Tanner McKee reveals how he can help elevate Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' offense

USA Today5 days ago
Now, officially the Eagles' backup QB, Tanner McKee details his value to Jalen Hurts and the offense.
It's hard to remember now when it first became apparent that Tanner McKee had something. It didn't take very long, though. His early Philadelphia Eagles camp practices often felt like more of a showcase than a lesson.
He never seemed uncomfortable during preseason games. He just felt like the second-best passer on the roster, but it wasn't his time yet. Philadelphia had given Marcus Mariota $5 million for a single season and penciled him in as Jalen Hurts' backup.
The Mariota experiment was over after a single season. Surely, McKee would back up Hurts now, right? Nope! The Eagles again brought in their backup from outside the organization.
This time, they banked on Kenny Pickett, but again, they moved on following one year. Pickett was dealt for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and draft compensation.
Philadelphia drafted Kyle McCord this past April. The backup quarterback role, however, clearly belonged to McKee now. It's year three, and year two gave us some on-field tape to grade him on.
He started in the regular-season finale and filled in admirably during another game. The results speak for themselves: a 66.7% completion percentage, 323 passing yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, a QB rating of 117.2, and a QBR of 68.5. It seems that the former Stanford Cardinal star is on his way to success.
Tanner McKee details his expected role as Jalen Hurts' backup in the Eagles' offense.
Another Eagles training camp practice has come and gone. Vic Fangio spoke early. Players spoke after the session. Tanner McKee was among those interviewed.
McKee spoke on his new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He discussed his camp so far and, of course, what role he plays in the relationship between him and the starter, Jalen Hurts.
Don't expect to see McKee much unless Hurts is injured, Philadelphia is comfortably ahead, or the starters are done. This has been Jalen Hurts' team for a while now and will continue to be so.
McKee's presence is a calming influence for Hurts and everyone else. He's the best backup Philadelphia has had since Nick Foles. That doesn't mean he's ready to take on a dynasty in the Super Bowl, but he is better than everything the Eagles have had for a while.

Philadelphia Eagles Star Hit with Sudden Injury Blow

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With the first week of the NFL Preseason approaching for the Philadelphia Eagles, the team is dealing with notable injuries in the wide receiver group. AJ Brown is the latest addition. The star wideout is reportedly dealing with a hamstring injury. While the injury doesn't seem overly concerning at this time, it will be something to monitor as the offseason plays out. After all, hamstring setbacks tend to get tricky. Hamstring injury for A.J. Brown. — Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 3, 2025 Brown has been Jalen Hurts' top wideout since he landed with the Eagles via trade in 2022. Brown started his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans, but was traded following his third season. The Eagles have surely benefited from the presence of Brown, who kicked off his Eagles stint with nearly 1,500 yards and over 10 touchdowns. In 2022, Brown was the top wideout on the NFC Champions, who came up just short against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Two years ago, Brown had another spectacular season with the Eagles, as he caught a career-high 106 passes. He nearly notched his career-high once again, after posting 1,456 yards. He also found the endzone for seven scores in 17 games. A.J. It showed in Jalen Hurts' passing numbers and in Brown's receiving production as well. Dealing with injuries at times, Brown appeared in just 13 games for Philadelphia last year. He caught just 67 passes, which was by far his lowest since joining the Eagles. The star wide receiver still cracked the 1,000-yard mark, but not by much. He reached the endzone for seven touchdowns. Despite a lack of regular-season production, Brown would shine throughout the playoffs. In four games, he produced a playoff career-high 163 yards and scored twice. One of his touchdowns came in the Super Bowl, where the Eagles dominated the Chiefs, getting their revenge from a couple of seasons ago. The chances of Brown getting burn in the preseason were likely always going to be slim this season. Since the 28-year-old is well-established at this stage in his career, he doesn't need the meaningless reps before a long season. Still, the setback is notable. Brown will be a player to keep an eye on in the coming days. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

A.J. Brown out of practice with hamstring injury

The Eagles got DeVonta Smith back on the practice field after he missed time with a back injury, but they have another injury issue to work through at wide receiver. A.J. Brown left Friday's practice early and he is not practicing at all on Sunday. The Eagles say that he is dealing with a hamstring injury. There's no timeline for when Brown might be back, but it's safe to guess that the Eagles will take a cautious approach with the return of an integral player at this point in the calendar. Linebacker Zack Baun also remains out of practice with a back injury while the Eagles say Smith, linebacker Jihaad Campbell (shoulder), safety Andrew Mukuba (shoulder), and edge rusher Nolan Smith (concussion) will be limited participants.
