John Tavares signs 4-year extension with Maple Leafs
Tavares recorded 74 points (38 goals, 36 assists) in 75 games last season with Toronto while playing in the final campaign of a seven-year, $77 million contract.
The 34-year-old Ontario native was set to hit unrestricted free agency as of Tuesday.
"Coming to Toronto 7 years ago has been better than I ever anticipated," Tavares wrote on his foundation's Instagram page. "The challenge of helping bring the Cup back to the many generations of Leafs Fans and Leafs Nation is an incredible opportunity that pushes myself and my teammates everyday. TO is an incredible place to play and it's an honor to pull on the Maple Leaf and wear the blue and white.
"I'm thrilled to announce that I'm committed to four more years! My family and I are excited to continue our journey here in Toronto. The best is yet to come!"
Tavares has totaled 1,114 points (494 goals, 620 assists) in 1,184 career games with the New York Islanders (2009-18) and Maple Leafs. He was selected by the Islanders with the top overall pick of the 2009 NHL Draft.

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Alexander Zverev rallied from a set down to beat defending champion Alexei Popyrin 6-7(8) 6-4 6-3 in Toronto and move into the semi-finals of the Canadian Open on Monday. The 18-year-old, ranked 85th in the world, found herself a break down early in the second set, but won six straight games to become the first Canadian to reach the semi-finals of the Canadian Open since 2019. Islanders sign Matthew Schaefer to entry-level contract
August 5 - Matthew Schaefer, the top selection in the 2025 NHL draft, has signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the New York Islanders, the team announced on Monday. Schaefer was on hand at Citi Field to throw out the ceremonial first pitch in the game between the New York Mets and the visiting Cleveland Guardians. The team announced the signing of the Stoney Creek, Ont., native just before the pregame ceremony. "Feels amazing," Schaefer said at Citi Field. "Obviously, it's something I've wanted to do my whole life and to do it your first year -- there's still a lot of work, but that was my dream and I want to play in the NHL this season. I wanted to really badly. I know there's going to be a lot of hard work that comes with it, but I think I'm ready." The defenseman, who will turn 18 next month, has competed with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League for the past two seasons. He earned first-team all-rookie honors in 2023-24. His 2024-25 OHL campaign came to a halt when he suffered an injured collarbone as a member of Team Canada in the 2025 World Junior Championships in Ottawa. Report: Toronto FC acquiring M Djordje Mihailovic from Rapids
August 4 - Toronto FC are making a splash by acquiring star midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids for an $8 million transfer fee, GiveMeSport reported Monday.
