Blockstream Shares Key Strategic Update on Growth & Expansion in 2025

MONTREAL, Quebec--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr 30, 2025--
Blockstream, the global leader in Bitcoin-powered financial infrastructure, has shared a key strategic update today highlighting several recent milestones, as the company looks to unveil several new innovations to expand Bitcoin's role in institutional finance and everyday user experience later this year.
As announced previously, Blockstream raised $210 million in a financing round led by Fulgur Ventures in October 2024, and has already significantly expanded development and investment across its infrastructure and software offerings in 2025.
'We are at a pivotal moment for Bitcoin's growth,' said Blockstream Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Adam Back . 'Spot ETFs have opened the floodgates, institutions are rushing to engage with Bitcoin, and individual interest is accelerating. As we look ahead, we will continue to explore ways to deliver the greatest impact with a focus on building the financial rails and infrastructure to help secure Bitcoin's success long term.'
As part of this broader expansion strategy Blockstream Mining, which becomes a newly independent company and will continue to operate under the well-established 'Blockstream Mining' brand, has also entered a new phase of growth, with over $350 million raised through a combination of equity and debt financing, alongside investments in its latest Blockstream Mining Note (BMN2).
Former President of Blockstream Mining Chris Cook, who launched and led the division, will serve as CEO of the newly independent company, bringing deep operational expertise and continuity of leadership.
Blockstream Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Adam Back, whose technical leadership and long-term vision were instrumental in shaping the mining business, will continue to support the company in an advisory role. Blockstream Satellite, which has long provided global Bitcoin data broadcast coverage, will also transition under the remit of the new mining entity.
Blockstream is additionally spinning out its ASIC division as a separate company with Assaf Gilboa as CEO (formerly EVP of Blockstream's Hardware Division), which will include a follow-on investment round and second in-progress round with the use of capital focused on ASIC R&D, including foundry services.
Expanding Blockstream's Infrastructure, Layer-2 Development & Institutional Offerings
Key focus areas for Blockstream will continue to include development on Bitcoin layer-2 networks such as Liquid and Lightning, self-custody solutions like Blockstream Green and Jade, including the all-new Jade Plus, and institutional-grade custody tools.
Several new products aimed at creating a more streamlined and integrated user experience across Blockstream's technology stack are set to be unveiled at Bitcoin 2025 - Las Vegas in May.
To meet growing institutional demand, Blockstream launched Blockstream Asset Management (BAM) in February 2025, a new division focused on developing Bitcoin investment products for pensions, endowments, foundations and other sophisticated investors. Led by recently appointed CIO Sean Bill, a thirty-year hedge fund industry veteran, BAM reflects Blockstream's strategy to deliver end-to-end Bitcoin solutions built on Blockstream's full technology stack.
In January, Blockstream Capital Partners also completed a $75 million strategic investment into Komainu, a regulated digital asset custodian backed by Nomura's Laser Digital. The investment supports the integration of Blockstream's Liquid Network, Asset Management Platform (AMP) and enterprise-grade hardware security module (HSM) into Komainu's custody and off-exchange settlement systems, helping to raise the bar for institutional-grade infrastructure within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
A Future Centered on Bitcoin Innovation
Blockstream's long-term commitment to Bitcoin R&D remains at the heart of its vision. In November 2024, the company launched a dedicated research center in Lugano, Switzerland, focused on accelerating product development for the Liquid and Lightning networks and fostering collaboration with startups and academic institutions across Europe.
To further support its global expansion, Blockstream also opened a new office in Tokyo in early 2025, strengthening its presence in Asia and expanding collaboration with partners and developers in the region.
These efforts reinforce Bitcoin's role as a global financial and settlement layer, while supporting the next wave of decentralized innovation.

