Oman Air Enhances Fuel Switch Checks on Boeing Fleet

Times of Oman6 days ago
Muscat: National carrier Oman Air confirmed that it has carried out precautionary checks on the fuel switch mechanisms on its Boeing 787 and 737 fleet.
Confirming this in an exclusive interview with Times of Oman, Captain Nasser Al Salmi, Chief Operating Officer of Oman Air, said, 'In line with regulatory guidance, we have conducted extra fuel switch checks on all of our Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft as a precautionary measure and as part of our ongoing commitment to the highest safety standards.'
Oman Air has eight Boeing 787 aircraft and 23 Boeing 737 aircraft.
While Boeing and the United States Federal Aviation Administration have affirmed the safety of the fuel switch locks, several airlines – including Oman Air, Etihad and Singapore Airlines – have opted to take additional precautionary steps in the interest of operational assurance and safety continuity.
India's civil aviation regulator has issued a directive for airlines to conduct precautionary inspections of the fuel switch locking mechanisms on all Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft by July 21. This directive comes in the wake of a recent technical review and supports the industry's focus on continuous safety enhancement.
On Monday, Etihad, the second-largest airline in the United Arab Emirates, urged all its pilots to check the fuel switches on 787 aircraft in its fleet.
India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) preliminary report, released in the early hours of Saturday, said the fuel control switches were found in the 'cutoff' position, triggering a global debate over whether pilot action or mechanical failure caused India's worst single-aircraft aviation disaster.
Fuel switches are crucial components in the heart of an aircraft's cockpit that control the flow of fuel to the engines. The twin-engine Boeing 787, which crashed in Ahmedabad, has one switch for each engine. The switches sit underneath the throttle handles in the cockpit's centre console, positioned where pilots' hands naturally rest during critical flight phases. Physical brackets guard each switch on both sides, making it impossible to accidentally brush against them. A spring-loaded mechanism requires pilots to pull each switch upward against resistance before it can be moved.

Indian automobile industry welcomes landmark India-UK Free Trade Agreement

New Delhi: The Indian automobile industry has warmly welcomed the recently signed India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), terming it as a landmark and transformative development in the global economic landscape. Commenting on the agreement, Anish Shah, Group CEO & MD, Mahindra Group said, "It's not just a win for trade, but a blueprint for a modern, values-led partnership that puts innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth at the heart of global collaboration." Expressing Mahindra's strong support, Shah said, "At Mahindra, we believe deeply in the power of such cross-border partnerships to unlock economic potential, create high-quality jobs, and accelerate progress in future-facing sectors from green mobility and clean energy to digital technologies and advanced manufacturing." The much-awaited landmark India-UK Free Trade Agreement was signed on Thursday, in the presence of Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Keir Starmer, providing greater access to goods and services between the two countries. Shailesh Chandra, President of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Managing Director- Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, echoed industry-wide optimism, "SIAM remains committed to working closely with the Government of India to ensure the benefits of the agreement translate into greater growth, global competitiveness, and technological progress for the Indian automotive industry." He further emphasised the broader significance of the deal and said, "We view this agreement as part of a wider strategic engagement and believe it opens new avenues for collaboration and opportunity with a key global partner." Under FTA, India has opened a Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) for passenger cars from the UK. For large-engine petrol cars above 3000 cc and diesel cars over 2500 cc, India has committed to lower the current 100 per cent + customs duty to 10 per cent in a phased manner in over 15 years, within a quota starting at 10,000 units and rising to 19,000 units over five years. For mid-sized cars (1500-2500 cc diesel / up to 3000 cc petrol), a 50 per cent in-quota duty applies initially, falling to 10 per cent by year five. Small cars under 1500 cc follow a similar tariff reduction path with a growing quota. These in-quota vehicles enjoy sharply reduced duties, while out-of-quota imports still face tariffs ranging from 95 per cent to 50 per cent, depending on vehicle size and year. The TRQ marks a major policy shift, especially as India has long used high tariffs to protect its domestic automotive industry. By year five, up to 37,000 UK-built ICE vehicles could enter India annually at just 10 per cent duty--far below the current base rate of 110 per cent. This creates a preferential entry path for high-end British brands such as Jaguar and Land Rover, both owned by Tata Motors, but also for other UK-based exports.

Oman Air sees growth in passengers from direct flights

Muscat - Oman Air has achieved an unprecedented increase of more than three times the number of passengers on direct flights, increasing from 75,000 passengers in June 2024 to 200,000 passengers in June 2025. Passengers arriving directly in the Sultanate of Oman accounted for 58 percent of Oman Air's total passenger traffic. Mike Rutter, Chief Commercial Officer, Oman Air, said that this growth reflects the success of the company's strategy to increase passenger numbers via direct flights through careful route planning and targeted marketing campaigns. He emphasized that this approach enhances the national carrier's financial performance and enables it to open new destinations on a sustainable basis. He said that Oman Air continues to focus on making travel to the Sultanate of Oman smoother and more attractive for tourists. He stressed that Oman Air is investing in expanding its network of destinations and modernizing its fleet, including the Amsterdam route, which opens new horizons for the European market, in addition to resuming double daily flights to London starting next October.
