Halal, fisheries, education, Gaza discussed in Prabowo meeting

The Sun22-04-2025
JAKARTA: Cooperation in the halal industry, fisheries, higher education, and the issue of Gaza, Palestine were among the matters discussed during Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's courtesy call on President Prabowo Subianto here today.
Ahmad Zahid said both countries had in principle agreed that the halal logo of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) could be used for halal products exported to Indonesia without requiring a new standard operating procedure.
'Malaysia will also recognise Indonesia's halal certification for products exported to Malaysia.
'This is a game changer that we must appreciate due to the commitment shown by industry players, especially as it received endorsement from the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs and during my discussion with Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid was speaking to the media after paying a courtesy call on Prabowo, which lasted about an hour and 45 minutes, at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta today.
Ahmad Zahid said during the meeting, he also proposed that the halal industry forum, to be jointly organised by Malaysia and Indonesia, be held at the regional level, in addition to the intention to establish the ASEAN Halal Council being conveyed to the ASEAN Secretariat for approval by member states.
'The ASEAN Halal Council needs to be established not only to coordinate the issuance of halal certificates but also to make ASEAN a major market for products among ASEAN countries,' he said.
On the issue of fishermen along the maritime borders of both countries, Ahmad Zahid said he and Prabowo agreed that those who crossed into each other's territorial waters should be given a warning first, based on the memorandum of understanding signed in 2012.
'We urge Malaysian fishermen to continue using the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and not to switch it off while in the Straits of Malacca because our authorities will be monitoring their position or location,' he said.
He stressed that this matter should be emphasised by the authorities in both countries to ensure that the good relations between the two nations are maintained.
Both leaders also stressed efforts to promote Malaysian higher education in technical, engineering and professional fields in Indonesia so that more Indonesian students could pursue their studies in Malaysia.
In another development, Ahmad Zahid said he and Prabowo shared the same stance on the Zionist attacks in Gaza, which was for a permanent ceasefire to be implemented and for the entry of humanitarian aid to be facilitated.
'We will jointly call on the international community to unite towards this effort so that reconstruction in Gaza and Palestine can take place,' he said.
Commenting on his official visit, Ahmad Zahid said he was very satisfied as matters beyond the framework of bilateral relations, regional politics and geo-economics, and even international affairs had been discussed.
'We hope there will be follow-through by Wisma Putra and also the Indonesian Foreign Ministry as well as other relevant departments,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid concluded his three-day official visit to the country today and departed from Soekarno Hatta International Airport at 8.19 pm local time (9.19 pm Malaysian time).

Palm falls on weakness in rival oils, profit taking

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Friday, pressured by weaker rival edible oils at the Chicago and Dalian markets and by profit booking, but remained on track for a seventh weekly gain in eight. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid RM22, or 0.54 per cent, to RM4,069 (US$963.08) a metric tonne at the midday break. The contract has risen 1.67 per cent so far this week. Crude palm oil prices were lower, tracking overnight weakness in soybean oil and Dalian palm olein prices, said David Ng, a proprietary trader at Kuala Lumpur-based trading firm Iceberg X Sdn Bhd. "Profit-taking activities after the recent price rally also affected the market," he added. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.92 per cent, while its palm oil contract shed 0.45 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade lost 0.96 per cent. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices were little changed as a solid US job market bolstered the case for the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates on hold, with investors also awaiting clarity on President Donald Trump's plans for tariffs on various countries. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.12 per cent against the US dollar, making the commodity cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies. Malaysia's palm oil inventories likely dropped for the first time in four months in June as production fell unexpectedly while export demand remained robust for the tropical oil, a Reuters survey showed. Palm oil may fall to RM4,047 per tonne as a five-wave cycle from RM3,947 has completed, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

ASTANA: Kazakhstan has expressed interest in boosting tourism ties with Sabah, aiming to attract more Kazakh visitors to Kota Kinabalu and Semporna in the near future. Asean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) Sabah Chapter President Datuk Nordin Ening said the country is also offering unique winter holiday experiences in return, including snow jet-skiing, cable cars, and winter tourism packages. Advertisement Speaking after a recent three-day working visit to Kazakhstan, Nordin noted that existing direct flights between Almaty and Kuala Lumpur are supporting this potential, with AirAsia expected to increase frequency to five weekly flights. He added that Kazakhstan is also inviting Malaysian investors to explore joint ventures in key projects such as conveyor belt manufacturing, mineral waste processing, oil fields, and electric vehicle (EV) production involving Proton. Nordin said Kazakhstan has shown interest in developing Islamic banking, fintech, and student exchange programmes with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and called on Sabah agencies and industry players to pursue these opportunities strategically. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ismail Sabri's former son-in-law's 'friendly loan' bankruptcy sets tongue wagging on ‘elite bankrupts'

THAT celebrity fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie was yesterday (July 3) declared a bankrupt by the Kuala Lumpur High Court over failure to settle a RM5.28 mil 'friendly loan' from an engineering and construction outfit has sparked excitement among Malaysians. In short, 1,001 questions – some insightful while others hilarious – filled cyberspace on the misadventure of the Indonesian who was the former son-in-law of ninth premier Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. For starters, one commenter to a news post on the Malaysiakini Facebook page wondered how a bankrupt can still 'wear coat/suit and tie' to which this elicited cheeky feedback that 'the biggest convicted kleptocrat is also wearing suits to court' and that the person is only 'a bankrupt in name only'. This is considering that bankrupts can still own properties and notable assets like cars or even travel overseas subject to the consent of the Director-General of Insolvency (DGI) (note that the Bankruptcy Act 1966 stipulates that a bankrupt is barred from travelling abroad). Jovian, 39, had married Ismail Sabri's daughter, Nina Sabrina, on Dec 11, 2013 but the (then) oft-dubbed 'power couple' divorced in August 2023. Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri who is Malaysia's PM with the shortest stint helmed the country for eight months from Aug 21, 2021 to Nov 24, 2022. For the uninitiated, Jovian was found by senior assistant registrar Faisal Zulkifli to have committed an act of bankruptcy after allowing a petition filed by creditor Cekap Air Sdn Bhd on Nov 20 last year. In its statement of claim, the company claimed that it had given out the loan which was meant to be repaid within 12 month 'verbally and casually' to Jovian on Feb 25, 2022 on ground that its executive director Max Yong Zhen Wei and Jovian were acquaintances. 'Furthermore, there was no reason for the plaintiff (Cekap Air) to doubt the defendant (Jovian) as the latter had several other businesses and was the (then) son-in-law of former prime minister DS Ismail Sabri,' the statement pointed out. However, the plaintiff claimed that Jovian failed, refused or neglected to make re-payments or had even unjustly enriched when he received the loan without making repayments while causing terrible losses to the defendant. This 'irresponsible' attitude has sparked one interesting observation with one commenter having alluded to the consequences of 'fatal connection' after questioning why 'a Type C building contractor would give out a RM5.28 mil loan to the son-in-law of the PM'. – July 4, 2025 Main image credit: Tatler
