Junior Springboks: Team selection, kick-off time

For the opening round of the U20 Rugby Championship, Junior Springboks head coach Kevin Foote has selected an exciting match-23 for the clash with the Pumitas, who gave their SA U20 counterparts a tough time last year in the inaugural tournament staged in Australia.
The Junior Bok coach said that the eagerness and competition amongst squad members made selection a tough exercise.
'Our squad selection for this first game was difficult because there are so many talented guys, which speaks volumes about our depth,' said Foote.
'We've decided on a more settled pack – there's only one change in the pack from our last training match against Hamilton's, with our captain Riley Norton coming into the starting lineup after a slight injury.'
The Junior Bok starting fifteen includes the likes of Norton, Wandile Mlaba, a member of last year's Junior Bok squad, and the 2024 SA Schools and SA U18 captain Sethu Mnebelele, amongst the forwards.
The backs feature exciting players such as Blitzbok Gino Cupido and Cheswill Jooste on the wings and Kyle Smith at flyhalf. Utility forward Batho Hlekani and outside back JC Mars are amongst the replacements who are expected to make an impact off the bench.
15 Gilermo Mentoe, 14 Cheswill Jooste, 13 Demitre Erasmus, 12 Albie Bester, 11 Gino Cupido, 10 Kyle Smith, 9 Haashim Pead, 8 Wandile Mlaba, 7 Matt Romao, 6 Thando Biyela, 5 JJ Theron, 4 Riley Norton (c), 3 Simphiwe Ngobese, 2 Sethu Mnebelele, 1 Oliver Reid.
Bench: 16 Juandre Erasmus, 17 Ranon Fouche, 18 JD Erasmus, 19 Morne Visser, 20 Batho Hlekani, 21 Ceano Everson, 22 Vusi Moyo, 23 JC Mars.

Lions and Sharks in tug-of-war over Junior Springbok star Batho Hlekani

A tug-of-war is brewing between the Sharks and the Lions over the services of world champion Junior Springbok Batho Hlekani, with the Durban franchise intent on keeping their prized loose forward under contract until the end of the year. The 20-year-old Hlekani, who was a standout performer for the Junior Boks at the recent World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy, has been the subject of significant interest following his impressive displays. The hard-running forward played a pivotal role in South Africa's first World Championship win since 2012 and has since earned an invite to the senior Springbok squad for a two-week training camp in Johannesburg. The Lions have made a push to bring Hlekani into their squad sooner rather than later, a move prompted by the season-ending injury of flanker Izan Esterhuizen. Despite Hlekani's recent signing with the Lions, which saw a reversal of the trend of players moving from the Lions to the Sharks, the latter are determined to keep him for the remainder of his contract. Hlekani, who hails from Zwide in the Eastern Cape (the same township as Springbok captain Siya Kolisi), was a key player in the Sharks' Currie Cup triumph last season. His stellar performances earned him a place in the Sharks' squad for the current Currie Cup season, making him an important asset as the team continues to challenge for silverware. Sharks Chief Operating Officer Novashni Chetty issued a clear statement on Thursday regarding Hlekani's contract situation, confirming the player is contracted to the franchise until 31 December. 'Batho is contracted to us until 31 December 2025,' Chetty said, signaling that the Sharks are not willing to release the talented flanker before his contract expires. Despite the Lions' urgency to secure Hlekani, the Sharks remain resolute in keeping him, at least for the remainder of the Currie Cup season. The Lions, seeking to boost their squad with youthful talent, have already made moves to strengthen their ranks with several Junior Boks and up-and-coming players, including Haashim Pead, Ethan Adams, and Sherwin Buys, among others. Hlekani's role in the Junior Boks' World Championship victory was pivotal, especially as he captained the team in their final Pool A match against Scotland. The Sharks have confirmed that Hlekani will not be available for their upcoming Currie Cup fixture (against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld) as he continues with the Springboks' commitments. Sharks coach JP Pietersen, speaking after his team's heavy 46-5 loss to the Lions in their first-round Currie Cup clash, acknowledged Hlekani's absence. 'Batho won't be available… he will be in the Springbok set-up,' Pietersen said, indicating that the Junior Bok star is likely to join the senior squad once his U20 commitments conclude. The Lions, meanwhile, remain eager to bring Hlekani into their fold as soon as possible. Lions coach Mzwakhe Nkosi has expressed the hope of securing Hlekani's services following his Springbok duties. 'We are trying to get Batho to join ASAP, hopefully after his Springbok commitments,' Nkosi said, emphasising the Lions' need to bolster their squad following Esterhuizen's injury. With both teams now eyeing the talented flanker, it's clear that a battle over Hlekani's future is far from over. The Sharks are committed to honoring their contract with the player, but the Lions are determined to fast-track the acquisition of the Junior Bok star, adding further intrigue to the ongoing Currie Cup competition. Rudy Paige: Haashim Pead will be a Springbok . . . sooner rather than later

