Nominee: Gustavo Oliveira def. Anas Azizoun at 2025 PFL Europe 2
Gustavo Oliveira put his name on the map with PFL courtesy of a knockout for the ages.
Oliveira (11-2) created a highlight moment that will forever be replayed throughout his career. Oliveira smashed Anas Azizoun with a spinning back elbow out of nowhere at 3:25 of Round 1 of the bantamweight bout. Azizoun (5-2) went out immediately and crashed to the canvas.
Nominee: Islam Dulatov def. Adam Fugitt at UFC 318
German fighter-turned-YouTube star Islam Dulatov finally made his promotional debut and did not disappoint against Adam Fugitt.
Dulatov (12-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) connected with a check left hook that floored Fugitt (10-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) before he finished him off with follow-up punches. The stoppage came at the 4:06 mark of Round 1 of their welterweight bout.
Nominee: Bogdan Guskov def. Nikita Krylov at UFC on ABC 9
Bogdan Guskov continued his rise in the light heavyweight division when be blasted through divisional mainstay Nikita Krylov inside the opening round.
The opening minutes were measured as both men relied on their technique as their guide. However, a slow leg kick from Krylov (30-11 MMA, 11-9 UFC) was his undoing. Guskov (18-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) countered beautifully with a massive punch that sat Krylov down. Follow-up punches bounced Krylov's head off the canvas.
Nominee: Loai Abushaar def. Edmund Kwan at LFA 213
Loai Abushaar landed as clean a knee knockout as you'll ever see against Edmund Kwan in their lightweight bout.
Less than a minute into the opening round, Abushaar (5-1) timed the absolute perfect stepping right knee that landed clean to the chin of Kwan (4-1), instantly putting him out cold with a hard fall to the canvas.
The winner: Muslim Salikhov def. Carlos Leal at UFC on ABC 9
"41 years young!" Muslim Salikhov came up big as an underdog against Carlos Leal in their welterweight showdown.
Salikhov (22-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) landed a brutal overhand right to take out Leal (22-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at the 0:42 mark of Round 1.
Salikhov, who was a 5-1 underdog, has now won three fights in a row. As he planned, he used his mic time to call out Stephen Thompson.

Slot's genius move with Ekitike I say this a little tongue in cheek, knowing that I'm basing this opinion off a pre-season game and his £69m plus £10m fee was definitely an over-pay based on returns he's delivered at 23 years old. But the Frenchman was particularly impressive on Monday night against Athletic Club, starting the game as the team's striker, since Darwin Nunez played and excelled in the Reds' earlier game. The 45 minutes he played against Yokohama FM last week were particularly difficult to judge - it was his debut and the match was just a week after Ekitike joined the club. His appearance was more about getting used to what an Arne Slot team was like to play in, no one had any real expectations. But at Anfield, the vibe was a little different, with a maturing team playing with a great freedom about themselves, now the social bonds between the players had been given a chance to develop. And it showed in the performance - you were left thinking, 'this team's potential is absolutely massive'. One of the reasons behind such a feeling was the opening goal of the contest, created by Ekitike taking the ball down the left-hand side and driving a pass into Mohamed Salah's feet to finish off. Not only did that moment give the fans something clear to look back on when it comes to working out why Liverpool felt the need to spend up to £79m on him, but it showcased how multi-functional a player he can be, which is going to be essential if the links with Alexander Isak actually materialise. Ekitike was fielded as a striker and he had a couple of shots on goal that were threatening, but his ability to communicate with Cody Gakpo without any words needing to be exchanged, deciding to move into the space and set-up a scoring chance was incredible. It's everything you want to see. Across his 57-minute appearance, he delivered two key passes, an accurate long-ball, two big chances created and two duels won from five. It's a friendly after all, but in my view, he proved that left-wing is definitely a position that he could play, and with relative ease, alongside moving centrally. Isak's potential transfer might lead to Ekitike playing down the left-side a bit more, but he's going to be competing for his preferred position. It's only healthy that you aren't allowed to sit on your laurels. So the Frenchman's flexibility appears to have made his transfer a genius move. Other strikers wouldn't be a comfortable at left-wing as he is and by signing Ekitike rather than a Benjamin Sesko or a Viktor Gyokeres, the Reds now have options, since Luis Diaz has left to join Bayern Munich. Whether we see Isak join or not, the team will be fine. Ekitike was superb for Eintracht Frankfurt last season and I'm sure we'll see him flourish under Arne Slot, although I admit the Premier League is a very different animal to the Bundesliga; but the two could definitely play in the same front three.

