The Man Who Would Save Fro-Yo
Noah Kueny-Lichtman was beaming. The first 100 people to arrive at the 16 Handles grand opening in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, had been promised a free frozen yogurt treat — and he was the last person to get one. His friends, right behind him, had to pay. He took bites from a pink cup filled with cookie dough and peanut butter cup-flavored yogurt, topped with brownie bites, Oreos and hot fudge, chatting over the sound of D.J.-spun family friendly party bops. Mr. Kueny-Lichtman, 18, said his visit, coming as it did just weeks before he was to head off to Tulane to study finance and classics, was 'a full circle moment.' He used to frequent another 16 Handles in the neighborhood, now closed, as a young child, so returning to the shop, with its rows of yogurt machines and tubs of spoonable toppings was 'pretty nostalgic.' That the nostalgia might attract Gen Z and millennial treat-seekers, recalling the financial-crisis era fro-yo boom of their youth, or slightly older shoppers, craving the TCBY-style desserts of the 1980s, is all part of the plan. The vibe of 16 Handles is a 'mix of nostalgic and cool,' said Neil Hershman, the company's 30-year-old chief executive, bridging the industry's slightly dusty reputation with his ambitions for another boom time. Mr. Hershman believes that fro-yo is cool — that people love it, that the love never went away and that the last wave of stores was mismanaged but the field still has major potential. It's core to his pitch. He says that 16 Handles, which operates with a franchise model, is profitable, and that he hopes to expand with more than 200 new stores across the country in the next few years. The people want fro-yo, he maintains. He is prepared to give it to them. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Franklin Q3 Earnings Beat, AUM Rises Sequentially, Stock Down
Franklin Resources Inc. BEN reported third-quarter fiscal 2025 (ended June 30) adjusted earnings of 49 cents per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 48 cents per share. However, the bottom line compared unfavorably with 60 cents reported in the year-ago quarter. BEN's results benefited from improved assets under management (AUM) balance. However, lower revenues and higher expenses acted as a spoilsport. Shares of BEN are trending 2.5% lower in the early market trading session today. Net income (GAAP basis) was $92.3 million, down 46.9% year over year. Our estimate for the metric was $131.2 million. Franklin's Revenues Decline & Expenses Rise Y/Y Total operating revenues decreased 2.8% year over year to $2.06 billion in the fiscal third quarter. The fall was due to a decline in all the components. Nonetheless, the reported figure outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2 billion. Investment management fees declined 2.9% year over year to $1.64 billion. We projected the same to be $1.54 billion. Sales and distribution fees decreased 1.8% year over year to $351.9 million. We projected the metric to be $327 million. Shareholder-servicing fees fell 3.1% on a year over year basis to $59.9 million. We projected the metric to be $56.7 million. Other revenues decreased 11.6% year over year to $11.4 million. Total operating expenses increased slightly year over year to $1.91 billion. The rise was due to an increase in compensation and benefits costs, information systems and technology costs, amortization of intangible assets, and general, administrative, and other expenses. Our estimate for the metric was pegged at $1.81 billion. Franklin reported an operating margin of 7.5% compared with 10.5% in the year-ago quarter. Franklin's AUM Rises As of June 30, 2025, total AUM was $1.61 trillion, up 4.6% sequentially. We projected the same to be $1.55 trillion. Franklin's long-term net outflows were $9.3 billion in the reported quarter. The average AUM was $1.57 trillion, which decreased marginally on a sequential basis. We had projected an average AUM of $1.55 trillion. Franklin's Capital Position As of June 30, 2025, cash and cash equivalents and investments were $6.8 billion, while total stockholders' equity was $13.1 billion. Franklin's Capital Distribution In the reported quarter, Franklin repurchased 7.3 million shares for $157.4 million. Our View on Franklin Franklin's efforts to diversify business through acquisitions, its rising AUM, and a strong distribution platform that offers it a first-mover advantage will aid its top line. However, a rising expense base due to the company's focus on technological upgrades is likely to hurt the bottom line. Franklin Resources, Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise Franklin Resources, Inc. price-consensus-eps-surprise-chart | Franklin Resources, Inc. Quote Currently, Franklin has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Performance of Other Asset Managers Lazard Inc.'s LAZ second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share of 52 cents beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 38 cents. This compared favorably with earnings of 49 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. LAZ's results were positively impacted by increases in revenues in the financial advisory and asset management sectors. A rise in AUM balances was another positive. However, a decrease in revenues in the corporate segment and elevated operating expenses acted as a spoilsport. BlackRock's BLK second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of $12.05 per share handily surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $10.66. The figure reflects a rise of 16% from the year-ago quarter. BLK's results benefited from a rise in revenues. AUM witnessed robust growth, reaching a record high of $12.52 trillion, driven by net inflows, market appreciation, and a favorable foreign exchange impact. However, higher expenses acted as a headwind. Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research? Today, you can download 7 Best Stocks for the Next 30 Days. Earnings UL: Unilever Stock (UL) Melts as Ice Cream Demand Fails to Sweeten Profits
Shares in Unilever (UL) melted slightly today despite strong demand for ice cream helping it to lick Q2 sales forecasts. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. The group, whose products include Dove soap and Marmite, said underlying sales for Q2 came in 3.8% higher, beating expectations of 3.6%. Sales growth for the first six months was up 3.4%. However, first-half profit before taxation fell 8.5% to €5.09 billion from last year's €5.57 billion. Earnings per share were €1.42, down 3.7% from €1.47 a year ago. Ice Dream Demand, particularly in North America and Europe, was helped by the performance of its ice cream arm, which makes Ben & Jerry's, Magnum and Calippo. It saw sales rise by 7.1% in Q2 and by 5.9% in the first six months of 2025. It said new innovative products had helped drive demand such as the Magnum 'multisensory' Utopia range and Cornetto disc cones as well as hotter weather. The previously announced demerger of the ice cream business will see it become the Magnum Ice Cream Company and float with a primary listing in Amsterdam. Unilever said this is on track to complete by mid-November, with the company to retain a minority stake worth less than 20%. The spin-off is part of efforts by Unilever to move further toward beauty and personal care, with less of a focus on food. It also sold its Vegetarian Butcher plant-based brand earlier this year and confirmed last month it was exploring the potential sale of its Graze snacking line. It said revenue in its food range was up 2.8% in Q2, helped by demand for flavored mayonnaise. It said personal care grew by 4.8% and beauty and wellbeing by 3.7%. It has sought to grow the personal care business further in recent months, with deals to acquire the fast-growing Wild and Dr Squatch brands. More Beauty Fernando Fernandez, chief executive, said: 'Looking ahead, our priorities are clear: more beauty and wellbeing and personal care, disproportionate investment in the US and India, and a sharper focus on premium segments and digital commerce. We are building a marketing and sales machine.' The company maintained its fiscal 2025 outlook expecting underlying sales growth within the range of 3% to 5%, and an improvement in underlying operating margin versus 18.4% in 2024. It also expects second-half sales growth ahead of the first half despite subdued market conditions, supported by continued strength in developed markets and improving performance in emerging markets, notably in India, Indonesia, and China. As one can see below, APAC sales have been declining for the last three years, so an increased focus will be welcome. 'It's ironic that the one area of Unilever doing best is the part that's about to be jettisoned,' said Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell. 'That could help to drive investor interest in The Magnum Ice Cream Company.' Is UL a Good Stock to Buy Now? On TipRanks, UL has a Moderate Buy consensus based on 1 Buy rating. Its highest price target is $73. UL stock's consensus price target is $73, implying a 24.87% upside. These ratings and price targets will likely change as analysts update their coverage after today's earnings report.
