Lorry carrying luxury cars catch fire near Poigai, Tamil Nadu; driver escape unharmed

Vellore (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 28 (ANI): A container lorry transporting luxury cars worth Rs 3.6 crore caught fire near Poigai village in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district on Friday, causing a temporary disruption along the busy Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway, police said.
The lorry, carrying two high-end luxury cars valued at Rs 1.8 crore each, was en route from Chennai Port to Bengaluru when the incident occurred.
The driver, identified as a 20-year-old Akash from Uttar Pradesh, reportedly swerved the vehicle to avoid an oncoming two-wheeler, causing the lorry to veer off and come to rest in an empty roadside area.
The vehicle remained parked under overhead power lines for an extended period. According to preliminary investigations, strong winds may have caused the wires to scrape, triggering an electric surge. This surge is believed to have led to an explosion in the diesel tank, igniting a fire that engulfed the front section of the lorry.
Upon receiving the alert, officers from Virinjipuram Police Station quickly notified the Vellore District Fire and Rescue Services. Firefighters arrived promptly and battled the flames for over an hour before successfully bringing the blaze under control.
While the front of the lorry was completely destroyed in the fire, the container section housing the cars remained intact. No injuries were reported, and the luxury vehicles were not damaged. (ANI)

MUMBAI: Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Saturday launched the electric tractor for farmers in Maharashtra. He said it will be eco-friendly and economical, and significantly transform the agricultural sector. The first such e-tractor — which Sarnaik claimed is the first of its kind in the country — was registered at the Thane RTO on Sunday morning. 'Designed primarily for agricultural operations, e-tractors require only Rs 300 to plough one acre, whereas diesel tractors cost between Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500. This reduction in operational costs, combined with lower maintenance requirements, offers substantial daily savings for farmers,' Sarnaik said. The Late Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation might provide interest-free loans for e-tractor purchases, he said. 'E-tractors offer substantial advantages with minimal maintenance costs and 60–70% lower operational expenses compared to diesel variants. The Maharashtra State Electric Vehicle Policy 2025 offers subsidies up to ₹1.5 lakh for e-tractor purchases,' an official said.

Class 10 student abducted, trafficked, raped: Maharashtra couple arrested from Telangana's Adilabad; probe on
HYDERABAD: Adilabad police arrested a couple from Maharashtra on Saturday for trafficking a minor tribal girl for Rs 10,000. A rape case has also been registered against a man in Rajasthan under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act for repeatedly sexually abusing the girl. He has not yet been arrested. The couple has been charged with human trafficking and kidnapping. Bheempur police registered a case on June 22 after the girl's family reported her missing, having failed in their attempts to trace her. Adilabad deputy superintendent of police L Jeevan Reddy said that on June 2, while the girl was alone at home, Nirmala Bapunja Athra, 47, and her husband Bapunya Rajaram Athra, 49, from Kinhla village in Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, approached her. The couple was in the Adilabad village as they knew people there. They reportedly engaged the girl in conversation, misled her, and abducted her. They first took her to Adilabad, then travelled by bus to Nagpur, and from there by train to Kota in Rajasthan. 'They then took her to a village, threatened her, and handed her over to a man,' said the DSP, adding that the man, Karan alias Bhagavath Menon, kept her at his house and repeatedly sexually abused her. According to cops, after learning from Nirmala Athra that girl's family had filed a complaint, Karan handed the girl back to her on June 23. Police said Karan is married and divorced. Nirmala and Rajaram brought the girl back to Adilabad, and she returned home on June 25. The DSP said the couple was arrested at Adilabad railway station while attempting to flee.