Bitcoin investor moves $8 billion worth of crypto after 14 years, originally bought for less than $210,000 — 80,000 BTC transferred from dormant Satoshi-era wallet

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. An ancient beast has suddenly risen from its slumber after lying dormant for 14 years. In the realm of crypto, such a beast is known as a whale—an early adopter of the blockchain holding massive amounts of currency. Whales are often closely monitored by the community due to their foresight; therefore, even the slightest activity can be read as a signal based on which the markets can shift. One of these whales, currently speculated to be Roger Ver, has moved 80,000 Bitcoin over the past 24 hours. That's more than $8.6 billion in regular people's money, made from an initial investment of less than $210,000 back in 2011. Doing the math, this mystery whale has achieved a hypothetical return of nearly 4 million percent over its initial purchase, or approximately 40,000 times the original amount. All of these Bitcoins are from the highly revered Satoshi era, the infancy period between 2009 and 2011, when the cryptocurrency was first introduced. Wallets from this time are from true believers of Bitcoin, people who invested in the radical idea of a decentralized financial system when a single coin wasn't even worth $1. So, you can imagine the delight on crypto bros' faces when someone decided to move a record-breaking amount of Bitcoin yesterday. The previous record for the largest single transaction in Bitcoin history was a mere 3,700 BTC, and a whopping 10,000 BTC has now surpassed it, moving at once. There was a total of eight wallets involved in this transaction, each containing the aforementioned 10K Bitcoin, and they're all owned by the same person, according to leading crypto analyst Arkham. The tide started around early Friday, when two wallets that had been inactive for 14 years suddenly transferred 10,000 BTC each to new addresses. These original wallets date back to April 3, 2011, when they initially received a large amount of Bitcoin. At the time, one Bitcoin was worth just 78 cents, so 10,000 BTC would be valued at $7,800. That chalks up to a nearly 14 million percent increase. Eight hours later, six more wallets from the same era—each containing 10,000 BTC—moved their holdings without any prior test transactions. These are from May 4, 2011, when Bitcoin had risen to $3.25. In total, these eight wallets make up 80,000 Bitcoin, the entire stash believed to have been held by the mysterious whale. Bitcoin is currently trading at $108,000, slightly down from its historic high of $110,000, which it had reached shortly before the transfers occurred. Interestingly, during our research, we came across a 2023 Reddit post that discussed six Bitcoin wallets, each holding 10,000 BTC, and speculated on their ownership. The curious OP floated names like the Winklevoss twins and even jokingly suggested this might be "Satoshi's inheritance to his children." These six wallets, dating back to May 4, 2011, are the very same ones involved in the historic transaction, which moved their Bitcoin just hours after the earlier set of wallets from April 2, 2011, made their move. Forget our mystery whale, Reddit user RealVoldermort was the one who saw the storm coming before it ever even brewed. The Mysterious 6 Wallets Holding 10k BTC each from r/CryptoCurrency Of course, no one knows where these Bitcoins went. Was it a sale? Was it inheritance, simply moving from a deceased investor to their heir? Perhaps, it was Roger Ver—one of the earliest investors of Bitcoin, who championed the currency around its creation more than a decade ago. At least, that's what @SaniExp on Twitter claims with "99%" assurance. Constituents around the world have interesting theories as to why such a transaction occurred on a random Friday without any prior indications. Believing that Roger Ver is our leading man, some speculate that he executed the "sale" as part of a potential plea deal with the U.S. government. Ver, currently residing in Spain, is wanted in the United States on tax fraud charges and, earlier this year, appealed to President Trump for a pardon to avoid extradition. Regardless of who is revealed to be the whale swimming in the ocean, it's safe to say that it has shaken the world of crypto and finance as a whole. The new wallets, now containing over $8 billion of Bitcoin, have had no further movements since, and the true identity of our new owner remains unknown. We will update the story with more details if anything valuable surfaces. Follow Tom's Hardware on Google News to get our up-to-date news, analysis, and reviews in your feeds. Bitcoin's 'Mempool' Nearly Empty as Prices Trade Near Lifetime Highs

