100,000 hectares of Kerala's rubber untapped despite rising national demand
Across India, the total untapped rubber cultivation area exceeds 200,000 hectares. This comes as the country imports 40-45% of its annual natural rubber (NR) demand, estimated at 1.4 million tonnes, say officials from the representative body of six major Indian tyre companies, which account for over 90% of the nation's tyre production.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Arun Mammen, Chairman of ATMA, highlighted that nearly 40% of the industry's natural rubber (NR) needs are currently met by imports due to limited domestic supply. Most Indian-produced NR is consumed locally, leaving very little for export.
To tackle this shortage, the tyre industry, guided by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, teamed up with the Rubber Board of India to launch Project INROAD.

"We are marking 75 years of India-Argentina diplomatic relations and 5 years since we elevated our relationship to a Strategic Partnership. Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs Periasamy Kumaran said the two leaders agreed to enhance India-Argentina collaboration across a range of sectors, including trade and commerce, technology, defence, space, health and pharmaceuticals. Mr. Modi and Mr. Milei also agreed to further deepen the strategic partnership, he said adding they discussed the necessity to expand and diversify trade. At a press conference, Mr. Kumaran said Prime Minister Modi sought Argentina's support in expanding the India-MERCOSUR trade agreement, noting that it could deepen trade ties between the two nations as well. The preferential trade agreement (PTA) is aimed at expanding economic ties between India and the MERCOSUR bloc that includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Mr. Modi and Mr. Milei also underlined the need to enhance access for agricultural products in each other's markets and issued instructions to respective officials to set up a joint working group on agriculture. The relationship between the two countries was elevated to strategic partnership during the visit to India of the then Argentine President Mauricio Macri in February 2019. The two sides have been cooperating in several key areas such as trade, defence, critical minerals, oil and gas, nuclear energy, agriculture, culture and technology. India and Argentina have significant cooperation in the mineral resources sector, particularly in lithium -- a critical input for India's green energy transition. An MoU on cooperation in the field of mineral resources was signed in August 2022. The first meeting of the joint working group set up under the framework of the MoU was held in January. The India-Argentina bilateral trade has been on an upswing. The trade volume more than doubled in three years from 2019 to 2022, peaking at $6.4 billion in 2022. In 2021 and 2022, India was Argentina's fourth largest trading partner. In 2024, total annual bilateral trade between India and Argentina was $5.23 billion, positioning India as Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner and export destination.

Delhi court declares arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari fugitive
New Delhi: A special court here on Saturday declared absconding arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari a fugitive economic offender (FEO), finding force in the Enforcement Directorate 's (ED) case accusing him of money laundering . Significantly, the Court did not find "any substance" in the ground taken by Bhandari's counsel that since the UK High Court (in February) turned down the Indian government's extradition request , Bhandari has a right to reside in the UK. The court rejected the argument of Bhandari's counsel that the failure of India's extradition request in the UK High Court in February gave him the right to reside in the UK. "FEO proceedings are another way of making one come back to India to face trial by coercing him to return by attachment, confiscation of the properties of such fugitive economic offender and proceeds of crime and by dis-entitling such fugitive economic offender from putting forward or defending any civil claim," the order said. Live Events Bhandari "always has an option to return back to India to get the termination of proceedings under FEO Act and to avoid adverse consequences," it clarified. Therefore, when he chooses not to return, "he cannot take the plea of avoiding all the legal consequences including that of Section 14 of the FEO Act," the special court said.
