Lakers dangling ex-Vol Dalton Knecht in trade talks, won't get first-round pick after value tanks at Summer League
The Los Angeles Lakers are finding no luck on the trade market as it pertains to former Tennessee Volunteers star Dalton Knecht. Lakers reporter Jovan Buha claims that league sources on the ground at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas told him that Knecht is no longer considered worthy of a first-round pick in a potential swap. 'Summer League has not helped Knecht's stock, and I don't think at this point he is valued as a first-round pick, in terms of an asset valuation. That was what I heard in Vegas from talking to multiple people, non-Lakers people, just gauging what would you give for Dalton Knecht? Or if the Lakers are putting Dalton Knecht in a trade, what is he worth? And the feedback I got was, no longer worth a first-round valuation,' Buha said. Knecht was packaged with Cam Reddish, a 2031 Lakers unprotected first-round pick, and a 2030 pick swap in a rescinded trade for Mark Williams with the Charlotte Hornets. His value didn't fall from that deal, though. Knecht's value tanked during Summer League play. The Athletic's Tony Jones proclaimed Knecht plays 'so selfishly' and that 'nothing else matters' on the floor when he's looking for his shot. Only around 31,000 people saw that tweet. Still, the damage is clearly done. Knecht destroyed the goodwill he entered the league with after a brilliant career on Rocky Top. No longer is he the kind of threat you feed the ball to and let go to work. Even alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James, Knecht couldn't even be someone worth trusting along the perimeter. While he had a promising March, he put up 5.1 points in 13.6 minutes per game the first month after Doncic's arrival and 2.5 points in garbage time minutes during two playoff games.

Lakers linked to deal for former UCLA Bruin who's been traded three times in two years
After spending 16 years split between the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics, there's a chance former Campbell Hall Viking and UCLA Bruin Jrue Holiday can make his way back home. Holiday was linked to the Los Angeles Lakers, though trade talks haven't begun, according to Fastbreak Journal's Grant Afseth. 'Multiple sources recently told that Holiday is a name to monitor, particularly as a potential target for the Los Angeles Lakers,' Afseth wrote. 'That's not to say active conversations are taking place, but his name continues to surface in NBA circles as the team evaluates options to add more talent around LeBron James and Luka Dončić. Other teams are monitoring the situation, though the Lakers are widely viewed as one of the most natural fits if Portland explores a deal.' Holiday could reportedly come cheap via trade due to his health. As Afseth points out, he has already had a trade amended this offseason due to a physical, when the Celtics had to take no compensation for swapping Holiday for Anfernee Simons. 'Another factor is health. Sources say Holiday's trade to Portland was delayed before becoming official due to a red flag in his physical. The original deal reportedly included two second-round picks being sent to Boston, but the Celtics ultimately received no draft compensation. Knee-related concerns are common knowledge among rival teams when evaluating Holiday's availability,' Afseth wrote. Holiday reportedly may want out of Portland. He's already been used by the Blazers as trade bait before, as part of the 2023 Damian Lillard blockbuster with the Milwaukee Bucks. It'd hardly be surprising to ultimately see him re-routed from the Rose City a second time.

LeBron trade proposal involves Paul George going to Lakers, Sixers teaming James with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, ex-Baylor Bear V.J. Edgecombe
The Los Angeles Lakers' latest move, signing Marcus Smart to a two-year, $11 million contract, was one Luka Doncic, not LeBron James, personally signed off on. It's clear that the power has shifted in L.A., and James may not be willing to stick around as a swayless second fiddle. FOX Sports proposed several potential James trades to address the situation. One of them would involve LeBron taking a 'leap of faith' and waiving his no-trade clause to okay a move to the Philadelphia 76ers to play with an oft-injured and aging former MVP big man (Joel Embiid) and a young core (Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, VJ Edgecombe). 'James and the 76ers could be a match for a variety of reasons,' FOX Sports' staff wrote. 'For starters, Philadelphia is better than its 24-58 record last season, as the prolonged absences of Joel Embiid and Paul George played an enormous role in that outcome. As a result of their nightmare 2024-25, the 76ers got the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft — assisted by a bump in the NBA Draft Lottery — and selected Baylor standout VJ Edgecombe. They also have 2024 first-rounder Jared McCain returning from a knee injury and could still re-sign restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, who broke out to average a career-high 21.9 points per game in 28 contests after the 76ers acquired him in February. 'Put James with star guard Tyrese Maxey and Philadelphia's compelling young core, and the 76ers should be at least a top-eight seed in an Eastern Conference reeling in injuries (e.g. the Indiana Pacers with Tyrese Haliburton and the Boston Celtics with Jayson Tatum). Plus, if Embiid can return at some point during the season, Philadelphia then has a three-headed scoring monster in Embiid, Maxey and James and is a legitimate threat in the East. This is a franchise built to contend right now. Of course, that potential being realized is heavily reliant on health. 'Philadelphia could base a trade package for James around George and a future unprotected first-round pick (2030). The Lakers get an immediate replacement for James in George and future draft capital for their troubles, while the 76ers shed future payroll and embark on a compelling, short-term experiment. And Philadelphia certainly qualifies as a big market, likely to James' desire. 'All that said, holding out hope for both Embiid being close to 100% for the postseason and Philadelphia's young nucleus making a drastic jump would involve James taking a major leap of faith.' A healthy Embiid may have been enough to entice James to play in the City of Brotherly Love. James as the Magic Johnson to Embiid's Kareem Abdul-Jabar could've made for electric hoops, especially with young shooters and secondary playmakers like Maxey, McCain, and Edgecombe around him. Alas, the Lakers appear set to stick with James. Yahoo Sports' Chris Cwik asserted that the Athletic's report on James planning to go to training camp 'should presumably end rumors suggesting James could leave the franchise ahead of his 23rd season in the NBA.' And yet, that pesky ESPN story and LeBron opting into the remaining year on his contract will always give James trade rumors juice.
