
Irish business leaders: Africa key to increasing agriculture, food production

Irish business leaders whose enterprises operate in Africa have appealed to other businesses to empower Africans, including young people, to increase agriculture and food production on the continent.
Promoting education in Africa's food sector, and bringing those individuals forward to lead projects, is key to unlocking the continent's full potential, Chris Teeger of the Kerry Group — which owns the largest and most advanced taste facility in Africa — told a panel discussion at the Africa Ireland Trade Horizons conference in Dublin on Tuesday.

'We need to see the value in African people. The youth are the key. The spirit they bring to everything is everything. We need to take those local people and youth, educate them, unskill them and let them lead the future of the food production sector in Africa,' Teeger said.
'We have employed many young people who are graduates from a vast number of universities and they have just grown and grown.'
He noted that there is no shortage of resources in Africa and that South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria are leading producers of rice, maize and wheat, adding: 'We need to stop shipping commodities to Africa that are already available in Africa.'
Ivor Queally, the chief executive officer of QK Group South Africa, backed Teeger's assessment of food production in the country.
The QK group entered South Africa in 2005 and is now a key role player in the cold storage market, boasting one of the leading meat packing facilities in the country.
Queally recalled that the company had discovered early on that the process of starting operations in South Africa would not be easy.
'We realised early that there was a gap in terms of education and skills. We therefore had to set up schools to educate our employees. We then noticed a lot of absenteeism in schools and found out that
The investment in people, rather than products, had proved a success, Queally added.
'When we entered South Africa, we brought in Irish people to train our employees. Now, we have no Irish employees in South Africa and we bring Africans to Europe to do training on this side.'
Africa needs to be promoted in Europe to allow investment that can help the continent reach its full potential, both Queally and Teeger told the forum, adding that Europeans need to understand that opportunities in the food production sector are plenty and that the relationship between the two regions can be equal and mutually beneficial.

Richmond also confirmed that Ireland — the most educated nation in the world — will push the importance of education and how it can address major global and economic issues. Richmond said having been a poor nation for much of its history, educating its people had contributed to boosting Ireland's economy. 'I don't want to give too much of a history lesson, but it cannot be understated how poor Ireland was. We were a developing country. There's no dispute about that. We had a massive famine, a civil war; we were a new independent state,' he said. 'Our focus on education started in 1967 when the then Irish minister of education made second-level education free. In 1994, third-level education was made free. We now have officially the most educated population in the world and a workforce of 2.8 million people [out of a population of 5 million].' The country is tweaking and tailoring its education system to make sure that it is fit for purpose, he added. 'Over the last decade, we have increased the amount of projects coming out of very specific qualifications in areas relating to the life sciences sector and the tech sector. We work hand in hand with third-level institutions and businesses that want to invest in Ireland.' The life sciences sector — encompassing pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical devices — is a major contributor to the Irish economy, generating over €100 billion in exports annually and directly employing over 100 000 people. However, Ireland is facing a housing crisis: 'We need more people working in those areas, not to just construct the houses that we so desperately need, but also the infrastructure, the water, the roads and the healthcare facilities,' he said. Statistics show that Ireland's Richmond reiterated that investing in education was crucial to eradicating poverty. 'When we go to G20, the central plank has to be education' to boost the economy and facilitate development, he said. President Xi Jinping says China, Senegal inject fresh impetus into Global South cooperation

Xi made the remarks when meeting with Prime Minister of Senegal Ousmane Sonko, who is in China to attend the 2025 Summer Davos Forum, in Beijing. The Chinese president noted that he co-chaired the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye last September, leading China-Africa relations into a new phase of jointly building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era. Xi also said that China and Senegal should firmly support each other's independent and self-reliant development paths, strengthen party-to-party and governance exchanges, and continuously consolidate the foundation of political mutual trust. China and Senegal are partners and good brothers on the road to development and revitalization, Xi said, adding that China is willing to work closely with Senegal to implement the 10 partnership actions between China and Africa, carry out more people's livelihood projects, and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Senegal's renewable energy, digital infrastructure and other sectors, becoming partners for win-win cooperation. More visa officials to clear SA-Ireland applications backlog
The Republic of Ireland has increased the number of officials processing visa applications from South Africans seeking to visit or work in that country, as it moves to clear a backlog caused by a huge spike in visa applications. Neale Richmond, minister of state for international development and diaspora, said the decision to impose strict visa conditions was taken over a year ago when the country experienced a 100% increase in people entering the island nation from South Africa and Nigeria and claiming international protected status. 'That's why we put them on the list of those who require visas, to stop people who were coming because it was visa-free travel. They were getting here claiming international protection,' Richmond said on the sidelines of the Africa-Ireland Horizons conference in Dublin. The imposition of the strict visa regime resulted in applications for work, family and travel visas taking months to process as the government agency responsible could not cope with the many applications. 'Those moves were very harsh, but they were necessary at the time to re-regulate migration,' Richmond said. 'I have quite a large South African minority population in my constituency who've been here a long time; they have been here 20 to 25 years, they are Irish citizens, but Granny can't come and visit the new child, business partners can't come. The head of Nandos lives in my constituency ... It's had very real human consequences; it's been tough.' A decision was taken to triple the number of officials processing visas from South Africa and this had brought the waiting time down to three months, he said. 'We've doubled the resources in terms of visa applications in South Africa, both here in Dublin and at our embassy in Pretoria. The acute issue was far more (serious) in South Africa than Nigeria; not only for established commercial reasons but also for very clear people-to-people reasons. The process will now go much quicker but will always be under review.' The country is prioritising South Africans for critical skills visas, he added.