The Bitcoin blockchain lacks meaningful on-chain activity, even as its native token, bitcoin BTC, trades near a record per-unit price. That's according to mempool – a holding area for unconfirmed blockchain transactions waiting to be included in a block by miners. On Satuday, the mempool had just 5,000 odd transactions awaiting inclusion, with the tally rising to 15,000 at press time, still a far cry from 150,000 when BTC's price first rose above $100,000 in late 2024, according to data source Since March this year, the tally has oscillated between $3,000 and $30,000, indicating anaemic demand for the network despite BTC establishing a foothold above $100,000. "Bitcoin's mempool (queue of transactions waiting to be processed) is almost completely empty. The percentage of miner revenue coming from fees (instead of inflation) is down to a fraction of a percent," Joël Valenzuela, director of marketing and business development, said on X. "Simply put, almost all of Bitcoin's actual users have gone away. At all-time price highs, too!" Valenzuela added, calling the situation a major crisis where the network goes bankrupt or becomes "completely custodial asset run by governments and institutions." According to Joao Wedson, CEO and founder of crypto data analysis platform Alphractal, the idle mempool is a sign of missing retail participation in the market. "When Mempool transactions begin to rise again, it's a clear sign that retail is back — because the growing backlog reflects increased demand for using the network," Wedson said. Robert Kiyosaki: This Is ‘the Easiest Money Ever'

As the writer of 'Rich Dad Poor Dad,' Robert Kiyosaki is known as a financial guru, advocate for alternate investments such as gold and silver, and most recently, Bitcoin. Recently, he declared Bitcoin 'the easiest money ever,' claiming that even buying just 0.01 BTC could be life-changing. Read More: Consider This: Let's break down what Kiyosaki means, why he believes this, and how everyday investors — like you — can respond wisely and take advantage of the opportunity before it passes. In a post on X, Kiyosaki wrote, 'There are only 1 or 2 million Bitcoin left to be mined,' calling this 'the easiest time in history to become rich.' While you might question his conclusion, Kiyosaki has an important point. Scarcity and growing demand create the conditions for rising prices. Bitcoin's price patterns often follow a different rhythm than traditional stocks, sometimes triggering rapid, exponential gains. Kiyosaki isn't known for empty hype — he watches the markets closely. And he's seen a shift that you might want to pay attention to. Discover Next: Given the information Kiyosaki has analyzed from the markets, he sees some significant growth in three key areas: Bitcoin, gold and silver. He predicts Bitcoin will reach nearly $250K by the end of 2025, possibly even $1 million by 2035. As for gold, he believes the price of one ounce of gold will climb to $25K this year, eventually rising to $30K. Silver, he believes, could hit $70 per ounce this year — and rise to $3,000 long-term. With Bitcoin trading at or above $109,000, gold at $3,325 and silver at $33, his projections indicate a substantial upside, particularly in comparison to traditional investments. If you're hesitant, you might miss out on the most profitable investment opportunity of the century. Of the 21 million total Bitcoins that will exist, about 19.7 million have already been mined as of May. The next halving cycle (which reduces new Bitcoin creation and usually boosts prices) doesn't occur until 2028, but if you get your coins now, you can leverage prices rising yet again. With record credit card debt, rising unemployment and declining retirement funds, it's an investment that might be worth the risk, especially as more investors turn to hard assets like Bitcoin, gold and silver for protection against market volatility. If you wait, you'll be a 'yellow banana'–and they never get the profits they're looking for. Kiyosaki's tweet was not a warning, but motivation. If you can't buy dozens of Bitcoins, start small, even with only 0.01 BTC. Use trusted exchanges, and if you invest a larger amount, consider cold storage for added security. Keep in mind, too, that this is volatile. BTC will fluctuate in value, but holding it for the long term should yield returns. This may be a historic window of opportunity. Whether you fully agree with Kiyosaki or remain cautiously optimistic, one thing is clear: doing nothing could mean missing out. Don't be a 'yellow banana.' Educate yourself, think critically and don't miss your chance to prepare yourself and your family for the future.
