Few can hold a candle to Jami Gertz's evolution."I get it," the Sixteen Candles alum told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. "It's not your everyday Hollywood actress tale."It's a tale that saw Gertz transition from an '80s film and television star to the owner of an NBA team she purchased with her billionaire husband Tony Ressler. The actress was discovered at age 16 when she attended a talent search and landed a role on the early '80s sitcom Square Pegs costarring Sarah Jessica Parker."I was found at a search, thrown right in, that was it," the 59-year-old recalled on a 2024 episode of Resilience with Richard Cabral, "and I never looked back. It was an usual path."Unusual, but lucrative. "When I was 16, I made more money than my dad," she continued. "That changes the dynamic. That changes a lot of things in your life."

Gertz's career continued to change as she racked up credits on shows like The Facts of Life and Dreams as well as in movies like Sixteen Candles, The Lost Boys and Less Than Zero. And her personal life did too when she crossed paths with Ressler in 1986.As Gertz recalled to The Hollywood Reporter, the two were introduced through her publicist and hung out at a dinner party at Ressler's L.A. apartment. And while the businessman didn't know Gertz from her roles, he did know that he wanted to get to spend more time with her."Everyone thinks I married a rich guy," Gertz continued. "But I made more money—way more money—than Tony when I met him. I paid for our first house. I paid for our first vacation. I married him because I fell in love with him."
They wed in 1989 and continued to make power moves throughout the '90s and early 2000s. For Gertz, this included starring in movies like Jersey Girl, Twister and Gilda Radner: It's Always Something as well as TV shows like Sibs, Still Standing and Ally McBeal—earning an Emmy nomination for her guest role in the latter. As for Ressler, he cofounded Apollo Management in 1990 before launching Ares Management seven years later. Forbes' latest estimates place his net worth around $13.8 billion. However, these weren't their only new ventures. The couple also entered parenthood—they're mom and dad to sons Oliver, Nicholas and Theo—and Gertz opened her own production company Lime Orchard Productions in 2007. Though the company achieved success through the release of its movie A Better Life—a film that earned Demián Bichir an Oscar nomination in 2012—Gertz has admitted it wasn't a profitable business.
Fast-forward to 2015 and Gertz and Ressler entered a new arena—literally—by becoming the owners of the NBA team the Atlanta Hawks, a purchase that, per The Hollywood Reporter, cost $720 million."I was walking in and out of the closet,' Gertz recalled to the publication, noting the space was where Ressler negotiated the deal. "And he looked at me, and I looked at him, and he's like, 'Jami, are we going to do this?' I'm like, 'I don't know. I'm so scared.' And he's like, 'It would be so much fun!' And then we were jumping and screaming, 'Oh my God — we just bought a basketball team!'"While her role as team owner has kept her plenty busy, Gertz has still made time for acting—though her most recent roles including parts in 2017's Difficult People and 2022's I Want You Back. However, she seems content living a more private life.'It just seemed like a natural moment for me to take a break from acting,' Gertz told The Hollywood Reporter. 'It's hard to even say it out loud because I love what I do. It's given me so many beautiful things in my life, taught me so many things about myself and the world around me.'To see more child stars then and now, keep reading.

Erik Menendez returns to prison after hospital stay: report

Erik Menendez, one of the brothers serving a 50 years-to-life sentence for the 1989 murders of his parents in Beverly Hills, has returned to state prison in California after being hospitalized last month for kidney problems, according to a family member. "My dad is out of the hospital and back at the prison, preparing for our upcoming parole hearing,' his stepdaughter Talia Menendez wrote on Instagram stories, TMZ reports. Menendez was temporarily removed from the San Diego-area Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility last month and hospitalized for about a week for what his attorney called a 'serious medical condition.' The treatment included multiple surgeries to remove kidney stones, TMZ reported at the time. Menendez, 54, and his brother Lyle, 57, are both serving lengthy sentences for the 1989 killing of their parents José, a prominent record executive, and Kitty Menendez, in a case that has dominated headlines for decades. In May, the pair's life sentences were reduced to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. They are slated for back-to-back parole hearings on August 21 and 22. Last month, a judge ordered Los Angeles prosecutors to explain why the original murder convictions should not be re-examined, given new evidence that emerged, that could support the brothers' claims they killed their parents over alleged persistent sexual abuse at the hands of their father. The Menendez brothers' first trials ended in hung juries and the second saw the judge exclude evidence including testimony from family members who said they had witnessed or heard about the alleged abuse. Earlier this year, California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered a 'risk assessment' investigation into whether the brothers are fit to re-enter society. The governor could grant the brothers clemency though he has indicated any decision regarding their sentences would not occur until after their parole hearing. The Menendez case has been the subject of media interest, books, films and documentaries for years. Last year, their story was fodder for the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Kim Kardashian visited the brothers in prison that year and has advocated for their release.

Update On Karrion Kross And Scarlett's WWE Contract Status

Karrion Kross is still looking to renew his WWE contract, but has it happened yet? Kross has become one of the more popular WWE Superstars on the RAW brand. Fans continue to push for him to get more TV time, and it looks to be paying off. Kross' feud with Sami Zayn has picked up in recent weeks. However, his contract status has been up in the air. Kross and Scarlett's WWE contracts reportedly expire this summer. In June, Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select) reported that the couple had still not been approached about a contract extension or renewal. Has Karrion Kross re-signed with WWE? According to a new update from Fightful (via Fightful Select), Kross allegedly told other wrestlers that he and Scarlett still have not re-signed with WWE. It was also noted that their contracts run out in August. Fightful notes that WWE sources have kept quiet about Kross's status. However, 'at least six contacts' in the wrestling industry have all said that Kross and Scarlett both said that they had not been approached about a new contract as of last week. Despite the contract situation being uncertain, Kross and Scarlett's future does seem optimistic for a few reasons. Kross has new merchandise, and he's currently engaged in a feud with Zayn on WWE TV. This is normally a sign that a deal is or is close to being done. It was noted that there are still creative plans Kross and Scarlett on WWE TV. It's also more likely that their updated contract status will be revealed when 'the time is right.' Kross is one of the more popular stars in WWE right now, as fans wouldn't let him leave the arena after a recent RAW taping. Kross is a fan-favorite of sorts. Despite that, former WWE Superstar Baron Corbin recently pointed out the 'funky' position that Kross finds himself in.
