The Citizen06-06-2025
One of the oldest running automakers still in existence today, Alfa Romeo will celebrate 115 years of existence on June 24. Founded in Milan in 1910, Alfa Romeo has been instrumental in automotive innovation and motorsport glory, which in the modern era has translated into products that are meant to excite the senses and stir emotion. To honour this rich heritage, the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese will host a spectacular celebration on June 22, bringing together fans and club members from around the world for a day immersed in la meccanica delle emozioni (the mechanics of emotion).

The full day event will kick off at 10:00 with a Regularity Course for vintage Alfa Romeos. This will be followed by a Club Meeting at 11:00. Further on in the day, 115 Alfa Romeos from across decades and continents will form the characters AR115 on the internal track. Towards the end of the day, guests will be taken on a special Backstage conference that will explore Alfa's 115-year history, including the milestones that fall in 2025. One of the final pieces on the itinerary includes a parade led by Tributo GTA cars, honouring the 60th anniversary of the Giulia Sprint GTA, one of the most beloved icons in Alfa's racing legacy. The day will conclude with a toast on the museum's track, a communal moment of celebration for a brand that has thrilled drivers for more than a century.

While the 115th anniversary is the headline, 2025 is packed with landmark anniversaries for Alfa Romeo. This year marks 100 years since the Tipo P2 claimed victory in the first-ever Grand Prix World Championship in 1925, establishing Alfa Romeo at the pinnacle of international motorsport. It's also been 75 years since the unveiling of the 1900, Alfa's first mass-produced model and a cornerstone of post-war Italian automotive resurgence, and 70 years since the debut of the Giulietta Berlina, the model that brought Alfa's elegance and sportiness to everyday life. 2025 also marks 60 years since the birth of the Giulia Sprint GTA. It's also 50 years since the 33 TT 12 won the World Championship for Makes, and 40 years since the introduction of the Alfa 75, the final production Alfa built on the famed Alfetta platform.
Another momentous occasion for 2025 will be the introduction of Alfa Romeo's first all-electric model in South Africa. Dubbed the Junior, the platform can host multiple powertrain options, including hybrid and all-wheel drive derivatives and will slot in locally alongside the Tonale, Giulia and Stelvio. Pricing and specification are yet to be revealed and can be expected closer to its local launch.

Chinese brand GWM teases Ferrari-rivalling supercar

A Chinese supercar to rival established brands such as Ferrari? Indeed, a high-performance GWM is on its way, with the Baoding automaker teasing its upcoming halo model on its 35th anniversary. While the name that will adorn this GWM remains unconfirmed at this point in time, the company is looking to put their name on the supercar map with this new derivative. Teased by the brand on a Chinese social media platform, the mystery machine could only be 'seen' underneath a cover. Though, despite very little information being revealed to the public, the car is expected to be powered by the firm's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, which was unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. The automaker's supercar project was confirmed in April by chief technology officer Wu Huixiao, who highlighted that the vehicle had been under development for five years, as it must not only deliver exceptional performance, but also remain reasonably attainable as far as supercars go. In addition to the expected PHEV arrangement – the internal combustion (ICE) component of which is sited midships – that will power the firm's halo car, it will feature a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. Power and torque outputs, and performance figures remain unconfirmed, though Huixiao says the company's first supercar will outperform the Ferrari SF90. As a reminder, the Italian supercar's PHEV setup produces a total system output of 735kW for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 2.5s and top speed of 340km/h. GWM hasn't announced an official debut date for its supercar yet. However, it is speculated that it will be unveiled before the end of 2025. Watch: Oops! Super rare Porsche 911-based RUF falls off car carrier

In what can only be described as a major 'oops', an extremely rare Porsche 911-based RUF fell off a car carrier when delivered back to its owner in San Francisco, California, following its return from RUF's headquarters in Germany, where it was freshly painted in black. So, how exactly did this accident happen? Well, this RUF Yellowbird's rear wheels weren't correctly fixed to the transporter. So, upon delivery, it rolled off the 2.4m-tall ramp and hit the ground. According to footage circulating online (watch the footage shared by Spike Feresten on Instagram below), only the rear bumper and exhaust touched the ground. However, the car was wedged between the ramp and the ground. John Clay Wolf wrote on Instagram: 'Sitting with a friend when he gets the call that his customer's RUF Yellowbird fell off the trailer. The guy had just sent the car back to Germany to have it painted black. It makes it all the way home to SF [San Francisco], then the driver forgets to block the tires – and this happens.' Based on the 993-generation Porsche 911, the CTR Yellowbird is one of the rarest models ever built by RUF – the car you see here being one of only 29 sold. As such, it's an extremely sought-after collector's car. In 2025, one example sold for $6m – a whopping R107m at the current exchange rate – under the gavel. The RUF CTR Yellowbird was the world's fastest production car when it was introduced in the late 1980s, with its 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine's 345kW peak power output allowing it to reach a top speed of 343km/h. A 1998 CTR 2 Sport is now heading to Broad Arrow Auctions' 2025 Monterey auction event, and is expected to fetch between R55.5m and R64.75m. Subaru unveils new front-wheel-drive Toyota-based Uncharted EV

Subaru has whipped the wraps off the Uncharted, a Toyota-based all-electric crossover, which will initially be available in front-wheel drive. The Subaru Uncharted shares its e-TNGA platform with the new Toyota CH-R+, but receives Subaru-specific styling and chassis tuning to set it apart from the crossover/SUV it is based on. Significantly, the Uncharted debuts as Subaru's only front-wheel-drive model, with all-wheel-drive variants set to be introduced at a later stage. The FWD-equipped Premium model features a single electric motor that generates 164kW. The AWD GT and Sport variants will produce 544kW from a dual electric-motor setup. Subaru claims the more powerful variants are capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in less than five seconds. All trims utilise a 74.7kWh battery pack, which supports 150kW DC fast charging. Plugged into the latter facility, Subaru says the battery is capable of recharging from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes. An 11kW AC onboard charger that can be used to charge at home is also present. The single- and twin electric-motor models offer 480km and 466km of all-electric operating range, respectively, the company says. Inside, the Uncharted plays host to a 14-inch, touch-enabled infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and dedicated USB-C ports for rear passengers. Standard safety features include the firm's EyeSight driver assistance technology, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance alert, and a driver-monitoring system. Sport and GT trims receive X‑Mode, a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view camera array, and distinct upholstery options.
