The man accused of murdering Eddie Lyons and Ross Monaghan in Spain appeared in court on Friday.
Michael Terrence Riley from the Merseyside area, was arrested by local officers last week in connection with the deaths of Eddie Lyons and Ross Monaghan after an international arrest warrant was issued by Spanish cops, the Daily Record.
He is charged with two counts of murder and one of possession of a firearm over the incident which saw Monaghan, 43, and Lyons, 46, killed at Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola.
Riley first appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 19, but the hearing was delayed due to technical issues.
During a brief hearing today, a court date for his next appearance was set.
Riley, who is represented in court by specialist extradition lawyer Renata Pinter, will appear again before the same court next month, on July 18. He was remanded in custody until then.
The full hearing, where Riley will challenge extradition, is scheduled for October 9 this year.
The Lyons crime clan has been locked in a deadly feud with the rival Daniel mob for a quarter of a century, following the theft of drugs from a Glasgow safe house in 2001.
A top Spanish cop told reporters the assassinations of Monaghan and Lyons are part of the feud, claiming that Riley is a member of the Daniel gang.
Speaking at a press conference in Spain, Pedro Agudo Novo said: "The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs.
"In this case we are not talking about an independent hired killer but an internal member of the rival Daniels gang who ends up assassinating two members of an enemy gang."
Scottish police, who have been investigating the war between the rival crime syndicates for decades, seemed to suggest the killing had nothing to do with their rivalry - or the war on the Daniel mob being waged by Lyons associate Ross McGill.
Henchmen of the Dubai-based former Rangers ultra - who headed the Union Bears fan group and is nicknamed 'Miami' - have waged war on the Daniel mob and associates for the last few months.
The feud has seen a number of homes, people and businesses targeted in firebombings, knife attacks and shootings, in Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding areas, and is being investigated by Police Scotland as part of Operation Portaledge.

Toddler found stuffed in zipped-up suitcase by bus driver who noticed 'wriggling'

A 27-year-old woman has been charged with neglect. A toddler was found trapped inside a suitcase which was being carried around by a woman. The woman has now been arrested following the discovery of the tot. ‌ A bus driver made the shocking find after noticing there was wriggling in the luggage. And the 27-year-old suspect has now been charged over the incident. ‌ The Mirror reports the two-year-old was freed from the case in Kaiwaka, New Zealand. The woman was charged with ill-treatment/neglect of a child after officers were called to a bus stop. ‌ The little girl has been taken to hospital where she is undergoing medical assessment, the force said. The incident happened on Sunday, and the woman is due to appear in the North Shore District Court tomorrow. The relationship between the woman and the infant, who have both not been named, has not been disclosed. "The driver became concerned when he noticed the bag moving. When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl," New Zealand Police said a statement. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed. We would like to acknowledge and commend the bus driver, who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action." They said this had prevented "what could have been a far worse outcome." They added that the driver made the discovery after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment. ‌ Last month, a teenage mother locked her two-year-old daughter inside a blistering hot car so she could go and watch the new Smurfs film without interruption. Tripura Merriex, 18, was allegedly frustrated that her child's"loud crying" was "disturbing" a cinema trip with her siblings, so proceeded to leave the little girl trapped in the hot car alone, while she carried on watching the movie. The alleged incident unfolded at the Regal Cinema in Lake City, Utah, on Saturday, where Merriex is said to have left her vulnerable tot in her 2002 Cadillac Escalade. ‌ The 18-year-old parent has been charged with felony child neglect, according to US police reports. As temperatures skyrocketed to 40C, concerned witnesses called 911 to report Merriex and police were forced to bust a window to rescue the "distressed" child. In the arrest report, an officer said: "I applied a window break to the driver side window after observing the child in the front passenger seat." The toddler was "visibly distressed" when she was found trapped inside the vehicle, Law & Crime reports. ‌ Police allege that the two-year-old had "a flushed red appearance, was sweating profusely and was crying in distress". It is believed that the little girl was stuck inside the sweltering hot car for at least 30 minutes. When her mum eventually came out of the cinema, she was "very nonchalant", the police report claimed. Merriex claimed she "accidentally" locked her tot inside and "acted as though the whole situation wasn't a big deal as she just stood next to her vehicle". The young mum said she initially brought her little girl out to the cinema lobby to keep her from "disrupting other movie viewers' experience," the report continued. After doing this "a few times", she allegedly ended up leaving her daughter alone in the car. She left the Smurfs film occasionally to go out and check on her daughter, police claim, and even allegedly tasked her siblings with taking it in turns to check on her. Merriex is reportedly being held at the Columbia County Jail on $50,000 (£36,9600) bond. Police Chief Gerald Butler said: "Our officers acted swiftly to ensure the safety of this young child. Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle under these conditions is unacceptable. We are thankful the child is safe and urge all parents to prioritize the well-being of their children at all times."

