, July 3 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained an order to remand a company director with the title 'Datuk' for investigation into alleged involvement in money laundering activities amounting to about RM75 million involving a fibre network development project. The four-day remand order until July 6 against the suspect, who is in his 50s, was issued by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin at the Magistrate's Court here today. According to a MACC source, the man is believed to have committed the offence in 2012 for approval of a loan financing amounting to RM400 million. 'Initial investigations found that RM75 million was channelled to a company owned by the suspect. He was arrested at about 4 pm yesterday at the MACC Headquarters,' he said. The source said the arrest was a follow-up to Op Fibre conducted by the MACC Special Operations Division (BOK) on June 30. 'BOK raided four different locations, including the suspect's residence and office in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. 'Through the operation conducted, MACC froze 12 bank accounts, including personal and company accounts, with a total value of about RM400,000,' he said. I no longer have to carry this burden, says Tengku Maimun
Former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat reached the mandatory retirement age of 66 yesterday, with Tuesday being her last day in office. KUALA LUMPUR : Former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat says it is now up to the government, and her successor, to carry on the duty of upholding judicial independence. Tengku Maimun – who became the first woman to helm the judiciary when she was appointed chief justice in 2019 – reached the mandatory retirement age of 66 yesterday, with Tuesday being her last day in office. Speaking at the launch of her book today, Tengku Maimun said she and her former colleagues had worked tirelessly to uplift the judiciary's image over the past six years. 'I no longer have to carry this burden,' she said. 'I still find it hard to fathom that I spent six years of my life as chief justice, and that I am now retired from a lifetime of service.' Her book, Beyond The Gavel, consists of some of her written judgments from the High Court until Federal Court, as well as some of her speeches. She also thanked her peers – consisting of lawyers and judges – who contributed to the book. Tengku Maimun's retirement was followed by that of Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, whose judicial tenure ended yesterday. Both vacated their office on the eve of their 66th birthday. Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim, currently the highest ranked judge in the judiciary, is now the acting chief justice. Hasnah, whose office ranks third in the judicial hierarchy, created history today by occupying the top three positions in the judiciary simultaneously. Hasnah herself reached the mandatory retirement age on May 13, but she secured a six-month extension which allowed her to remain in office until Nov 14.
