Pearly-Thinaah stun arch rivals Matsuyama-Shida to enter Japan Open final

Focus Malaysia19-07-2025
MALAYSIA'S top women's doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M Thinaah, finally broke their losing streak against Japan's world number two pair, Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida, to reach the Japan Open final.
Ranked third in the world, Pearly-Thinaah won convincingly in straight sets, 21-13, 21-11, in just 36 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Previously, they had lost 13 out of 14 encounters with the Japanese pair, including their last seven meetings.
This marks their fourth final this season, with their previous title win at the Thailand Open.
In tomorrow's final, they will face either China's world number one pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning or Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian. A win would make them the first Malaysian women's pair to claim the Japan Open title since its inception in 1982.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's top mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, failed to reach their first Super 750 final after losing to China's Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin in straight sets, 12-21, 16-21. — July 19, 2025

Wushu exponent Yong Xin wins Asian junior title, aims for Youth Olympics debut

Malaysian wushu exponent Kwan Yong Xin PETALING JAYA: Kwan Yong Xin is staking a strong claim to get onto the Youth Olympics stage after pulling off the biggest win of her young career. The 17-year-old delivered a pleasant surprise by winning gold for Malaysia in the Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Jiangyin, China, yesterday. Yong Xin danced her way to the gold with 9.426 points in the girls' 16-18 taijijian (taiji sword) event. Singapore and Vietnam took silver (9.333) and bronze (9.316) respectively. Yong Xin had narrowly missed gold in the taijiquan event the day before, scoring 9.356 to settle for silver behind China's winner (9.420). Although Yong Xin was only a silver medallist for the Federal Territories behind national exponent Mandy Cebelle Chen of Selangor at the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) last year, she is now a champion on the Asian junior stage. She was delighted to achieve this milestone ahead of wushu's highly anticipated debut as a medal sport at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. Malaysia enjoyed a medal rush in the last two days with five more silvers from Lee Ronn in boys' 14-15 changquan (9.270), Lee Cheng Wei in girls' 16-18 changquan (9.426), Ong Wei Bin in boys' 16-18 changquan (9.433), Bryan Wee in boys' 13 and under daoshu (9.073) and Logan Lim in boys 13 and under nangun (9.036).

Pandelela pulls out with shoulder pain at Singapore Worlds

SINGAPORE: A recurring shoulder injury proved costly for Pandelela Rinong, forcing her and partner Lee Yiat Qing to withdraw halfway through their women's 10m platform synchro routine at the World Aquatics Championships on Monday. The Malaysian pair completed just two of five dives, scoring 87 points, before pulling out during the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Pandelela revealed that the injury, sustained earlier this month, flared up during the warm-up session. "After two dives, we decided to withdraw for safety reasons," she wrote on Facebook. "Thank you, especially to those who came to the venue to support us." It was a double setback for Malaysia, as Nurqayyum Nazmi Nazim-Yong Rui Jie also failed to progress in the men's 3m springboard synchro. The pair finished 21st out of 26 pairs, with a total of 302.76 points, well outside the top-eight cut-off required for the final. - Bernama

Selangor coach tells players 'to run, not walk'

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a football match that left Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi telling his players not to walk, but run. There was little action and no goals to see as Selangor and Asia Warriors, led by Japanese legend Keisuke Honda, settled for a zero-zero draw in a friendly at the MBPJ Stadium on Sunday. "The result was not good enough. I'm not happy. I'm completely not happy," said Japanese Kinoshi who was visibly frustrated at Selangor's lack of tempo and intensity. "We must improve our attack and show determination. Don't walk, run more, penetrate more," he added. Though there wasn't a single goal to see, for Kinoshi the match is less about the scoreline and more about building a cohesive team for the new M-League season. Kinoshi tested nearly every Selangor player available, from the newly signed Zach Clough to regulars like Alvin Fortes. The Red Giants dominated territory, but lacked sharpness in the final third agianst the Asia Warriors, a team filled with retired internationals. Honda, 39, who had played for AC Milan, said: "It was a difficult game for us, but Selangor have younger and better quality players. "Still, we defended well, didn't give them space or time, and kept the score at 0-0. That was the plan."
