'Butchers': GP ban upheld after abortion, race rants
A doctor who posted dozens of anti-abortion rants online and described medics who carry out the procedures as butchers will remain banned from practice. Jereth Kok was suspended in 2019 for professional misconduct in relation to the online posts that also described abortion doctors as "contract killers", equated abortion to murder and described being transgender as a mental health issue. He is also accused of posting racist comments online about Chinese people and Islam. The Victorian Civil and Administration Tribunal found Dr Kok engaged in professional misconduct, between May 20, 2010 and October 15, 2021, when he posted and published on social media and internet forums. He maintains that many posts were satirical or taken out of context. The tribunal last week upheld his ban. It found that Dr Kok's posts were "disrespectful" and "not sufficiently balanced", despite acknowledging that many were political or religious in nature and unrelated to his clinical practice. In one of his many posts, the general practitioner said "the Royal Women's Hospital happens to be Melbourne's premier publicly funded baby-killing facility". The Medical Board of Australia said the comment denigrated, demeaned and slurred medical practitioners at the hospital who provided abortion treatment to patients. While Dr Kok accepted that his commentary was "discourteous" to people who worked at the hospital, he submitted he was expressing his views and beliefs about abortion in a discussion on a Christian website. In another comment to an online story about doctors performing abortions, Dr Kok suggested the author should replace the word doctor with "butcher". He later told the tribunal that he would avoid this type of language in future, but said he had strong views about abortion being immoral as a Christian and believed he was required to speak out about the issue. He also referred to treatment of gender dysphoria as "medical butchery". Other posts were found to have denigrated, demeaned and slurred medical practitioners who recognise and treat gender dysphoria, perform abortion treatment and those who followed COVID-19 public health orders. He was also found to have expressed sentiments of violence and made derogatory statements towards racial and religious groups, LGBTQI+ people and legitimised anti-vaccination during the COVID pandemic. Political party Family First on Monday slammed the decision - calling it a "gross injustice and chilling attack on freedom of speech". Family First's national director Lyle Shelton said the party will fight to repeal similar anti-free speech laws in all states starting with fielding candidates at upcoming elections in South Australia, Victoria and NSW. "Dr Kok has harmed no patient. His only 'crime' was to express his views online — many of them satirical or Christian in nature — and for that, he has been punished with the loss of his medical career," Mr Shelton said. "We will not sit by while the state tramples conscience, truth and freedom. "Dr Kok's case must be the turning point." Lead poisoning investigation in China alleges cover up by kindergarten
An investigation into the lead poisoning of hundreds of children in western China has revealed an alleged cover-up by the management of the kindergarten at the centre of the scandal. Authorities in China's Gansu province published an update on the probe this week, after 247 blood test samples of children were found to have abnormally high levels of lead earlier this month. Chinese authorities have arrested six people — including the Tianshui kindergarten's principal — and at least 27 government officials are reported to be under further investigation. The latest report said that hospital workers had tampered with the children's blood tests, that the kindergarten's management had bribed local authorities, and there had been no routine food safety checks at the facility in the past two years. Previously, investigators found that the kindergarten management allowed kitchen staff to produce food using paint pigments purchased online that were later found to contain lead and were marked as inedible. Kitchen staff first bought the paint pigments in 2024, according to the investigation update. It said that the paint pigments were used because the kindergarten management wanted to improve the colour and appearance of its food. Pictures of the colourful food were posted widely on social media to attract more students. Videos unable to be verified by the ABC appeared on Chinese social media at the weekend, apparently showing parents confronting police and authorities about the lead contamination. Some parents in the videos claimed they were beaten by police and demanded further investigation of the case. In one of the videos, an angry parent who had their child's blood tested in multiple provinces reads the test results, with the results from a neighbouring province revealing lead contamination eight times higher than the local test results. The government's latest investigation found the provincial testing lab's practices were inadequate. At least two blood test results received at a local hospital were tampered with. One test result was changed from 292.37 to 42.37 micrograms per litre, while another was changed from 440.14 to 103 micrograms per litre. The report also found that the provincial Centre for Disease Control staff did not perform up to standard and the 247 blood test results were unreliable. The report said all 247 children who were found with high levels of lead in their blood had received treatment and only one was still in hospital. Local media reported earlier that in 2006, two factories not far from the kindergarten allegedly polluted the local water system, which also caused more than 200 children to fall sick. The two factories involved were shut down after the scandal. The public has suspected a connection between the 2006 pollution event and this month's blood contamination issue. The latest investigation report claimed officials had tested water and dirt samples collected from the former factory sites, with results showing the lead levels met local requirements.

It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, but for one Aussie newlywed, it soon became a holiday nightmare. Layton McCann was on his honeymoon with his new wife Whitney in Mexico after spending two weeks in the United States. They arrived in the coastal resort town of Playa Del Carmen but within days their start to married life began to take a turn. Mr McCann begun to experience severe abdominal pain with the couple quickly calling the hotel doctor. The doctor gave Mr McCann something for his pain and then left. Mrs McCann's sister, Bronte Holland, told the DailyMail her sister called the doctor back after 10 minutes as his condition had not improved and he was in intense pain. 'They sent him to hospital and he's been there now for nearly two weeks,' she said. The hospital stay showed that Mr McCann had contracted an infection that led to pancreatitis and he was rushed to intensive care - but they're unsure of what caused it. The couple's Mothers flew to Mexico to support the newlyweds the same day Mr McCann was put in an induced coma and placed on a ventilator. The family considered medically evacuating Mr McCann but he was too unstable to travel. 'I'm a nurse and from what my sister's telling me, they're doing a really good job taking care of him. They've been checking his bloods, doing CT scans every day,' Ms Holland said. Despite this, Ms Holland said the language barrier added additional stress to an already pressure-filled situation.
