Judge in Maradona negligence case resigns amid scandal
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — The Argentine judge embroiled in the scandal that led to the mistrial in the case of seven health professionals accused of negligence in Diego Maradona's death resigned Tuesday after a grand jury announced it would continue a process to consider her removal.
Julieta Makintach, who withdrew from the case because of a documentary in which she appears as one of its lead characters, resigned as a judge in a Buenos Aires provincial court.
'I present my resignation with serenity, without renouncing the right to exercise my defense in the appropriate arenas,' Makintach wrote in a letter sent to the district authorities.
The judge is on leave and will have to wait for the Buenos Aires authorities to accept her resignation.
Maradona, who led Argentina to the World Cup title in 1986, died on Nov. 25, 2020 while in home hospitalization on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, days after undergoing surgery for a hematoma that formed between his skull and brain. He was 60.
Seven healthcare professionals were brought to trial for allegedly failing to provide adequate care.

'Rust' crew settles lawsuit against film producers and Alec Baldwin in fatal shooting

(AP) — A settlement has been reached in the civil lawsuit alleging negligence in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the Western movie 'Rust', according to court documents released Friday. The lawsuit was brought by three 'Rust' crew members seeking compensation for emotional distress from producers of 'Rust," including Alec Baldwin as co-producer and lead actor. The civil suit accused producers of failing to follow industry safety rules — allegations they denied. Terms of the settlement were not available. Attorneys for 'Rust' producers and the plaintiffs could not immediately be reached by phone or email. Plaintiffs to the lawsuit included Ross Addiego, a front-line crew member who witnessed at close range the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins at close during a rehearsal on October 2021 on a filmset ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe. A charge of involuntary manslaughter against Baldwin was dismissed at trial last year on allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defense. Separately, 'Rust' armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and completed an 18-month sentence in May. Prosecutors accused Gutierrez-Reed of unwittingly bringing live ammunition on set and failing to follow basic gun safety protocols. Baldwin was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal on a movie set outside Santa Fe when the revolver went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Addiego testified at Gutierrez-Reed's trial and appeared before the grand jury that indicted Baldwin. The filming of 'Rust' was completed in Montana. The Western was released in theaters in May.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Guyana has pledged to crack down on gold smuggled across the border from neighboring Venezuela at the urging of the U.S. government. President Irfaan Ali said late Friday that the government of the South American country is dedicating 'enormous resources' to thwart the smuggling, which has long been a problem. He said authorities have increased border patrols and improved monitoring in mining regions. Local officials have said they suspect that Venezuelan-sanctioned gold is being mixed with gold mined in Guyana and then passed off as local production and sold to markets in the U.S., Canada, the Middle East and elsewhere. In 2021, the Royal Canadian Mint suspended gold purchases from a major export company in Guyana because officials suspected some shipments had been mixed with Venezuelan gold, an allegation the company denied. Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Guyana has suspended the visas of several miners suspected of smuggling Venezuelan gold overseas. Gold is Guyana's second most important export after oil, generating nearly $1 billion last year. Some 434,000 ounces of gold were produced last year, up from 432,000 ounces the previous year, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources. It noted that up to 50% of local gold production is smuggled out of Guyana. U.S. Ambassador Nicole Theriot on Friday praised Guyana's cooperation, noting that the countries have worked together to secure Guyana's border with Venezuela . Relations between the two South American neighbors remain tense given a bitter dispute over the Essequibo region , which Venezuela has long claimed as its own. It represents two-thirds of Guyana and is rich in gold, diamonds, timber and other natural resources.
