This encompasses legislative measures to improve policing and public safety, analyses of crime trends and the SAPS' provincial responses, fostering community-police relations and accountability, and developing oversight mechanisms that support rather than obstruct effective law enforcement.
The meeting was spearheaded by KwaZulu-Natal NCOP whip Mzamo Billy and is part of a larger stakeholder engagement programme. Billy will be accompanied by a provincial delegation.
This initiative aims to strengthen cooperative governance and bring provincial issues to the attention of Parliament.
'The NCOP has a constitutional duty to listen and to act to ensure that national legislation and resources respond directly to the needs of provinces,' said Billy.
Billy highlighted the SAPS as a crucial partner, particularly in a province like KZN, which grapples with significant crime and safety issues.
"The engagement also seeks to build a stronger link between legislative oversight and operational policing realities in the province," said the NCOP.
The SAPS recently released fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2024/2025 financial year (January 2025 to March 2025), which revealed over the three-month period, there were 5 727 murders in the country.
Of the total murders, 1,193 were reported in KwaZulu-Natal.

Call for action after Cape cyclist attacked, killed
Dennis Hammar, who completed over 40 consecutive Cape Town Cycle Tours and was a beloved figure in the cycling community, tragically passed away after he was attacked and robbed while out on a ride. The 76-year-old succumbed to his injuries after he was attacked when cycling from Paarden Eiland on the N1, joining FW de Klerk Boulevard on the Foreshore, with an unidentified male reported to have pushed him off his bike before stealing his cellphone. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but was unable to recover from his injuries, which included multiple fractures. Neil Robinson, the CEO of the Pedal Power Association, raised concerns about ongoing attacks on cyclists, particularly in crime hot spots. 'We are very saddened to hear of another death, it has been ongoing problem and there has been interventions from the SAPS and we are appealing to cyclists to avoid these areas.' A local Cape community group also made a post on social media, highlight how heartbreaking this latest incident was. 'Cape Town, our beloved Mother City, is breaking our hearts again. Just weeks after a hiker's life was shattered on Table Mountain, another tragedy has struck. 'Dennis completed over 40 consecutive Cape Town Cycle Tours, his love for this city shining through every pedal stroke. But that love was not returned. His wife, Sharon, now faces unimaginable grief, left with a painful truth: The city and country he loved so much have let us all down. 'This is what loss looks like: 'A cycling community silenced, their rides now haunted by the absence of a legend. 'A family torn apart, their memories of laughter replaced by endless sorrow. 'A widow, alone in the dawn's quiet, clutching memories of her 'darling husband,' asking why Cape Town turned so heartless. 'Our streets, once alive with runners, cyclists, and walkers, are now shadowed by fear. From Table Mountain to city bridges, spaces of freedom have become sites of violence. 'How many more must suffer before we act? How many more vigils, tributes, or posts before empty promises turn into real change? 'To our leaders: Words of condolence are not enough. We need action, stronger policing, better lighting, and accountability for criminals.' Stay Wider of the Rider group supported a memorial ride for Hammar this past weekend, which was organised by Club100 Cycling Cape Town. 'Dennis was a husband, father and grandfather and we are devastated by this incident which stems from ongoing attacks on cyclist,' the group shared on social media. Councillor Ian McMahon from City of Cape Town addressed the cyclists about safety issues in Woodstock and the CBD during the memorial ride, and a letter with concerns were handed over by Craig Sedras on behalf of the club to the City and the PPA. EMPD and Saps officers to appear in court for corruption and theft
The officers allegedly raided a shop, seized cigarettes and took cash. At least ten members of the South African Police Services (Saps) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police department (EMPD) are expected to make their first court appearance on Tuesday. The officers are expected to appear at the Germiston Magistrate's Court on allegations of corruption and theft. Corruption Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the incident occurred on 4 June 2025. 'It is alleged that during a multi-disciplinary operation by law enforcement initiated by the Premier of Gauteng, the accused officers raided a shop at number 7 Hermila Avenue, Edenvale, where they seized cigarettes and took cash amounting to R35 000 and three packs of Headache tablets (Panados) to the value of about R5 000. ALSO READ: JMPD officers arrested for extortion and corruption 'They arrested the cashier for trading in illicit cigarettes and the other employee for violating immigration rules,' Suping said. Arrest It is also alleged that the accused officers failed to record all the merchandise seized from the shop at the police station. Suping said the shop manager allegedly disputed the quantity and type of merchandise booked in the Occurrence Book to the Station Commander. 'The members were arrested today [Monday] while on duty and will appear before the court tomorrow. All arrested officers are Constables and one Sergeant, and are detained at the Germiston Police Station.' Last month, two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers were arrested on charges of extortion and corruption. The arrests followed a swift probe initiated by a public complaint. JMPD corruption JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they received a distress call on Saturday from a concerned citizen who reported being extorted by officers. Fihla said the operation involved a coordinated effort from the JMPD's Internal Affairs Unit, which effected the arrests. 'The complainant alleged that officers demanded R8 000 after accusing their company driver of fleeing an accident scene. Acting on the provided vehicle registration, JMPD Internal Affairs quickly tracked the vehicle to a BP Garage in Parktown, where three officers were located.' 'A search of the officers and their vehicle uncovered R5,340 from two male officers, much of which could not be accounted for and was suspected to be illicitly obtained. Some of the money was found concealed within the vehicle. The two male officers were immediately detained at Jeppe SAPS on charges of extortion and corruption,' Fihla said. JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca said the arrest of these two officers sends a clear message. ALSO READ: Farm murder accused says he was forced to feed women's bodies to pigs

BLA slams absence of attorneys as evidence leaders at Madlanga commission
The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) says it finds the appointment of advocates and the exclusion of attorneys as evidence leaders in the Madlanga commission of inquiry ' shocking, embarrassing and discriminatory' to the attorneys profession. The association made this comment in a letter to judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga after the judge announced the team of professionals to assist the commission's work last week. 'We note that an all-advocate team has been appointed to the exclusion of attorneys,' Takalani Chris Mamathuntsha, secretary-general of the BLA, said in the letter dated July 29. President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed the commission to investigate criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system last month after explosive allegations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi accused police minister Senzo Mchunu of interfering with police investigations and overstepping his role when he ordered the disbandment of the political killings task team . Mamathuntsha said there was no consultation with the leadership of the BLA on how this team was to be composed, or at least for guidance. 'The attorneys profession has contributed immensely to South Africa's jurisprudence on the bench post our democratic elections.' He said the profession, particularly members of both BLA and the National Association of Democratic Lawyers, had made themselves available for appointment to the judiciary and today were serving in all superior courts. 'We call on (Madlanga) to reconsider his decision of excluding the attorneys profession as it's sending a message to the public that attorneys are inferior to the task.' He said at the centre of the outcry was the missed opportunity of empowerment of attorneys and a pattern that appeared to recycle lucrative briefs among some practitioners. 'We await your urgent replies as mandated by our members.' TimesLIVE
