
Oman Air Enhances Fuel Switch Checks on Boeing Fleet
Confirming this in an exclusive interview with Times of Oman, Captain Nasser Al Salmi, Chief Operating Officer of Oman Air, said, 'In line with regulatory guidance, we have conducted extra fuel switch checks on all of our Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft as a precautionary measure and as part of our ongoing commitment to the highest safety standards.'
Oman Air has eight Boeing 787 aircraft and 23 Boeing 737 aircraft.
While Boeing and the United States Federal Aviation Administration have affirmed the safety of the fuel switch locks, several airlines – including Oman Air, Etihad and Singapore Airlines – have opted to take additional precautionary steps in the interest of operational assurance and safety continuity.
India's civil aviation regulator has issued a directive for airlines to conduct precautionary inspections of the fuel switch locking mechanisms on all Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft by July 21. This directive comes in the wake of a recent technical review and supports the industry's focus on continuous safety enhancement.
On Monday, Etihad, the second-largest airline in the United Arab Emirates, urged all its pilots to check the fuel switches on 787 aircraft in its fleet.
India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) preliminary report, released in the early hours of Saturday, said the fuel control switches were found in the 'cutoff' position, triggering a global debate over whether pilot action or mechanical failure caused India's worst single-aircraft aviation disaster.
Fuel switches are crucial components in the heart of an aircraft's cockpit that control the flow of fuel to the engines. The twin-engine Boeing 787, which crashed in Ahmedabad, has one switch for each engine. The switches sit underneath the throttle handles in the cockpit's centre console, positioned where pilots' hands naturally rest during critical flight phases. Physical brackets guard each switch on both sides, making it impossible to accidentally brush against them. A spring-loaded mechanism requires pilots to pull each switch upward against resistance before it can be moved.

"Pleased to announce initiation of negotiations for India-Maldives FTA," Muizzu says
Male: India and Maldives on Friday announced the initiation of negotiations for the launch of a Free Trade Agreement (IMFTA). Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday, announced the beginning of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries during a joint press conference in Male with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Muizzu said, "I am also pleased to announce the initiation of negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the Maldives. India's first hydrogen-powered train coach successfully tested at ICF Chennai: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced that the Indian Railways has successfully tested the country's First hydrogen-powered coach at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. According to the minister's social media X post, the country is working on a 1,200 horsepower hydrogen train, which will help India to place itself amongst the leaders in hydrogen-powered train technology. "First Hydrogen powered coach (Driving Power Car) successfully tested at ICF, Chennai. India is developing 1,200 HP Hydrogen train. This will place India among the leaders in Hydrogen powered train technology," Vaishnaw posted on 'X'. In 2023, Vaishnaw informed Rajya Sabha that Indian Railways has envisaged running 35 Hydrogen trains under "Hydrogen for Heritage" at an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore per train and ground infrastructure of Rs 70 crore per route on various heritage and hill routes. Additionally, the Indian Railways has also awarded a pilot project for retrofitment of a Hydrogen Fuel cell on an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake along with ground infrastructure at the cost of Rs 111.83 crores, which is planned to be run on the Jind -Sonipat section of Northern Railway. The running cost of a Hydrogen fuel-based train is not established in IR scenario. It is estimated that the initial running cost of the Hydrogen fuel train set will be higher, which will subsequently reduce with an increase in the number of trains. Further, the use of Hydrogen as fuel provides larger benefits in the direction of green transportation technology to support zero carbon emission goals as a clean energy source. Last year, in a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation solutions, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, showcased India's advancements in green hydrogen mobility by demonstrating a hydrogen-fuelled bus powered by India's oil PSU Indian Oil to the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Shri Tshering Tobgay and his delegation.

India's rich to get richer, boom in capital markets contributing to this trend: Bernstein Report
New Delhi: India's wealthiest households are set to get even richer, with their growing financial assets creating massive opportunities for wealth management firms. According to a recent report by Bernstein, India's wealth managers are witnessing robust growth, driven by rising demand from the country's uber-rich. These firms, which cater to the top 1 per cent of Indian households, are delivering more than 20 per cent profit growth and 20 per cent return on equity (RoE). It stated "India's uber-rich are only going to get richer. The top 1 per cent households (the uber-rich) in India control approx. USD 11.6 Tn in total assets, of which approx. USD 2.7 Tn are in liquid financial assets that wealth managers can service". The report highlighted that these liquid assets include bank deposits and non-promoter equity holdings. Indian households are gradually shifting more of their incremental savings and wealth into financial assets, boosting the addressable market for wealth managers. The boom in India's capital markets is also contributing to this trend. The ultra-rich are converting their illiquid promoter holdings into liquid financial wealth through IPOs, stake sales, and block deals. The report stated "The uber-rich are cashing in on the capital market boom, converting illiquid promoter holdings to liquid financial wealth through IPOs, stake sales and blocks". At the same time, a new class of wealthy individuals is emerging from the startup ecosystem, including founders and early employees, further expanding the base of high-net-worth individuals (HNIs). This growing cohort of the uber-rich is increasingly seeking professional advice to manage their expanding financial portfolios. However, the advisory market is still largely dominated by self-managed funds, unorganized players, and traditional banks. Specialized wealth managers currently hold only an 11 per cent share in the USD 2.7 trillion liquid financial asset pool. The report noted that these specialized players are well-positioned to grow due to their comprehensive product offerings and personalized services delivered by experienced relationship managers. The report expects these firms to grow their assets under management (AuM) by 20-25 per cent in the near term, and at a compounded rate of 18-20 per cent over the next decade. This growth will be driven both by the increase in the liquid asset pool of the ultra-rich, projected to grow by 13 per cent annually, and a gain in market share by wealth managers, expected to rise from 11 to 17 per cent. Overall, the rich individuals of the country will continue to rise and with that the AuM of specialized wealth managers is set to grow from the current USD 300 billion to USD 1.6 trillion over the next decade.