Tapology Delivers New Ranking System That Is Better Than The UFC
Tapology has just left no doubt which combat sports site sits atop the mountain. On Monday, the site introduced a new rankings system that will immediately become a reference point for the MMA world, and it is already better than the system the UFC uses that even Dana White admits is flawed. As a journalist covering MMA for 15 years, I'm personally ecstatic to see an official ranking system with no human bias and one that after some deep examination has all the rhyme and reason I need to refer to it regularly. Tapology's new proprietary ranking system for fighters eliminates human subjectivity, media opinions, and fan voting. In place of 'vibes,' as Tapology founder Gregory Saks puts it in an article by Ben Fowlkes of the Uncrowned, the new model uses a data-driven algorithm to evaluate every active UFC fighter based solely on performance metrics. This system, five years in the making, measures each fighter's last six UFC bouts, taking into account strength of schedule, short-notice fights, and the quality of wins and losses. Let's look at the upcoming middleweight bout between Joe Pyfer and the UFC's current No. 14 185-pounder, Abus Magomedov. It feels like Pyfer should be close to being ranked, but because the UFC's ranking system stops at No. 15, it is hard to know how close he is to having a number next to his name–as Jon Anik would say. Well, according to Tapology's rankings, Magomedov is ranked No. 18 and it is Pyfer with the higher ranking at No. 16. What does this tell us–especially those who are normally a slave to the UFC's system? It tells us this is an even matchup and one that is even more intriguing now than it was when it was first announced. The new ranking system also introduces a new way to look at upcoming events. We can use the rankings to see how many Top 50 fighters are set to compete. According to Tapology, the upcoming UFC Fight Night headlined by Roman Dolidze vs. Anthony Hernandez, has mostly guys and girls ranked in the Top 50. Specifically, all but five fighters set to compete are ranked inside of the Top 50 fighters in the world in their weight class. That's partially deceiving considering one of those fighters is former men's flyweight title challenger Steve Erceg. He's making his bantamweight debut in a bout against veteran Ode Osbourne. Erceg is certainly one of the 50-best bantamweights, but to the ranking system's credit, he'll have to prove it first. As White has mentioned, the UFC's current system has room for human error as it is susceptible to bias and the inevitable prisoner-of-the-moment factor. This system, while bound to have its critics, doesn't have those same flaws. That's at least refreshing. You have to wonder if White will be asked about this in Chicago at UFC 319 or before if someone has the opportunity. And if he is asked, it'll be interesting to see how he responds. Historically, White hasn't shied away from acknowledging issues with his promotion's own rankings, once calling them 'a pain in the ass.' But he's also known to resist outside influence, especially when it comes to public-facing tools not made in-house. Tapology's independent framework could quietly gain traction, even without the UFC's blessing, especially if fighters start referencing it for callouts and resume building. The more it's used to justify matchups or contender status, the harder it will be to ignore. It'll also be interesting to see if real-life circumstances will influence an evolution of Tapology's ranking system. Take it from someone who has tried to create their own MMA metrics; you sometimes think you have everything accounted for and then something unexpected happens. In any case, bravo Tapology.

Josh Thomson scolds UFC for releasing Martin Buday from 'weak' heavyweight division
Josh Thomson can't fathom why the UFC would let go of rising heavyweight contender Martin Buday. The UFC parted ways with Buday (16-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) just days after he fought out his contract in a unanimous decision win over Marcus Buchecha (5-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) earlier this month at UFC on ABC 9 in Abu Dhabi. Buday, 33, was released as the No. 12 ranked UFC heavyweight. "Let's not pretend there is a ton of great heavyweights," Thomson said on his "Weighing In" podcast. "If you want to get him beat, then get him beat so he leaves. Not re-signing him? One of two things happened: The contract negotiations didn't go well or he's just been so boring that they were like, 'Look, we don't want to have anything to do with you. You're too wrestling-based, you're too top-control based.'" Thomson takes issue with the UFC's decision, especially because of how shallow the heavyweight division is. "What I get upset about, though, is stop saying you have the best fighters in the world when you're pushing away some of the best fighters," Thomson added. "This guy is 7-1 in a weak heavyweight division where you need the best fighters. You can say this guy is the best fighter. Have him fight the guys in the top seven, top eight. If he wins, he wins. Maybe the cream rises to the top. Maybe you get a great performance out of him that makes him something that he never would have been. "If he's used to being that guy, have him fight Jailton Almeida, have him fight (Alexander) Volkov who's used to being taken down. Let's see what happens. Let's see if he rises to the occasion. You can sometimes find that little diamond in the rough by making them fight somebody that's going to pull it out of them. I just hate when I hear all the best fighters are in the UFC because we know that's not true. It bothers me when they're cutting guys that are good, and who are beating UFC fighters, and they still let them go." Buday earned his UFC contract though Dana White's Contender Series in 2021 when he knocked out Lorenzo Hood. His lone octagon loss came to Shamil Gaziev by TKO in December 2023.
