Silver hits record Rs 1.11 lakh/kg in India: What's fueling the rush to safe haven?

Economic Times11-07-2025
Silver prices in India surged to an all-time high on Friday, breaching Rs 1.11 lakh per kilogram in the spot market as traders ramped up safe-haven buying amid mounting global trade tensions and rising expectations of a dovish tilt from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
ADVERTISEMENT On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), silver futures crossed Rs 1.10 lakh per kilogram in early trade, while in the physical spot market, silver traded at Rs 111 per gram, or Rs 1,11,000 per kilogram, the highest ever recorded in India.
The rally followed a second straight session of gains for precious metals globally, with spot silver rising 0.4% to $37.19 per ounce in international markets, per Reuters.
The surge in the grey metal prices comes on the heels of escalating trade uncertainty after U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs. 'Gold and silver prices rose on Thursday, marking a second consecutive session of gains as investors sought safety amid mounting trade tensions and fresh policy risks,' said Rahul Kalantri, Vice President, Commodities at Mehta Equities.Trump unveiled a steep 35% tariff on Canadian imports effective August 1, and signaled new blanket tariffs of 15–20% on most other trading partners. 'Trump's push for a massive 300 basis-point Fed rate cut fueled speculation of a dovish central bank shift, raising concerns about future inflation,' Kalantri said.On Thursday, silver September futures on the MCX settled at Rs 1,09,123 per kilogram, up 1.73%. Gold August futures also gained 0.24%, closing at Rs 96,691 per 10 grams.
ADVERTISEMENT 'Gold and silver gained amid the U.S. President's uncertain trade policies, which increased uncertainty in the global financial markets,' the research desk at Prithvifinmart Commodity Research said, adding that safe-haven flows had intensified. Trump's statements about imposing 50% tariffs on copper imports and Brazil, as well as an additional 10% levy on BRICS nations, have further dented sentiment.
Silver also breached a key resistance level of $37 per troy ounce in the international markets. 'Silver has support at $36.85-36.60 while resistance is at $37.40-37.55,' Kalantri noted. In rupee terms, silver faces resistance at Rs 1,09,950–1,10,700, levels it decisively broke through on Friday.
ADVERTISEMENT 'Trump's tariff uncertainty and weakness in the global equity markets could continue to push precious metals up,' said Manoj Kumar Jain of Prithvifinmart Commodity Research.Jain expects continued volatility in bullion due to fluctuations in the dollar index and trade policy risks. 'We expect gold and silver prices to remain volatile in today's session amid volatility in the dollar index and U.S. trade tariff uncertainty but gold prices could hold its support level of $3,280 per troy ounce and silver prices could also hold $36.40 per troy ounce levels on a weekly closing basis,' he said.

As global investors react to a rapidly shifting macro environment, silver's status as a hedge against both inflation and geopolitical risk appears firmly in play, propelling the metal to historic highs on Indian soil.

'Substantial damage, submission': Germany, France react to Trump's 'huge deal' with EU

A new trade deal between EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump has drawn sharp criticism from France and Germany, with leaders warning it could hurt Europe's economy and undermine the bloc's independence read more German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron hold talks in the library of the Villa Borsig, guesthouse of the German Foreign Ministry, in Berlin. AFP Leaders of Europe's two largest economies, France and Germany, have voiced strong criticism of the new trade deal reached between EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned the agreement would 'substantially damage' the country's economy, while French Prime Minister François Bayrou said it amounted to 'submission'. The overall reaction across the EU has been gloomy, though some member states conceded that the deal, despite being unbalanced, was a necessary compromise to avoid a full-blown trade war. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Under the agreement, a 15% tariff will be imposed on most EU exports to the US—significantly lower than the 30% initially threatened by Trump, in exchange for Europe increasing imports of American energy and cutting duties on certain US goods. EU chief says it is a 'huge deal' Following private talks at Trump's Turnberry golf course in Scotland, Ursula von der Leyen called the agreement a 'huge deal', while President Trump said it would bring the US and EU 'closer together'. The deal still requires approval from all 27 EU member states, each with differing economic priorities and varying reliance on exports to the US. Although no country has indicated an intention to block it, there was little celebration among European leaders. Chancellor Merz warned that both the US and EU economies would likely suffer negative impacts. However, he acknowledged the Brussels negotiating team had done all it could when facing a US president determined to reshape global trade relationships. Bayrou took aim at the agreement, writing on X: 'It is a dark day when an alliance of free peoples, brought together to affirm their common values and to defend their common interests, resigns itself to submission.'

US will change visa interview policy from September 2

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills Renewal of US work and student visas is facing yet another roadblock, as the Trump administration is set to eliminate the interview waiver provision effective September 2. This is expected to increase interview wait time, impacting many companies that employ workers on H-1B visas as well as students, say immigration US Department of State on July 25 announced that all non-immigrant visa applicants barring B1/B2 categories will require in-person interview. The requirement will also cover the previously excluded category of children below 14 years of age and elderly applicants aged over 79 years. "With the interview waiver, applicants were able to get an appointment in less than a month to drop the documents," said Gnanamookan Senthurjothi, founder of immigration platform Visa Code. "But the process will further increase (now) and with the current job scenario, this will impact highly skilled worker jobs, similar to what is playing out for students," he is also not much clarity on interviews scheduled after September 2. Many Indians have scheduled appointments in India for H-1B renewals with the interview waiver after September 2 for their families, which is now in a limbo, Senthurjothi said. "It is not clear if they need to book a new appointment."Before Covid-19, interview waivers were restricted to certain visa categories or people. After the pandemic, the US expanded the scope of waivers to manage visa application backlogs. The difference between then and now is the increasing scrutiny around visa issuance and Raman, country head, India & GCC Practice Team, Davies & Associates, said the level of scrutiny has increased not just at the consulate level but also at port of entry, where multiple verifications are done. Immigration experts are also seeing increasing demand for biometrics from H-1B workers and requests for evidence (RFEs) related to workers' arrest records."Following the biometrics appointment, depending on the individual's circumstances, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) may issue another RFE related to the beneficiary's arrest record," said Joel Yanovich, immigration attorney at Murthy Law Firm.
