1.5 tonnes of African catfish caught in Maeps lake fishing competition
Selangor Fisheries Department director Noraisyah Abu Bakar said the event organisers had prepared containers for participants to store the invasive species, particularly African catfish, for weighing and counting purposes.
"A total of 928 catfish were caught, with a combined weight of 1,100kg as of 1.30pm, when the competition ended.
"With approval from the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), the organisers continued the fishing activity under the committee's supervision, before being informed that an additional 400kg of African catfish had been landed," she said.
She said the department was informed that unofficial fishing activity would be allowed at the lake until today and is open to visitors of the ShowTech 2025 programme.
Mardi is also expected to implement further mitigation measures, as discussed with the department.
Earlier, it was reported that some 2,000kg of African catfish, estimated at 1,300 fish averaging 1.5kg each, were believed to have been released into Maeps Lake last Thursday.
Following public complaints, the Fisheries Department conducted a site visit last Friday and held an engagement session on the matter.
The catfish were released by the organisers in conjunction with the ShowTech 2025 programme organised by Mardi, without prior notification or advisory consultation with the State Fisheries Office.

Mukuhlani appointed ACA chairman, eyes Africa T20 League and wider reach for cricket
Harare [Zimbabwe], July 19 (ANI): Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) boss Tavengwa Mukuhlani has been appointed as the new chairman of the Africa Cricket Association (ACA). Mukuhlani had held the post in an acting capacity since November and was formally voted unanimously by all 23 member boards at the ACA's annual general meeting in Singapore on Friday. 'We stand today at the threshold of a new era for African cricket - an era defined by stronger governance, broader opportunity and renewed ambition,' Mukuhlani said in a statement issued by ZC, according to ESPNcricinfo. 'Let us continue building on the progress we have made, united by a common purpose and driven by a shared love for the game,' he added. The ACA, whose membership includes two ICC Full Members, South Africa and Zimbabwe, has just completed a sweeping administrative clean up, adopting a fresh memorandum of incorporation aimed at better governance. Next on its to do list is launching a long planned Africa T20 league, reviving the Afro Asia Cup, and ensuring cricket's presence at the 2027 Africa Games in Egypt. 'These engagements are crucial not only for visibility but also for opening new doors of investment, policy support and continental collaboration,' he said. Mukuhlani has led ZC since 2015, winning three re elections, and currently serves on the ICC's finance and commercial affairs committee. Barcelona agree sponsorship deal with DR Congo to promote tourism
DEMOCRATIC Republic of Congo has agreed to pay more than 40 million euros ($46.37 million) in a sponsorship deal with Spanish soccer club Barcelona that would see a logo promoting tourism appear on some team apparel, according to a contract seen on Thursday by Reuters. The contract with Barcelona is dated June 29 and stipulates that a logo branding the war-hit Central African country as the 'heart of Africa' will appear on the backs of training and warm-up jerseys for the men's and women's teams. The logo will also appear in advertising for the club and in the club magazine and annual report, the contract says. Congo will pay the club between 10 million and 11.5 million euros annually over the next four seasons, it says. Details of the deal between Congo and Barcelona have not been announced. AS Monaco and AC Milan last month also announced sponsorship deals with Congo without disclosing the amounts. Congolese sports minister Didier Budimbu told Reuters the contract with AS Monaco is worth 1.6 million euros per season. He did not disclose the amounts for the contracts with AC Milan and Barcelona. A Congolese government source said the contract with AC Milan was worth 14 million euros per season. Announcing the AC Milan deal on June 20, Congolese tourism minister Didier M'Pambia said it was part of a government strategy 'to reposition the DRC on the international stage as an undisputed leader on the African continent' by promoting tourism and investment opportunities.
