Tycoon who brought F1 to Singapore pleads guilty in graft case
Singapore-based billionaire Ong Beng Seng was charged in October last year with helping former transport minister S. Iswaran cover up evidence in a graft investigation. 04 Aug 2025 04:12pm Malaysian hotel tycoon Ong Beng Seng (L) leaves the State Court in Singapore on August 4, 2025. (Photo by Roslan RAHMAN / AFP) SINGAPORE - A Malaysian hotel tycoon who helped bring Formula One to Singapore pleaded guilty Monday to abetting the obstruction of justice, in a rare corruption case in the city-state that saw a former transport minister jailed last year. Singapore-based billionaire Ong Beng Seng, 79, was charged in October last year with helping former transport minister S. Iswaran cover up evidence in a graft investigation. He was also accused of showering Iswaran with lavish gifts including tickets to the 2017 Singapore Formula One Grand Prix, flights on a private jet, business class travel, and a luxury hotel stay while Iswaran was working in his official capacity. Ong entered his guilty plea from a glass-encased dock at a district court in downtown Singapore on Monday. Prosecutors sought a two-month jail term after Ong agreed to plead guilty. He will be sentenced on August 15. But prosecutors also agreed with defence lawyers that the court could show "judicial mercy" -- which could further reduce any sentence. Defence lawyers pleaded for clemency, saying their septuagenarian client suffered from a litany of serious ailments, including an incurable form of cancer. They asked for a "stiff fine" instead of actual jail time. "The risks to Mr Ong's life increase dramatically in prison," lawyer Cavinder Bull told the court, saying prison could not give his client sufficient care. "This man is living on the edge," Bull added. The trial of Malaysia-born Ong had attracted significant media attention due to his links with Iswaran and the affluent city-state's reputation as one of the world's least corrupt nations. Ong owns Singapore-based Hotel Properties Limited and is the rights holder to the Singapore Grand Prix Formula One race. He and Iswaran were instrumental in bringing the Formula One night race on a street circuit to Singapore in 2008. In July 2023, Ong was arrested as part of a graft probe involving Iswaran and was subsequently released on bail. In October last year, Iswaran was jailed for 12 months after he pleaded guilty to accepting illegal gifts worth more than Sg$400,000 ($310,000). He was also found guilty of obstructing justice, in the city-state's first political graft trial in nearly half a century. Iswaran completed serving his sentence on June 6. - AFP More Like This

Halim reclaims MTUC presidency in fresh election
Halim Mansor, who first became MTUC president in 2016, narrowly defeated Effendy Abdul Ghani by seven votes at a special delegates conference held over the weekend. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The six-year leadership crisis at the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), which led to legal disputes and intervention by the Registrar of Societies, has been resolved with the re-election of Halim Mansor as president. Halim, who first became president in 2016, narrowly defeated Effendy Abdul Ghani by seven votes at a special delegates conference held over the weekend, which was ordered by the Shah Alam High Court. Effendy was elected as president in the 2022 triennial election, which was later declared null and void by the High Court. Halim said the long-running dispute had weakened the labour centre, resulting in MTUC losing its representation on statutory boards such as the EPF and the Social Security Organisation or Perkeso for the past six years. 'Now that the matter has finally been resolved through the court's intervention and a legitimate election has been held, I will ensure that MTUC regains its rightful place in these statutory bodies to protect workers' rights,' he told FMT. 'Enough is enough – the split in MTUC must be repaired. Thankfully, the election saw members from both factions elected into office, which bodes well for the organisation's future unity.' Halim said human resources minister Steven Sim called him immediately after the election to congratulate him and assured him that the ministry would cooperate with the new leadership to address pressing labour issues. He also thanked the minister and former MTUC secretary-general J Solomon, who was appointed by the court to lead the special joint committee overseeing the fresh election. Halim praised Solomon for implementing the court order impartially. Among the key office-bearers elected were Mohamed Dauzkaply as deputy president, Kamarul Baharin Mansor as secretary-general, and Bindu Patel as financial secretary. In the 2019 election, Halim was tied with another presidential candidate, but the then secretary-general and working committee failed to resolve the impasse and sidelined Halim. The committee later disqualified him from contesting the 2022 election, claiming that he was ineligible. This led Halim to file a lawsuit, and a year later, the Shah Alam High Court declared the 2022 election null and void, ruling that the actions taken were ultra vires the MTUC constitution. The court granted a conditional stay of execution, allowing MTUC officials to handle only daily operations and barring them from making policy decisions, public statements, or representing MTUC in official capacities. In February, the Court of Appeal heard a challenge by the then MTUC president against secretary-general Kamarul, with both of their 2022 elections being nullified. All parties eventually reached a mutual agreement to form a joint special committee to run MTUC and hold a fresh election within 90 days.

China, Hong Kong stocks rebound after steep weekly loss
The small gains today came after markets booked their steepest losses since April last week. (EPA Images pic) HONG KONG : Chinese and Hong Kong stocks inched higher today, recovering from last week's sharp declines, as defense and banking stocks led gains. By the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.2% at 3,567.02 points, recovering from losses in the opening hour. The blue-chip CSI300 index was barely changed. The defence sector led the onshore market higher with a 2.2% gain. The banking sector added 1% and semiconductors gained 0.4%. The small gains today came after markets booked their steepest losses since April last week. The bullish trend for Chinese equities has started to show signs of slowing as the much anticipated Politburo meeting and tariff negotiations with the US both failed to deliver positive surprises. 'Market sentiment is becoming more volatile as positive catalysts are losing momentum,' Citic Securities said in a note, adding that investors might shift focus to defensive sectors and those more insulated from external shocks. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index was up 0.5% at 24,627.25, also recovering from last week's loss. The tech sector jumped 0.9% and AI-related shares added 1%, leading markets higher. Looking ahead, markets are awaiting new developments on the trade truce between China and the US that expires on Aug 12. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday that Washington has the makings of a deal and was 'optimistic' about the path forward. China's trade data and CPI readings later this week will also give investors more clues about the health of the world's second-largest economy. 'Given rising uncertainties in the foreign market, especially in the US where Trump's intervention of economic reporting undermines the efficacy of policies, both on- and off-shore Chinese markets will likely be under pressure in the near term,' Hong Hao, CIO at Lotus Asset Management, said in a note.
