Patti LuPone 'took an instant dislike' to Kevin Kline

Perth Now26-05-2025
Patti LuPone's relationship with Kevin Kline was "painful".
The 76-year-old actress met Kevin, 77, at Juilliard, a performing arts school in New York City, in the 70s, and she wasn't a fan of him at first.
Patti told The New Yorker magazine: "I took an instant dislike to him.
"He looked like Pinocchio to me. He had skinny legs, and he was tall, and I didn't really see the handsomeness."
Despite this, the duo grew closer over time and their on-and-off relationship ultimately lasted for seven years.
Patti now looks back on their romance with a lot of regret, describing it as a "painful" experience.
The actress said: "He was a Lothario. It was a painful relationship.
"I was his girlfriend when he wanted me to be his girlfriend, but, if there was somebody else, he would break up with me and go out with that person. And I, for some reason, stuck it out - until I couldn't stick it out anymore."
Kevin concedes that their relationship was "fraught".
The actor - who has been married to actress Phoebe Cates since 1989 - explained: "We fought all the time.
"In the company, we were known as the Strindbergs."
Patti previously claimed that her turbulent romance with Kevin "exhausted [her] heart".
The 'Driving Miss Daisy' star also described her former partner as a "player".
Patti - who has been married to Matthew Johnston since 1988 - told People back in 2022: "For me that was my first big love. And Kevin was also a player, and it was hard. That was incredibly hard on me. He exhausted my heart."
Patti and Kevin have actually kept in touch with each other since ending their relationship, and the actress now considers them to be "friends".
The award-winning star - who has enjoyed huge success on Broadway and in London's West End - said: "We have found a place where we can actually communicate and be friends. I think we can be friends.
"I don't think we can double date, but I think Kevin and I can at least talk to each other."

The Jonas Brothers' music 'has aged very well'

Nick Jonas thinks The Jonas Brothers' music has "aged very well". The chart-topping pop group - which includes Nick and his brothers, Kevin and Joe Jonas - are currently preparing for their 20th anniversary tour, and Nick loves that the band have evolved with their fans. Speaking to People, he explained: "It's aged very well. It's one of those things where we've looked out and seen the fan base really evolve and change and there's sort of a generational aspect to it now when you think about it. "The people that were our age back when we were teens touring and making music are our age now and they've grown up and they're bringing their kids to the shows, but their parents that brought them when they were in their youth still want to come." Nick, 32, loves seeing how different groups of fans connect to particular songs. The singer - who is married to movie star Priyanka Chopra - said: "It's great to look out there and see such a really interesting mix and to see that the songs they respond to are a reflection of that." The Jonas Brothers announced plans for their JONAS20: Living the Dream Tour earlier this year. The brothers - who have also enjoyed success as solo artists - admitted at the time that they "can't wait" to hit the road in August and perform in front of their loyal fans. They said in a statement at the time: "We're beyond excited to hit the road and celebrate 20 years of music. "Our fans have been with us through every chapter, and this tour is our way of honouring them, the memories we've made, and the ones we'll create together. We can't wait to make this our biggest, most unforgettable tour yet." The band will play 42 dates in the US and Canada on their JONAS20: Living the Dream Tour. The Jonas Brothers will begin the North American tour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on August 10, and the tour will conclude at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut on November 14.

My LGBTQ fans are in a league of their own, says Rita Ora

Rita Ora considers her LGBTQ fans to be "in a league of their own". The 34-year-old pop star has developed a big fan following among the LGBTQ community over the years, and Rita admits that the affection is mutual. The singer - who toured with Kylie Minogue earlier this year - told People: "They're just in a league of their own. "There is so much to learn from the years and history of the constant struggle of being authentically themselves. There's so much to it." Rita - who is married to Hollywood director Taika Waititi - believes her LGBTQ fans really know how to "celebrate individuality". The singer said: "They're amazing and they know just how to have a good time, but they celebrate individuality, creativity. "The conversations they have amongst each other is just full of love. But underneath it all there's always a sense of emotion and vulnerability, and that, for me, wins every time. And the makeup slaps! It's like, nobody knows how to do makeup better than the queens, you know what I mean? It's just the way it is." Meanwhile, Rita recently confessed that she wants to "celebrate [her] sexuality" through her new music. The singer released her latest single, Heat, last month, and Rita admitted that it's a taste of things to come from her. The Hot Right Now hitmaker told People: "The whole theme of this record is really about being instant [and] really direct with my messaging and stripping everything back behind me, production wise." Heat was co-written by Troye Sivan, and Rita feels she has "a lot in common" with the 30-year-old music star. The pop singer also feels that her new music is really reflective of her current mindset. Rita - who released her debut album, Ora, back in 2012 - said: "I love his sexuality and the celebration he has with that. "I was really inspired for me and my womanhood to really kind of celebrate my sexuality, my sexiness and get back into my body, you know? And this really just embodied that."

Tame Impala frontman cryptically teases new music

Kevin Parker has teased a new Tame Impala album. The 39-year-old musician has cryptically suggested that new material from his musical project could be on the way as fans eagerly await a follow-up to the 2020 album The Slow Rush. Kevin has posted a series of photos on Instagram, including one of him in the studio, one containing a progress chart of a track list – many marked with the word 'done' alongside them. The post also included a snap of Parker posing with his wife Stephanie Lawrence, who is pregnant with the couple's second child. He captioned the upload: 'Been busy.' Tame Impala's website also suggests that new music could be on the way after a cryptic update suddenly appeared that altered the site' interface. Intriguingly, the page's source code has also been changed and the message 'iwaitedtiltheendofsummerandiranoutoftime' can be found. Kevin collaborated with Dua Lipa by serving as a producer on her 2024 album Radical Optimism and enjoyed the 'wild' experience of joining the pop star on stage at the Glastonbury Festival last year. He told The Guardian newspaper last year: 'The nicest thing about it was that it was Dua headlining Glastonbury, which is something she has wanted to do since she was a kid. 'I felt like I had a seat in someone's dream that they were living - I was just happy to be a part of it.' Kevin duetted with Dua on Tame Impala's 2015 track The Less I Know the Better although he was puzzled by the Houdini hitmaker's request to join her on stage at first. He recalled: 'I remember just being like, 'Really? Are you sure you want to play my little song during your set of absolute bangers?' 'She was pretty insistent – so after I double-checked with her that she wanted to do it, of course I was in.' Parker immediately bonded with Dua as they worked on the album and he was impressed at the superstar's lack of 'ego'. He explained: 'The energy Dua creates in her creative space is one of no ego – we all noticed there were no huge personalities in the room trying to dominate the process. 'When you speak to other writers, they've all got nightmare experience of people who were too big for the room.'
