Stan Sport buys rights to air English Premier League

The Advertiser5 hours ago

English Premier League and FA Cup games will be shown on Stan Sport after the streaming service bought the broadcast rights in a $20 million deal.
Optus Sport has broadcast games from one of the world's biggest soccer leagues for the past nine years in Australia but will shut down on August 1 following the buyout.
Stan Sport, which is owned by Nine, will begin streaming content from the 2025-26 season in August.
Stan is paying Optus Sport an upfront fee of $20 million and making a contribution toward the first payment for the next Premier League rights cycle.
"This marks a step change in Nine's digital growth strategy," Nine CEO Matt Stanton said.
"The Premier League is the most-watched football league on the planet and alongside the Emirates FA Cup, this acquisition reinforces Nine's position as the home of sport in Australia.
"We are proud to deliver these iconic competitions to Australian audiences."
The agreement includes the rights to Japan's J.League and the US National Women's Soccer League.
Nine said it would communicate with Optus Sport customers to ensure a seamless transition to Stan Sport.
"It's the end of an unforgettable era here at Optus Sport we are excited for the future of football in Australia," Optus Sport said on its website.

Car aiming ‘to replace Tesla'

Don't miss out on the headlines from On the Road. Followed categories will be added to My News. When Tesla first landed in Australia, many Aussies didn't quite understand what it was but they were captivated by its futuristic design – and they wanted it. At the recent Melbourne International EV Show, News Corp had an exclusive look at a new EV that's provoking that same reaction – XPeng P7+. The P7+ is the latest electric sedan from China and it could be the first to challenge the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal, and fill the void left by the discontinued Tesla Model S. Unveiled by TrueEV, XPeng's exclusive Australian importer and distributor, the P7+ hasn't been confirmed for local sale yet. MORE: Tesla reveals major Robotaxi move XPeng P7+ executive electric sedan uses advanced 'AI-define' technology. Picture: Supplied However, TrueEV founder Jason Clarke said the vehicle is under serious evaluation for the Australian market. 'We have to do testing, we know the price point is going to be so much lower, we have to recommend that to XPeng,' he said. Clarke said the absence of the Tesla Model S is 'disappointing' for consumers but the P7+ could be the alternative. 'The P7+ could take the spot as an executive sedan, it fills the void left by the Tesla Model S, which was priced $200,000 plus,' he said. MORE: Aussies 'not ready' for advanced driver tech X SUBSCRIBER ONLY Clarke explained if approved, pricing would likely fall below AUD $100,000. Measuring 5068mm in length with a 3000mm wheelbase, the P7+ is larger than its rivals the BYD Seal and Tesla Model 3. It feels luxurious as if it was made for executives and families. But what sets the P7+ apart is its advanced 'AI-defined' technology which assists with driving and the overall cockpit experience. The car continuously monitors battery usage, drive behaviour, environment, adapting its performance in real time to maximum both range and longevity. The P7+ uses a single rear-mounted motor producing up to 230kW drawing power from a 74.9 LFP battery from EVE Engery Co. The Tesla Model S has been discontinued in Australia. Picture: AP Range is officially rated between 580km and 610km (WLTP) which is expected for a family car these days. XPeng claims 10-80 per cent DC fast charging in just 12 minutes on 800V infrastructure, or closer to 20 minutes using current Australian networks. Inside, the cabin features a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8295P chip which controls the X-GPT smart cockpit. There's also an 8-inch rear-seat touchscreen, rear seat heating, ventilation and massage, air purifiers in the glovebox, and dual 50W wireless charges. MORE: The end of travel as we know it XPeng P7+ executive electric sedan is long at 5068mm. Picture: Supplied A panoramic roof with integrated privacy tint adds light and feels seclusive. Boot space is rated at 725L, expanding to 2221L with rear seats folded. There's no spare tyre but a repair kit included. The XPeng P7+ is a bold bet, a sleek and futuristic, tech-loaded executive EV that brings something fresh to Australia. If confirmed for sale locally, this will be one to watch. ASX nails 10pc financial year gain