Police ‘harassed' pensioner over Gaza protest T-shirt

Officers have been accused of political policing, harassment and intimidation of a 78-year-old protester charged under terrorism legislation for allegedly wearing a T-shirt in support of the banned group Palestine Action. Mick Napier, co-founder of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, was arrested at a protest in Edinburgh on July 19 and spent a night in the cells before being released on bail on standard conditions. He said that during President Trump's trip to Scotland last month, officers had visited his home seven times, claiming they were there to remind him of his bail conditions. Napier's lawyer, Mark Harrower, has lodged a complaint with Police Scotland, claiming the actions were 'nothing short of harassment'. In it, he wrote that his client was a 'peaceful protester against the killing and starvation of innocent civilians in Gaza' who had been released on bail on July 22. Speaking to the Sunday Mail, he said: 'Since then, he has received seven separate visits from police officers at his home address to check whether he is aware of his bail conditions.' • Record number of arrests at Palestine Action protests across UK Harrower said that after the fourth visit, he had contacted the force to say Napier wanted the visits to stop. Yet they continued. The lawyer wrote: 'The only possible explanation for these repeated visits is to intimidate my client and his wife. 'Not only is this a huge waste of police resources, this behaviour makes Scotland look like it is turning into a police state. It is nothing short of harassment.' Harrower said that similar visits had been made to the homes of other protesters, raising concerns that police were becoming 'politically involved'. He said: 'It was clearly designed to intimidate them into not participating in any protests when Trump was in the country because it would've been embarrassing. 'It's really concerning. It curtails people's right to protest and freedom of speech and shouldn't be happening.' Palestine Action became a proscribed terrorist organisation last month after two Voyager military aircraft were vandalised at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20. Membership of, or support for, the group became a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Police Scotland said: 'We carry out appropriate checks as required in line with conditions imposed by the courts.'

Man Utd transfer suddenly collapsed after negotiations descended into farce

A bizarre sequence of events saw Manchester United miss out on one sought-after transfer target after 'impostors' attempted to hijack the deal with farcical demands The Ander Herrera transfer saga of 2013 was a unique situation that saw Manchester United miss their target for the strangest of reasons. The Red Devils were known to be in pursuit of the former Spain midfielder when three agents sought to hijack the transfer. ‌ David Moyes, who was United manager at the time, said the deal collapsed due to Athletic Bilbao 's extortionate demands over the fee. However, fans could hardly believe their eyes when reports emerged suggesting the move was actually off because 'impostors' claiming to act on United's behalf had arrived at Athletic's offices offering to pay his buyout clause on deadline day. ‌ The details were like something out of a Hollywood script rather than transfer negotiations. So many will have been even more shocked to hear Herrera himself confirm that truly was the reason his move to Old Trafford never materialised 12 years ago. ‌ "I didn't even know them," the 35-year-old said on the UTD Podcast in 2022. "I know my lawyers and I know my agent. It is the same agent as when I was 18. They [hoaxers] were trying to make easy money – I don't know how. "I think they wanted to be there if the negotiation was successful, they wanted everyone to think that they were the ones who did it and, maybe after that, they can have more players or more negotiations. "But I didn't even know them, honestly. It was funny because some of my friends say, 'Your lawyers are in La Liga and they are going to pay the money,' and I said, 'No, they are not my lawyers. I do not know them.'" La Liga sources appeared eager to downplay the 'impostor' aspect of the storyline at the time, insisting the three lawyers, Rodrigo Garcia Lucas, Alvaro Reig Gurrea and Guillermo Gutierrez, were indeed working for United. Moyes added more intrigue when the Scot admitted that the collapse was due to the club feeling "the buyout was the wrong valuation." After missing out on Herrera, United instead rushed through a £27.5m deadline-day deal for Marouane Fellaini from Everton. ‌ The Herrera debacle went down as one of the more obscure transfer failures witnessed in modern times as United endured a slow summer of business under Moyes. There was a sentiment United were under-prepared in navigating the complexities of Spanish football's transfer system at such a late juncture in the window. Lucas, Gurrea and Gutierrez were the same three lawyers responsible for orchestrating Javi Martinez's blockbuster move to Bayern Munich in 2012. However, while that deal had been drawn up over the course of a month, they were attempting to execute Herrera's 2013 transfer in a matter of days (at most). ‌ Herrera, now playing for Argentinian giants Boca Juniors, moved to Manchester the following year after Louis van Gaal replaced Moyes at the helm. And United facilitated the move by transferring funds so the midfielder could trigger his own buyout clause. The Basque icon made 189 appearances for United, the same number of outings he managed for Athletic across two separate stints. He won the Europa League, an FA Cup and one League Cup during his time in England before joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2019.
