Kurtley Beale among first 5 selected for Indigenous squad to play the British and Irish Lions
The 95-test backline utility had been set to play for the Perth-based Western Force against the Lions in the tour-opening match Saturday but was ruled out with hamstring injury and replaced by current Wallaby squad member Ben Donaldson.
Instead, Beale was named Thursday as one of the first five players for the First Nations and Pasifika XV team set to play against the Lions in Melbourne on July 22. The Lions are in Australia for nine games including tests on July 19, 26 and Aug. 2.
Beale, who hit form for the Force this year after returning from a long-term Achilles injury, played in Australia's 2-1 series loss to the Lions in 2013.
Rob Leota, who has played 21 tests for the Wallabies, most recently at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, was also named to the Indigenous team along with Fiji-born back rower Seru Uru. Also named were Charlie Gamble, a flanker for the New South Wales Waratahs, and Andy Muirhead, who has scored 180 points in 108 games for the ACT Brumbies since 2017.
Former Australia backrower Toutai Kefu, who helped the Wallabies win the 1999 World Cup and the 2001 series against the British and Irish Lions and has been head coach of Tonga's national team, will coach the First Nations and Pasifika team. The remainder of the squad is yet to be confirmed.
Lions utility back Elliot Daly knows Beale better than most of his teammates. Beale played with Daly at English club Wasps in 2016-17 and they formed a strong friendship.
'If he didn't get injured in that semifinal against Leicester in 2017 I think we would have won the title,' Daly said. 'He came at a time when we were playing attacking rugby and he slotted in really well.'
The Lions, made up of players from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, lost 28-24 to Argentina last week in a warmup for the tour. They will play the Wallabies in tests on July 19 in Brisbane, July 26 in Melbourne and Aug. 2 in Sydney.
The Australian section of the tour kicks off this weekend on the west coast, where Donaldson will join five other current Wallabies in the Force lineup.
'Any chance you get to play against the Lions, you probably take it with both hands,' Donaldson said.

Tim Tszyu is facing a tough career call after his second devastating loss to Sebastian Fundora with the Aussie boxer warned to avoid a mega-money bout with American Keith Thurman. While there is plenty of question marks over his future in the sport, promoter George Rose suggested Tszyu would take some time away first to recover after taking so much damage. Although he had no doubt Tszyu can bounce back. "First and foremost, he needs to just recover from this, go through your process of facing defeat," Rose said after the fight. "You've got to go through your moments with that, and then it's a decision for him. "He's still, as far as talent and capability goes, very much a very capable fighter, a very talented fighter, and I still think that he still beats most of the guys in the division on his night. It's just a decision up to him as to what he's going to do, whether he gets back in the gym on Monday, whether he has a break, what he does." While fans are questioning where Tszyu goes from here, one of his rivals believes there is no doubt the Aussie can bounce back. Although he warned him who he should avoid as his next opponent. Keith Thurman's warning to Tim Tszyu Thurman was in attendance at the Tszyu fight, clearly keen to potentially build the momentum for their potential fight if the Aussie won, but was quick to warn the 30-year-old it could be career-ending if they go toe-to-toe. The outspoken American suggested if they fight it won't go well for Tszyu after his latest displays. 'How bad do want Tim Tszyu to get beat up?' he told The Punch Podcast. 'Y'all hate Tim Tszyu? 'Y'all want him to get murdered?' Thurman felt Tszyu may have overestimated his own talent, before proving himself overseas against elite competition. Speaking on his way out of the arena, Thurman feels Tszyu can build his legacy back up with a few wins. Although he warned him about stepping into the ring against him. 'No, the kid's not done but they need to pick the right fights,' Thurman said. 'They need to pick somebody who is better than (Joey) Spencer but who is not a world champion. Or a Hall of Famer like myself. You take me over to the Gold Coast and I will end Tim Tszyu's career. If that's what you all want to see, pay me and I'll do it. I'll get rid of Tszyu.' And this could see Tszyu go home and reset. 'It's hard to not feel this train ride come to a halt,' Porter said. 'It's doesn't mean it's going to end, it's just slowed down...I don't believe that Tim Tszyu has fought his way out of title contention. It just doesn't go through Sebastian Fundora." Porter suggested there were a number of 'technical errors' in Tszyu's style that need to be addressed if he wants to take on top competition again, which starts with his defence and head movement.

League great Greg Alexander has cast doubts over suggestions the Melbourne Storm are NRL premiership favourites this year and has tipped the Raiders to beat them to the minor premiership. While fellow Penrith legend Scott Sattler says the stunning form of the resurgent Panthers has convinced him they can win a fifth straight grand final in 2025. The Storm's hopes of ending the regular season on top of the ladder took a hit on Saturday night when they went down by two points to Manly in a 16-18 nail-biter at AAMI stadium. Melbourne were seven wins from seven at home before that defeat to the Sea Eagles and saw their six-game NRL winning streak snapped after a gutsy display from Manly. It sparked fresh questions about whether the third-placed Storm deserved to be considered favourites to win the grand final this season. Craig Bellamy's side were still without superstar fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen, who missed his third game in a row with a calf strain. His return will be a massive boost for Melbourne's premiership hopes but Alexander says he's still not completely convinced they're the team to beat. Springbok forward Jasper Wiese's headbutt leads to four-match suspension
MBOMBELA, South Africa (AP) — South Africa back-rower Jasper Wiese's headbutt cost him a four-match suspension on Tuesday. Wiese deliberately knocked heads with Italy prop Danilo Fischetti on Saturday and was sent off with nearly an hour remaining. The Springboks still won 45-0. Wiese will miss the Springboks' game against Georgia in Mbombela this Saturday and the first three rounds of the Rugby Championship in August and September. They involve two home games against Australia and a test in New Zealand. At his disciplinary hearing, Wiese accepted he committed foul play but not a red card offense. The panel disagreed.