The Australian sharemarket continued its run higher during Monday's trading and has now had its best financial year in the last four. The benchmark ASX 200 index gained 28.10 points or 0.33 per cent to finish Monday's trading at 8,542.30. The broader All Ordinaries also closed higher up 29.40 points or 0.34 per cent to 8,773.00. The Australian dollar also reached its highest point against the US dollar since November 2024, although this was largely due to the US dollar selling off. Australia's dollar is now buying 65.36 US cents. ASX rises on the final day of trading for the financial year. Picture Newswire/ Gaye Gerard. Credit: News Corp Australia On an overall strong day ten of the 11 sectors finished in the green, with just the materials sector being a drag on the market. Monday's gains helped the ASX gain more than 10 per cent for the financial year, for the best 12-months since 2021. The gains were led by the healthcare sector with CSL jumping 2.19 per cent to $239.48, while Sigma Healthcare rose 1.36 per cent to $2.99 and Pro Medicus finished in the green up 1.60 per cent to $285.08. The consumer discretionary stocks also helped drag the index higher with Wesfarmers up 0.74 per cent to $84.75, while JB Hi FI gained 1.61 per cent to $110.35 and The Lottery Corporation gained 0.76 per cent to $5.27. Despite a lift in iron ore prices on Friday, the big miners struggled again on Monday. BHP slumped 2.08 per cent to $36.75, while Rio Tinto slumped 1.69 per cent to $107.13 and Fortescue dropped 1.16 per cent to $15.28. The material sector continued to be a drag on the markets. Picture Newswire/ Gaye Gerard. Credit: News Corp Australia IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said today's end of financial year trading did not finish with the usual bang of previous years. 'It certainly wasn't a traditional whiz bang fireworks to end the financial year, ' Mr Sycamore told Newswire. 'Given the fact the market was sitting near record highs the market didn't need to get an extra little shove into the sign-off'. Mr Sycamore said usually the end of the financial year comes with a lot of 'window dressing' to close out the year. 'It has had a pretty impressive recovery from its April lows and I think for that reason there was a willingness from participants to sit back and let it do its thing.' In company news embattled casino Star Entertainment Group told the market on Monday its joint venture partnership in the mammoth Queen's Wharf precinct had walked away from an agreement struck in March to take over Star's stake in the complex. Shares slumped 6.9 per cent to $0.14 in the back of this announcement. Shares in James Hardie soared 7.1 per cent to $41.70 after the business shifted its primary listing to the New York Stock Exchange. Defence company DroneShield slumped 4.209 points to $2.28 despite the business announcing a new $9.7m contract with an unnamed defence customer in Latin America.

Affordable fuel, no shortages: Bowen's domestic reservation threat for gas industry

East coast gas producers may be hit with a first-ever reservation scheme to boost crucial supplies of the fuel, the Albanese government has declared, as the consumer watchdog warns the nation's eastern states may suffer a shortfall by the end of the year. Energy Minister Chris Bowen on Monday announced a wide-ranging review of the gas market to report by the end of the year, which he said would 'ensure Australian gas is available to Australian users at reasonable prices'. 'That's a reasonable request by the Australian people and one that we will continue to work to deliver,' Bowen said. Former opposition leader Peter Dutton shocked the gas industry when he released a plan to impose a reservation on LNG exporters before the May election. His policy was to charge companies for uncontracted gas supplies shipped overseas instead of being kept in Australia. Bowen ridiculed Dutton's plan at the time as a 'dot point in a press release', while on Monday he described his review as a 'very substantial, methodical process'. Loading The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission released its six-monthly gas report on Monday, which once again found that ongoing structural supply shortfalls would hit in 2028. It also warned that the supply balance had 'deteriorated' since the end of last year and shortages could bite by December and throughout 2026 unless the east coast gas exporters in Queensland agreed to sell into NSW and Victoria, rather than exporting it to Asia in the form of liquified natural gas (LNG). Prices had fallen slightly, but remain elevated since the 2022 global energy shock caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Homes and businesses on the east coast are running short of gas for three reasons: The massive onshore fields in Queensland export a significant amount of their production to Asia; the pipeline that connects these fields to NSW and Victoria is already running at full capacity and; the 50-year-old gas fields in Bass Strait are fast running out of reserves, with barely any new supply projects to replace them.
