Angels place rookie second baseman Christian Moore on the injured list with a sprained left thumb
Moore left the Angels' 8–3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night with the injury. Moore suffered the injury when he dove for Ozzie Albies' ground ball in the sixth inning. Moore's hand bent awkwardly when he hit the ground. Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said he was grateful Moore would not require surgery, though he wouldn't put a timetable on how much time the rookie may miss. 'Anytime you see somebody like him have an injury like that, you fear the worst,' Montgomery said, adding the hope Moore may miss two weeks 'may be looking at the best-case scenario.'
Moore, a 2024 first-round draft pick from Tennessee, was hitting .189 in 53 at-bats following his promotion to the Angels on June 13. Infielder Chad Stevens, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Salt Lake, moved into the starting lineup at second base on Thursday night in his major league debut. 'He's been playing really well,' Montgomery said of Stevens. 'He's done everything he can do to earn this opportunity.' The 26-year-old Stevens was hitting .307 with 14 homers at Salt Lake. The Angels released right-hander Héctor Neris, who had a 7.80 ERA in 23 games.

Freeman broke his left wrist in 2017 after being hit by a pitch with the Atlanta Braves. 'He just doesn't come out of games,' Roberts said. 'And so I didn't know why he was walking toward me. Then hearing him saying that it was his wrist and can't continue, yeah (I was) really worried.' Roberts said the team will follow up with Freeman on Monday before determining when he will play again. Hyeseong Kim replaced Freeman as a pinch-runner, and Miguel Rojas took over at first base the following inning.

Reid said on the eve of camp beginning that he has not been told by the NFL whether Rice will serve a suspension, though it is widely expected. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy acknowledged last week, 'We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter, which remains under review.' With Taylor on the PUP list, the Chiefs will start with Simmons at left tackle and Jaylon Moore – who signed a two-year, 30 million dollar deal in free agency – at right tackle. But it's possible that Moore could push Simmons for the starting job on the left side during training camp in what could be the biggest position battle for the defending AFC champions. 'We evaluate these guys every day,' Reid said. 'Whether it's a light practice or a hard day, they're evaluated and graded and so on. We'll see how it all sorts out.'