Scrumhalf Haashim Pead, who starred for the Junior Boks at the World Rugby U20 Championship, is currently training with the Springboks. Image: Maurilio Boldrini / World Rugby Former Springboks scrumhalf Rudy Paige says Junior Springboks star Haashim Pead has all the attributes to become a star for the Springboks following his incredible performances at the World Rugby Under-20 World Championships. Pead won the Player of the Tournament award after the Junior Boks beat their New Zealand counterparts in the final to lift the trophy for the first time since 2012. The speedy No 9 scored six tries and assisted four during the tournament. He also surpassed France star Antoine Dupont's record for running metres by a scrumhalf at the tournament, racking up 232m from 15 carries during the pool stages. 'When I met him, I really liked how he sees the game and his hunger to evolve as a player and go to bigger heights,' Paige said, during an event hosted by Generation Schools in Cape Town on Wednesday. 'On the field, he ticks all the boxes. His fundamentals are really good and he has got the pace. But he also has the instincts and his feel for the game is superb. Video Player is loading. Pead is currently in camp with the Springboks ahead of their home Rugby Championship matches against Australia. He and fellow Junior Boks, flank Bathobele Hlekani and outside centre Cheswill Jooste, were invited to see first hand how the Boks prepare for a big tournament. Paige, who played 13 Test matches for the Springboks and played in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, says Pead's involvement in the Bok camp is massive for his development, as he will be able to see first-hand what it takes to play for the Springboks. 'I always say you learn a lot through the ears and the eyes. He is going to learn a lot from people like Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach, what they do on a day-to-day basis, what they do post training, their habits and what type of questions they ask in team meetings,' the former Bulls scrumhalf said. 'I think being there is going to put him and the others ahead of their peers. It's going to be three amazing weeks for them with the Boks. 'He still has a lot to learn and needs to play in big competitions such as the United Rugby Championship to develop his game even more. But we are going to see Haashim Pead in a Springbok jersey sooner rather than later. He has all the capabilities to make it.' Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus just week said Pead and other two Junior Boks have fitted in nicely. While he doesn't foresee them playing any Test matches this year, the Bok mentor is hoping that the exposure will give them the desire and hunger to improve their game and push for a senior call-up. 'The coaches will be involved in the team until 2027, so it's important for us to continue developing our depth and ensuring that we have at least three players to pick from in each position,' Erasmus said. 'We don't see the Young Guns playing Test matches this year, but exposing them to this environment and allowing them to participate in all our boardroom and field sessions is great for them to learn. 'They've fitted in well and they appear to be enjoying it, while it's also good for the more experienced players to see the talent that is coming through the ranks.' The Springboks start their Rugby Championship campaign against the Wallabies at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on August 16. The Boks and Aussies will then travel to Cape Town for their second match a week later on August 23.

Proteas snatch defeat from jaws of victory as Black Caps claim Tri-Series crown in Harare

The Proteas fell agonisingly short in the T20I Tri-Series final against the New Zealand in Harare on Saturday. Picture: Zimbabwe Cricket In a thrilling encounter at Harare, New Zealand clinched the Tri-series T20 final against South Africa by a mere three runs on Saturday. Winning the toss, the Proteas opted to bowl first, a decision that initially seemed promising but ultimately proved to be a challenging one. The Kiwis started their innings with a strong foundation as their top three batters contributed substantially to a formidable total of 180 runs. Devon Conway and Tim Seifert forged an effective partnership that saw them set the pace early on. Conway's innings unfolded impressively, before he fell to Lungi Ngidi for a well-played 47 off 31 balls. Seifert, also with a notable contribution of 30 runs from 28 balls, was dismissed in the 9th over, leaving the Proteas desperate for breakthroughs. In the midst of a growing Kiwi momentum, Rachin Ravindra emerged as the game-changer. He wreaked havoc on the Proteas with a blistering 47 runs from just 27 deliveries, boasting a strike rate of 174.
