UFC on ESPN 70 gets Chris Curtis, Jake Matthews among other Nashville fight card additions
The UFC's seventh visit to Nashville, Tenn. is taking shape.
Three new bouts have been added to UFC on ESPN 70 including Jake Matthews vs. Chidi Njokuani, Max Griffin vs. Chris Curtis, and Junior Tafa vs. Ateba Gautier. The promotion announced the news Tuesday.
UFC on ESPN 70 takes place July 12 at the Bridgestone Arena and is headlined by a heavyweight bout between former title challenger Derrick Lewis against undefeated prospect Tallison Teixeira.
Njokuani (25-10 MMA, 5-3 UFC) looks to build on his 3-0 run since he dropped back down to welterweight. Meanwhile, Matthews (21-7 MMA, 14-7 UFC), a veteran of the weight class, looks to get his own 3-0 run, as he's coming off back-to-back decision wins over Phil Rowe and Francisco Prado.
Additionally, Max Griffin welcomes Chris Curtis back to welterweight. Curtis (31-12 MMA, 5-4 UFC), who's competed all of his 10 UFC fights at 185 pounds, will be making his promotional welterweight debut. He looks to snap a two-fight losing skid now in a new division. "Pain" Griffin is 2-2 in his past four trips to the octagon, with his most recent one being a submission loss to Michael Chiesa in December at UFC 310.
Lastly, Tafa (6-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) will also be trying out a new weight class – light heavyweight. He takes on Gautier (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who's coming off a devastating KO win in his debut fight against Jose Medina in Mexico City in March.

Gabriel Bonfim wants Colby Covington next: 'An appropriate next step'
Gabriel Bonfim isn't listening to the noise. Mentally, he's already on to the next battle. The rising Brazilian contender picked up his most prolific win to date on July 12 when he defeated welterweight legend Stephen Thompson at UFC on ESPN 70 by split decision. "I feel great and I'm happy with my performance," Bonfim recently told MMA Junkie through a Portuguese-language translator. "My opponent is a legend of the sport, so that victory gives me confidence moving forward, and also shows me some things that I need to work on if I'm to achieve that status myself. I'm very hungry to build on my momentum." As for the judges' decision and the wave of disagreement that came from fans online, Bonfim remains confident. "I've gone back and watched it a couple times," Bonfim said. "Overall, I'm happy. I think it was a good performance, and I stuck to the game plan. I think it was an exciting fight, which is something that's very important to me -- giving the fans something to enjoy and remember." "... I was confident that the judges would make the correct decision, and they did in declaring me the winner. There were aspects of the fight that made it close at times, but I did enough to win. Perhaps those who doubt my victory haven't rewatched the fight, which is something that I recommend." Regardless of the armchair judges' nasty social media comments, the record books have a big "W" on Bonfim's resume. The victory even landed him in the official UFC rankings at No. 14. He's since bumped to No. 13. "Myself and my team have worked so hard to get to this point," Bonfim said. "It's an honor to be recognized in this way, and it gives me even more confidence that I can continue to climb the rankings and be the champion." With one welterweight great defeated, Bonfim has turned his attention to another one – one that is a bit more loud and bombastic. Bonfim wants Colby Covington. "I'd like to fight Colby Covington," Bonfim said. "A fight against a former champion is an appropriate next step in my career after defeating Thompson, who also has a very impressive resume. That's a great matchup for me, and I believe it makes the most sense for my career. Most importantly, I've heard from a lot of fans, online and in person, who say that's the fight they want to see next, so let's do it." Bonfim, 27, has won three fights in a row since his first career loss to Nicolas Dalby. Covington, 37, has lost three of his most recent four fights including most recently a December bout vs. Joaquin Buckley.

Michel Pereira determined to 'finish and kill' vs. Marco Tulio at UFC Fight Night 257
LAS VEGAS – Michel Pereira has worked on his English and his fighting skills ahead of his UFC Fight Night 257 showdown with Marco Tulio. Now a full-time resident in Nevada and training at Xtreme Couture, Pereira (30-13 MMA, 9-4 UFC) is pursuing growth in all areas of life as he prepares to step back in the octagon with Tulio (14-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) for a middleweight bout on the Aug. 23 card at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai (ESPN+). "I'm very excited for this fight," Pereira told MMA Junkie Radio in English. "I train every day. I eat good. I'm very strong. My training is good and I'm very excited." After going on an eight-fight winning streak under the UFC banner, Pereira has now lost consecutive fights against Anthony Hernandez and Abus Magomedov where his grappling defense was exposed. He's worked diligently to shore up his holes, and as such made some shifts. Excitement is in his DNA, though, and Pereira said he's not going to show up fighting with a different identity. "I think my plan is different than last fight," Pereira said. "I trained very good now. It's better I don't talk about this. My fans will like this plan. I have 43 fights, so for me it's my style. It's easy. I train every day and in the fight I'm the same. My style is the same. There's no pressure." No matter what tactical changes are made, Pereira said his mission remains the same: Defeat Tulio in the most highlight-reel fashion possible. "This fight, I can finish and kill," Pereira said. "Marco Tulio is a good strikes. He's my friend. He's a good guy, a Brazilian guy. But it's my work. Let's go with one big show and knock out Marco Tulio."
