Publix Commits to Multiyear Project for Coral Reef Restoration
"At Publix, we remain committed to supporting efforts that aid in protecting, conserving and restoring coral reefs around Florida," said Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous. The company's donation will continue to support various coral reef restoration projects, including
transplanting nursery-grown corals
restoring storm-damaged corals
treating corals affected by diseases
completing coral rescues in response to marine heat waves and mass bleaching events
removing invasive species to maintain a healthy reef fish population
providing in-water protection for corals
growing larvae of protected coral species and
restoring reef habitat through the removal of submerged marine debris.
Biscayne National Park
America's largest marine park, Biscayne National Park, can be found south of Miami, and a large portion of the Florida Reef Tract is located within the park's boundaries. In recent years, the area has been affected by heat waves, hurricanes and the ongoing outbreak of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease, a highly lethal disease that affects coral and can spread quickly between reefs.
Dry Tortugas National Park
Dry Tortugas National Park is a 100-square-mile park 70 miles west of Key West, Florida, and includes seven islands. This remote park is home to a variety of unique coral reefs and marine life and is only accessible by boat or seaplane. In fact, only 1% of Dry Tortugas National Park is dry ground. In recent years, Dry Tortugas National Park has been affected by Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease.

Blue Origin and five other companies study how orbital transfer vehicles can aid NASA

The awards will support nine studies in all, with a maximum total value of about $1.4 million, NASA said today. 'With the increasing maturity of commercial space delivery capabilities, we're asking companies to demonstrate how they can meet NASA's need for multi-spacecraft and multi-orbit delivery to difficult-to-reach orbits beyond current launch service offerings,' Joe Dant, orbital transfer vehicle strategic initiative owner for the Launch Services Program at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, said in a news release. 'This will increase unique science capability and lower the agency's overall mission costs.' Blue Origin will conduct two studies — one that focuses on potential NASA applications for its Blue Ring multi-mission space mobility platform, and another that focuses on how the upper stage of its New Glenn rocket could be used. The first New Glenn launch sent a test payload for the Blue Ring program into orbit in January. The second New Glenn launch is due to put twin orbiters on a path to Mars for NASA's ESCAPADE mission later this year. Blue Origin's first full-scale Blue Ring spacecraft is currently scheduled for launch in 2026, with Scout Space's Owl space domain sensors among the payloads. Miami-Dade mayor pushes back on Florida DOGE review, calls it "staged political theater"
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava responded to the Florida Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) plan to scrutinize the county's finances, framing the review as politically motivated and unnecessary. "We are aware that Governor DeSantis's Florida Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has initiated a review of Miami-Dade County's finances," Levine Cava said in a statement. "Since I took office as mayor, I've governed with strong fiscal accountability and ensured Miami-Dade operates under one of the most transparent and well-governed local systems in the nation." DOGE's review is part of a broader initiative examining financial operations in counties across the state, including Broward. In Miami-Dade, the agency has requested documents related to spending on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and environmental programs targeting greenhouse gas reduction. Levine Cava defended her administration's record, citing years of clean external audits, open budgeting processes and real-time public access to financial data. "Our county has undergone regular external audits, with findings made public and easily accessible to residents," she said. "We offer the public real-time financial information through the online checkbook portal." The mayor also pointed to cost-saving measures already enacted and a reduction in the county tax rate to the lowest combined level since 1982. "We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency and accountability," Levine Cava stated. "Miami-Dade stands ready to cooperate—but to the extent that the review adds value without disrupting local governance. Gonzalez has pointed to missing line-item expenses and raised concerns about potential misuse of funds within departments. The mayor's proposed budget includes cuts to charitable grants, senior services and food pantry funding, along with a proposed increase in transit fares—all of which were expected to be discussed at a public hearing Monday night.
